So, I've been looking into joining a corporation as it does seem the most enjoyable way to play eve, however there seems to be a mandatory requirement in most of the corporations I'd be looking to join: (small scale pvp and nullsec) voice comms. The problem with this is that I'm only sixteen. I can understand why everyone uses voice comms as it would definitely make time sensitive communication (fleet coordination) far easer however I'm not sure that would me advisable for someone of my age group. So what I'm wondering is:
What the odds would be of me finding a corporation that doesn't require voice comms and how practical it would actually be to coordinate using text chat. If I were to join a corporation and use voice comms, what is the general opinion among the community of people my age in eve? Thanks for the help.
(PS: I'm not actually sure if I'm allowed to disclose my age, I read the EULA and website terms of service and didn't see anything saying I couldn't but I might have missed something, if I am not could a moderator contact me and I will edit my post.) |

I think some corps have a lower limit 18y because they don't want exclude adult content. But in general it's more like that it is expected you behave like an adult ... then you will be fine (everywhere). Voice comms is more or less required for PvP, at least listening. Elsewhere text chat should be OK, but I see no problem, I "know" a couple of teenagers from fleet comms.

CCP has been reaching out to younger players in more recent years but when I first started playing this game I was 37 and one of the younger players that I played with. Eve definitely has an older average player age than most MMOs.
That does not mean that you can not find a corp at your age it just means you might have to spend a little more time looking. As Tipa said while voice comms may be required for PvP speaking on them is not. As a matter of fact during most fleet ops unless you are the FC or scout or other wise required to speak it is typically discouraged that you speak. You want to keep comms clear for important information only.
I have not used voice comms much playing this game but have heard from people that claim that they have been in voice comms for years without saying anything and in some cases not even having a microphone. They use fleet chat to text back any info.
From my experience there seems to be a huge change in a person once they leave their parents house and get out on their own. Once I got into the working world I was amazed at how there did not seem to be much difference in the way a 19 year old and a 62 year old interacted with each other in the workplace. 16 is at that weird age where you are not a kid and you are not an adult yet, there are exceptions to this but in general in western culture I find this to be typically true.
For me the main issue in dealing with teenagers still living with their parents is that they have not yet learned to take care of themselves and how to find their place in a group. Meaning typically they are still used to parents providing everything and have yet to learned the subtle ways in which adults figure out who is going to do what to make group efforts happen without a lot of discussion and asking going on.
The reason that I went to lengths to describe this is because if you can think more along the lines of "what do I bring to this situation" rather than "what can I get from this situation" then you will be thinking more like an adult and less like a child and especially in a online game where no one sees you, you can be treated like an adult if you act like one.
I guess if I were to sum up the difference between the adult mindset and the child mindset it would be responsibility which really is just understanding that there are consequences to your actions. Eve is very much a game about having to make hard choices and dealing with the consequences so in that respect is much more of an adult game than other MMOs with respawn mechanics that eliminate most if not all consequences.
But again adult is more of a mindset than an age thing. I've seen men in their 50s behave like children. Don't get me wrong adults do stupid things and goof off and have fun all the time. The difference is an adult understand and accepts the consequences that come with that. The child mindset pitches a fit and complains about it and expects others to "clean up their mess".
So go find a corp that works for you. It might take you a few tries but you will find one. And keep in mind that the mechanics of this game make it more of an adult game then a teenager game but that only means you'll have to look a little harder and not that you will be totally locked out.
Welcome to Eve and have fun. |

So a few things;
- don't worry about age TOO much. I have had corpmates that were in the mid to late teens. Some were barely tolerable. Others I still talk with. "Fitting in" depends on your attitude more than anything else.
- You WILL be made fun of. Especially if you voice cracks a little bit. Sorry... but it is the truth. My advice? Take it in stride and poke fun at how old everyone else is when the opportunity presents itself (read my in-game profile for more details).
- You can explain to the corporation you are applying to that you do not feel comfortable talking on comms... but you will log in and listen. Understand that if you choose not to speak on comms you will in a position where you cannot perform certain roles (scout, intel gatherer, bait, etc), people may not see your cries for help when it matters most (you are pinned and no one is paying attention to the chat boxes), or you may be ignored (because people are not paying attention to the chat boxes).
All that said... I have also flown with people who never uttered a peep in audio chat. And yes... they got made fun of as well.
- Profanity and mild perviness (mostly in jest) is normal here (remember, older crowd!). If you are concerned about your guardians hearing someone on comms talking about how they got their junk caught someplace it should not have been... or the latest "sheep story" out of Wales or New Zealand... you might want to invest in a headset.

Yeah i think once you can take and give a good natured slagging without getting pissy or too personal with it you would be grand.
No one will give a **** how old you are if you are chilled out and can have a bit of craic. We had a couple of teens in the past and they were fine (most of us are grown ass family men). The sooner you just get out there the less of a concern it will be in the longrun.
Some basic tips on fitting in: Definitly get a head set, set comms "push to talk" ( no one wants to hear you fart ,cough or chew)
Poke fun only if you can laugh at yourself.
Dont watch p0rn while coms are up (you may laugh but we have had to tell off grown ass men for this)
Some will want to share personal day to day small talk , others will hate it , dont look too much into this its just how some people are.
My experiance pvp groups are easier to chill with than carebears, pvp breeds interdependance, you generate oppertunities to bond every time you fight with your corp, You can become a hero for a group in a fight, its harder with out the conflict imo.

Youngest player I've come across in voice comms was 13. Just don't tell anyone if you're really that bothered.
If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

Nobody gives a flying crap about your horrible teenage voice.
Age requirements are to avoid grown adults having to interact with annoying, incompetent children.
If you're not annoying and incompetent then there's not a problem.
Refusing to use voice comms absolutely is going to a problem for a lot of corps. |

What's age got to do with anything?
The only requirement of voice comms / chat / forums is not getting personally offended by the lack of maturity exhibited by some "adults".
I seem to remember an FC in a major alliance that was a teenager. He was a good FC too. |

For what it's worth, being old and being mature aren't related. 34 here, was looking after a friend's 7 year old yesterday and the kid was definitely the more mature one.
EVE is often quiet, and most of the age requirements are there so that people can feel free to talk about - uh - filthy stuff - without offending teenage ears. If that sort of conversation doesn't bother you then just go ahead and apply.
I highly recommend setting comms up though. EVE is a lot more fun when you are talking crap during the quiet times.

Using third-party comms (and forums) means they get your IP address for counter-intel use. Or, if a spai can read this intel, DDoSing isn't unheard of.

Age doesn't matter much, unless they specifically write it in their corp description. Most people will say "oh, you're 13, thats kinda cool" and leave it at that.
Voice coms doesn't matter much either, especially since you're new. All you need is to be able to listen, and that's about it. |

Voice comms are pretty much a requirement. Being 18 isn't. Unless the corporation has an age requirement (and you can always contact them about that even if you're under) you should put in your application. If they ask for an age be honest.
Also, you can always join Horde. Great if you're new, and we operate in nullsec and have loads of PvP.
I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

As long as you don't act like a hormonal raging teenager you shouldn't encounter many issues
At one point we had a 22 year old join the corp, 5 years later we learned he was 15 when he joined. No one had ever actually asked him about his age, we had just assumed and he chose to never correct us
But he was just as mature (if not more) then any other member of the corp.

I wouldnt worry about your age to much.
1. Join a null sec 2. Rip out all your keys except ESC and F1 3. When in coms just dont lol to much at the FC having a emmo. 4. Avoid most links posted due to your mom having your web traffic watched. Mostly your Dad wont care as he can check all the porn links later. 5. HAVE FUN AND WELCOME TO EVE!!!!
PS check out alliance recruitment forums and you'll find the right corp
