One thing I noticed was that new players (like myself) take some time to understand how aligning works. The UI is not ultimately helpful, because when you warp to something, the following happens:
step 1 - you align to target (change direction, build up speed) - the speed meter shows "warping"
step 2 - you start actually warping - speed meter resets to zero and then to max - the speed meter still shows "warping"
I propose that the speed meters display the word "aligning" instead of "warping" during step 1. This would make it far easier for new players to realize that the first part of warping is actually aligning. T
So the change is trivial, just a word change. But hopefully it will decrease the infamous learning curve a little bit.

The UI should tell you what it is doing with white letter like "Aligning - there" and accelerating. If it doesn't, it's not supposed to not show.

EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.
Hello, Mr Carebear. Would you like some cheese with that whine?

The suggestion is a good one.
It changes nothing tactical, simply provides more accurate information. As he said, it's mostly a newbie issue- you can stop the ship and do other things at any time until actually in warp, and the UI should reflect that change of state. I know how it works, most everyone else does too, but anything that smooths the learning curve is a good change. |

That is a good point and in my opinion, calling it "Aligning" in the align phase could cause confusion as to what the ship is actually doing.
Instead, what about dynamic text in the in-space text: During the align phase of the warp process, the second line in this UI element could say "Aligning to: Rasile" and when the warp actually starts "Warping to: Rasile".

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

Except it doesn't lock you out from being warp scrambled, which is a pretty big deal. But if my ship is warping, as the UI tells me, how can I be warp scrambled? Obviously the UI is lying and this needs to be fixed. To prevent infererence with the "align" function that you pointed out, the text under the capacitor could say "Entering warp" - since neither "aligning" nor "warping" is accurate.
Workarounds are not bugfixes.

That is a good point and in my opinion, calling it "Aligning" in the align phase could cause confusion as to what the ship is actually doing. As Luscius Uta points out, you are not actually warping as you can still be pointed, shot, (maybe even bumped? I'm too new to be sure). IMHO what the ship is doing at this stage is really just aligning.
There are a number of ways to make it more clear to the new player what is happening, this suggestion also works:
However, as a fairly new player myself I remember that I was looking at the speed meter in confusion. Why does your speed first slowly increase and then drop and then jump? So IMHO the speed meter is the better place to place this information.
As for
Lugh Crow-Slave wrote:i would like to know if i hit align or if i hit warp -1 Once you initiate warp, then you will hear a sound clip "Warp drive initiated" and you will see white text saying that you are warping. My suggestion is not to change any of this. The suggestion is to only show 'aligning' in the speed meter if you are in the process of going to warp. So it is not displayed if you hit align. That way it should not confuse the existing players.

Or do you just not understand that the suggestion has nothing to do with the alignment button?
No one is confusing hitting the align button with the warp button. What is being asked for is an unambiguous indicator of the actual state of the ship after the warp button has been hit.
To go further, it could be useful if there was an indicator when something is preventing your ship from aligning as well, such as during a bump or when stuck on an object. Again, while not confusing to an experienced player, a new player can benefit from clear and accurate information at every step of the process. |
