Are these rats as bad as they r in 0.0 space.? Don't mean to ask crazy questions, but don't want to get whacked out of the gate w/ Castor. Just curious on how the rats are in .9 - .5 space. Please forgive the noob type question. Just want to be safe and know what is going on.
Thanks for all the info. it will help me stay alive another day or so.

Ive yet to play post-castor so I can't tell you, but they do seem to be a little tougher by all accounts. Im going to kick some rat ass tonight to find out myself.
I don't think I'll be going after the BS rats just yet though -------------------------------------------- Dead

The Rats can sometimes be a little uber for new Players now, especially if that happens what I found today. I was really surprised to find a 30k rat and 2 5k rats at a Jumpgate in 0.8 sec Space. But since someone was allready fighting them it could be that they where there because of an Agentmission. I was dropped directly in between the 3 Rats and the Player who was engaging them. Luckily I was flying my Thorax, but I guess it would have ment death for any newbie Player cause of all those missles the rats where firing.

ccp probably improved the neural network on enemy AI. i noticed that the game system will actualli learn wat ur latest moves.
eg i did a long mining run, noticed the increased frequency of npc pirates. Some of them were scouting pirates, yet a couple of decoys of the lousiest npc pirates, only to accompanied by another npc pirate whom could do 10 times more the their damage, slipping in behind fast...usually at 20km, and it destroyed a hammer combat drone real quick...
i thot it was simple, ya noe, since the drones could easily take out the lousiest of the npc pirates. But no way since it was 20km, meaning i would need a couple of seconds to scoop the drones and turn to warp but that clever npc pirate was already pounding on my mining ship in just a couple of seconds...
thot it might be better actually to flee instead and return re-deploy at 50km(so as to give ur combat drones some time to reorganise themselves)
the neutral network was betting that i was gonna deploy combat drones at first thought... a neat trap i would say!
jus 2 cents worth ya...

the NPC rats are uber guys.
I was hunting PC pirates in a 0.0sec system last night, went looking for them in belts, (as thats where they sometimes hide) and got owned, by 10 NPCs .

I was running back and forth between 2 system today both 0.7 . system side by side. was in indy. lightly armed. and there were 1 time 2 mercenary fighter rats. npc's not players. they were sitting next to gate throwing missils out. was a person in omen trading blows with them. concorde of course just sat waiting for someone to hit gate . I almost lost my ship as they decided to open up on me. when I got close.
was partailly my fault. I was try to figure out who the omen was fighting. by time me brain clicked these are new npc gate rats. I was taken damage fast, luckly I was able to jump bnefore was destroyed and switched ships at destination station after some costly repairs
moral: there be gate camping npc mercenary fighter rats. and dey be bad assed. so watch your 6.

I find rats in 0.5 - 0.9 still not strong enough. Only inoffensive little frigates in these systems

those high value mercenary pirates by gates in higher sec systems are target pirates for someone's mission. One of the new mission types is something like "Go check all the jumpgates in this system for pirates and kill them."

I hunted in 0.4, nothing much to worry about. But i went to a 0.0 to see.... I was push out of the belt by 1x250k, 4x85k, 4x35k and 8x10k... Damnit. And it was not very deep into 0.0...

It looks like the better stuff you get the stronger the pirates are. My newbie corp spent 1M5 (all our cash) to purchase the hammerhead BP. Now in 0.6 with hammerheads we get 2 Serpentis Sentinels and 4 drug couriers each time, we lost 2 frigates and 1 miner laser 2 since we have hammerheads...
I am afraid to buy a Thorax now, I guess stronger pirats will come and destroy it very fast.
It looks like you can equip and get all the stuff you want those pirats will still destroy your ships, which is very disappointing. And no, skills don't help as we are newbies.

The rats in my corps hq system have certainly been beefed up. We are in a .7 system in the forge and get 8.5k rats firing missiles in some belts.
Our newbs have to be escorted to mine and indy ships have probs collecting ore.
We have lost a few merlins and an osprey due to inexperience and a roid stopping warp.

you need to reconsider that n00bs should also have a change against such pirates,.. the ones in 0.5 could be somewhat better

Yup i'm in 0.9 space and the kill missions require you to kill 3 x depredators (30k) and a ruffian (6k) near to a jumpgate , so watch out for that splash damage

we get 45k cruisers that pop up in our 0.2 system on occasion ( like 1 in 8 spawns ) out in belts. in a battleship its still not hard, let the pirates peg your ship and a couple wasps can take out everything else as long as the pirates focus on you.
nice to see some variation tho, i hear CCP has realized how insanely difficult the new pirates are and are working to correct it SoonÖ
