I really love the idea of the carrier, but the more I read about it, the more I realize that it's more of a ship for very special purposes and rarely owned/used by a single individual.
So, I don't want to spend the better part of a year training for something that I'll never be able to use. Are carrier pilots in demand or are there more carrier pilots than carriers to fly? If so, maybe I'll go the Command Ship route instead (although I really don't like it as much), since I know people fly Command Ships all the time.

A carrier pilot is welcome in a corp because he can add considerable firepower to any gang. It is a half-year long commitment, and someone who can stick to a plan for a long time, is someone you want to be on your team.

As a capital ship they are limited to low sec (0.4 and below) so keep that in mind. You also need someone (or an ALT logged in simultaneously) to move you around via a Cynosural field which costs money to generate.
With these limiting factors in mind they are still very popular. Their drones (fighters) are quite powerful. CCP banned them from missions since they were too good in there but with L5 and above missions coming they likely will be allowed in there.
So, expensive ship, expensive fittings, expensive fighters, expensive skill training. If you are up for it then why not?

Either way, it is good that you realize it is *not* a pwnmobile and are carefully considering before starting along that path. You will be a corp asset, but you will not be a roving gank machine, if you are caught solo somewhere you will likely lose your billions in ship/fittings, everyone comes running to kill capital ships, and carriers are particularly easy to lock down.
