Hey!
Im about 2 days away from my retreiver and I want to get into manufacturing!
I want to make ships, but then I got thinking, if i make 15 frigs how do i get them where i need them to be? Do i have to sell them in the station where they are made?
What modules should I start making? is there a "bread and butter" type set of items to make?
Are there any online guides?
I have a feeling industrialists wont want to share their secrets thats ok... just gimme hints and i'll figure out the rest!

I'm no expert on production, but you're gonna need a hauler. Do some research into what items are best to produce, buy a BPO and research it. Probably best to build something that doesn't require high end minerals such as megacyte or zydrine, then you can easily mine the minerals yourself. Once built find a region with the highest demand and sell your wares there. ______________

ok,
ive had a look throught these forums and used the awful search facility
It looks to me like manufacture is an Elite profession?
It could be a dastardly trick by indutrialists to reduce competion but what I read is that:
- The profit margins are small for T1 production - The skills needed (research & science) are time intensive - The only other way to reduce materials bill is research and... - Long wait times for research slots
Im all for hard stuff, im a minmatar after all. But this seems almost sado-machocistic.

Then again, once you got the skills and the researched BPs, it's pure profit (for some items ) =AFK=

Profit margins on certain items are non-existant, mostly on ships. On some items the margin is fairly decent, but the volume isn't great. Since I've moved on from that I'll tell you what I made my initial money on. Antimatter charges (small) sell in incredible volume all over Caldari and Gallente space, and you don't have to compete on price across the region as people won't go more than maybe one hop for ammo. Most won't even go from one station to another. So pick a system, and monitor prices there like a mother hen and you'll make money. If people undercut you you can either buy them out or undercut them. Hobgoblin drones are another high-volume item, but the competition is so fierce that you can frequently find them selling for below cost.
As far as the whole research thing goes, there's no rule you have to research your own BP's. I'd venture a guess that most industrialist corps have the means to research for you.
The biggest hurdle to being a profitable producer is "Production Efficiency". If you want to build anything bigger than a drone, then your wastage is going to kill your profit margins unless you run your PE to 5.
But really the biggest thing you're going to need, especially for that Retriever is a HAULER. A barge can't be shuffling back and forth to the station every time the hold is full because it's full after one cycle (3 minutes). That means jet-canning, which means a hauler. You're lucky because Minmatar has the best hauler for people who aren't going to run that skill to 5 (the Mammoth). Properly outfitted a Mammoth can pull a full jet-can in one trip. That is something you can only appreciate if you've had to empty one with an Iteron I (7 trips).
Being an Industrialist isn't that hard, and you can make good money at it, but you don't make billions per day until you get really big and are handling dozens of orders.
On the flip side, the chances of you losing a multi-million dollar ship while building and selling things is fairly slim, unlike a PVP'er or a mission runner. (Note I excluded mining, that can be fairly interesting if you get a double cruiser rat spawn)
