The Last Thing You'll Ever See

I've recently accepted a job over most of the summer in a little place about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Thing is, i'm English and although i've been to the US many times before, i've only been to the slightly toastier CA, TN, AR and FL.
I'll be there between 18th Jun - 25th Aug, and i'm hoping someone who does live there can tell me what the weather is like between those dates. The guy I talked to from the agency was being extremely evasive when I asked about this, so i'm worried that I can expect a 24/7 drought with flashfloods, tornados and snowstorms...
And once i'm done there I have 3 weeks to myself before I have to fly back. What is there to do in Philadelphia, or should I just spend half of it in New York?
Thanks for any info! ---

Well.. It will be around 40 degrees when your here. Sunny so bring sun block and enjoy the summer. Philly is a nice city, lots of museums/galleries, small indie venus for gigs... just don't go into a bar and talk to anyone about "football" cause they might hit you... its not that bad. Women will drool over your accent although the drinking culture in the States is slightly more standoffish than the UK. Stick to nice bars instead of going for that "real locals" feel. Have fun and a train to New York from Philly isnt that expensive. -----------

I thought this topic was going to involve Middle Eastern politics when I saw PA and "state" on the same line.
Never been to Philadelphia, here that there are a lot of conventions there though. ___________________

Philly is awesome. I lived there for a long time. 50mi NW of philly is pretty much the country side. Downtown Philly has a great bar district. Acutally a couple. South street is very indi while Oldtown is more yuppy.
As far as football, they'll know what your talking about the closer your are to the city. Most certainly if you talk about rugby. Philly is one of the most dense regions in the US with a huge pile of teams. All the Uni's have em, and there's a dozen or so men's clubs.
As someone else said NYC is a short train ride (1.5 hours). In fact I used to live in philly and work in NYC.

K thanks, this all sounds promising so far. I'm more likely to talk about guitars than football, and I don't drink so that won't be a problem. Mostly I just want to check that it isn't going to snow and that i'm not going to be arrested for loudly disagreeing with some political opinions. ---

Edited by: Orion Eridanus on 11/03/2007 02:37:25 It does snow occasionally in Philly and the surrounding areas but during the dates your going to be there it wont be an issue. It will be hot and humid though, just like the other places you visited, and it wont likely rain much either. The food is great(cheese steaks, tastykakes). Philly is known for its sports fans, they'll insult their own team just as much as they will the opposing team so it makes for an entertaining game if the team you want to win is losing. I cant tell you too much about Philly it self (like places to go , etc) since I haven't gone down to the city with the exception of going to a hockey game, in years. The mass transit system IMO while not as good as the one in Washington DC, isn't bad either. WANTED: Someone to go to Jita with me. This is not a joke. Eve mail me PO BOX *snip* Ashela, Genesis. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring own ship. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done t |

50 Miles NW of Philly, eh? I live about 30 miles NE of the city. Most of what has been said covers things pretty well. About the only things I can add are that the roads are somewhat rough, and there is usually construction/maintenance going on on them. Gasoline prices are about 2.6 US Dollars a gallon at present, with it expecting to go a bit higher during the months you may be here.
Weather tends to be hot during those months, but it can vary. Sometimes you get very hot conditions, while others you get very mild temperatures. I'd probably make sure the place you are staying has Air Conditioning, as well as any vehicle you may be driving, just in case.
Anytime it is hot, you can expect thunderstorms, though it's difficult to predict how much. While we've had droughts in the past, the last few years haven't been severe. Tornados are rare but we do get them occasionally. We don't get snowstorms until about November, however, so you don't have to worry about that.
Generally, I don't think you'll find much difference between PA and CA during those months (though CA is a large state that crosses alot of weather conditions).

I live about an hour west of Philly. If you've got to be in PA, Philly is the area to be in.
If I may make a recommendation, check out Delilah's while your in the city. One of the best places to get a drink and have a good time IMHO.

You missed the St. Pattys day parade in Scranton.
And the weather in the summer. Expect anything from 60 to 95 with humidity ranging from nice to crushing. In June and July it isn't too bad. But in August it gets really humid and really hot, then it just sucks.
This might help as well.
