I've heard it said that the best way to set up mids and lows in a myrmidon is with a passive shield tank. First of all, is this true? Seems a bit weird considering the huge bonus to armor reppers.
Second of all, if it is true, how is it done? My knowledge of shield tanking is roughly non-existant, and skillwise I have Shield Op II and Shield Upgrades II, and that's it :) However I like drone boats, and if shield tanking is the best way to fly one, I'm willing to put in some training time.
Thanks.

Best way - is very subjective, youre ignoring one of the best tanking bonuses in game. And youre dropping all midslots thus voiding all ew, propulsion, injectors etc.
And usually shield tankers can fit damage mods in lows, this is pretty void for a drone boat. You can however put mag stabs or gyrostabs for your blasters or ac's, if thats your path.
How to do it, well, read one of the numerous passive shield tanking threads here on the forum.

I haven't tried it myself, perhaps because I have three armor rep amount rigs on my myrmidon You need better skills, though. Shield Management IV and Shield Op IV (or V) is a must for passive tanking.

We did it four times now we all have nice shiney Large Extender IIs on our PvP Drakes.
It has armor tanking bonuses so armor tank it. You get crappy resists by shield tanking the poor thing.

Thanks, it's what I thought. And now I wont have to train pesky shield tanking skills

Edited by: Sphynx Stormlord on 10/03/2007 23:33:47 The myrmidon can be used to make a very good passive shield tank.
If as a normal gallente, you mostly armour, tank, I would recomend a passivly shield tanked myrmidon as a good tool for fighting against Angels (with their liking for explosive damage).
A passive shield tank is strong on a battlecruiser, because they get to use large shield extenders (which are supposed to be battleship sised modules), and battlecruisers have a much better base shield recharge time than battlelships, with similar hp values.
One can use all the mid and low slots on ones tank, when passivly shield tanking, and all three rigs. This can result in very good hp recovery rates, even for relativly poorly skilled characters.
Mid slots should be a mix of Large Shield Extenders (the tech 2 ones are nice, but the good named ones might do for some mission running), resistance mods (eg having one invun field isnt a bad thing), and possibly shield rechargers. Low slots should be shield power relays - note that this will kill your cap regen, so be careful not to use many active modules. Rigs - there is a nice rig that gives shield recharge, which is very good for such a ship.
High slots are harder; weapons that dont use cap are a good idea (ie projectile weapons), possibly a nos if you are trying to run any active modues (such as active resistance mods). Maybe some drone mods, or a tractor/salvager combo if you are so inclined. Drones fortunatly dont use any cap, and will be your main source of damage.
With poor skills, one can realtivly easily get a 200 hp/sec regen; better skills can get this over 300hp/sec.
It is a good choice if you have a poor connection; your ships shield hp regen automatically, even if you have crashed, or become disconected.
Have fun with it; myrmidons are not just for armour tanking.

I have to say that having poor shield tanking skills is not smart even if you're an armor tanker. Having Shield Op 4 and Shield Management 4 helps no matter what... they can make a sizable difference for armor tankers, giving you several more seconds to withstand attack.
A passive myrm is doable for level 3 missions... wouldn't dream of it for real combat though.

This gave me a laugh. PvP Drake? Oxymoron IMO...
Anyhow, yes for PvE you can get more recharge/sec at the break point with similar resists if you passive tank a Myr. however to do this you need to take advantage of the massive number of lowslots a Myr has and fill em with Shield Power Relay IIs which go for 20-40mil a pop. So say you go 3 Shield power relays and 3 Power Diagnostics (to give you can to run your shield hardners), that's about 70-80mil just in your lowslots. Now add in 2 Large Extender IIs at 15mil and some Tech2 or named shield harners. You can setup your hislots different ways but I'd think the best would be to use projectiles if you wanna go turrets because you have barely any cap recharge to run your hardeners to begin. Other suggestions are Tractor beams and Drone Link Augmentors. Maybe some nos to refill your cap every now and then.
IMO you shouldn't try to PvP with a shield tanked Myr. Pottsey has some *****pot setup but it really depends on rigs, warfare links, and a solidly led gang to back you up. You could do it for kicks but IMO an armor tanked Myr is far superior for PvP.

A full passive (or better said "capless mids/lows") shield-tanked Myrmidon can work wonders in a small fleet (either projectile or much rather a NOS+neut setup), and if the fleet can "support" you with the needed/lacking tackler gear, you're home free.
Of course, it works perfectly in PvE too, where you don't need tackling gear to begin with. Purely from a tanking perspective, you can soak up MUCH MORE damage with a T2-only passive shield tank and the required skills/implants as you could ever hope to acheive with an active armor tank, even with a faction armortank !
That aside, solo-PvP, shield-tanked Myrmidon is kind of a bad idea, the mini-NOS-domi armortank setup works much better for the (hopefully) obvious reasons. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

There is no warfare link that boosts shield recharge rate or max shields (though there is one boosting shield resistances...). The siege warfare skill gives 2% extra shield per level as a gang bonus thus affecting passive tanking.
On another note I would suggest passive tanking for PVE ratting. With decent skills you get a shield recharge rate that no rat is ever going to break ans since you don't use cap for anything besides shield hardeners you can put your highs full of your choice of looting/salvaging gear or a set of minmatar weapons (easy on cap) to increase DPS. As with all shield tank ships it will be hard to fit good tackling so in PVP you probably want to armor tank...

The siege warfare skill gives 2% extra shield per level as a gang bonus thus affecting passive tanking.ö I think the confusion comes form the mindlink implant that pretty much all warfare link pilots have. Mindlink boosts warfare links by 50% along with giving a 5% shield hitpoint bonus. But only when in a gang. (15% bonus but doesnÆt stack with siege warfare skill).
On a Gallente ship with mindlink you get 22.5% to all resistance from the right warfair link.
ôOriginally by: Janus Duo You can setup your hislots different ways but I'd think the best would be to use projectiles if you wanna go turrets because you have barely any cap recharge to run your hardeners to begin.ö I have been recently experimenting with turrets and found with 3 PDS I could run a full layout of 250mmm railguns without much problem with lead ammo. I did have to watch cap giving enough time it would run out but it lasted with all but the longest missions. Surprising swapping to antimatter ammo and adding a 4 PDS was enough to run none stop even with a siege warfare link. Take off the siege warfare link and you might not need the extra PDS. Lvl 4 Rapid fire and lvl 4 what ever its called that lowers gun cap usage.
Edit: Then again there is little reason not to use projectiles as the ship has no bonus to railguns or blasters.
öOriginally by: Shadarle A passive myrm is doable for level 3 missions... wouldn't dream of it for real combat though.ö What do you mean for real combat? Its great for real combat and still beats an amour tnak setup. Even works well for PvP.

i run on my passive mrym:
6 dual 180mm AC 5 LSE II 6 SPR
em shield rig, shield capacity rig, shield recharge rig.
you are pretty damn tough to take down, and with 5 ogre IIs you do allot of DPS on targets, the guns are there to mainly shoot small stuff

Details of my passive shield tanked Myrmidon can be found here. It's pricey, but I swear by it currently for PvE (running level 4 missions with no problems with it... it tanks better than the normal raven mission running setups).

It's very fun to fly and tanks like a monkey to the point that the enemy will stop paying any attention to you till the very end. With t1 shield recharge rigs it had a recharge time of 93sec for 16500 shields. It has a major weakness as EM res was at 0%! I found a solution (expensive one) 2 t2 shield recharging rigs and a em shield hardener rig.
As for DPS 3x 250mm prototypes will have to do along with 5 Ogres
