Hi folks,
Before we continue, please check out the new hull repair effect over here.
Now that you've had a look at that effect, I wanted to table an idea. CCP Myrkur and I were discussing how much we preferred the new Hull repair effect to the Armor repair effect, and felt that it might be fitting to switch these around once the Hull repair effect goes live.
What do all of you think of this idea? Any love?
Cheers,
-- CCP Sledgehammer.

You always get my love for making cool looking stuff
Anyhow, it looks like that new hull repair effect does look a little too similar to the shield booster effect. With the newer damage visuals you could do something a little different in term of different visuals for armor reps and hull reps.
We current have that golden-ish looking armor repair effect which looks really cool but with more details, why don't you make the golden effect only effect the outer armor layer and the hull-repair effect a white-ish glow on the structure beams.
I could imagine that would look like a white-blue-ish glow effect would "repair-eat" the structure beams and a golden-ish glow effect would "repair-eat" the outer hull.
Wouldn't look as cool but would be a tad more accurate to what is happening, which is that the structure beams are getting renewed and hardened and the armor layer is getting nanites that multiply exponentially create the new outer armor layer.
Or instead of that repair "pulse" that layer-effect starts small and increases in size over the course of 2 to 3 seconds.
Eve Minions is recruiting. Learn from about pvp, learn about ships and how to fly them correctly. Small gang and solo action in high, low and nullsec and w-space alike.
We will teach you everything you need and want to know.

As far as I remember the armor pulses inward towards the center of a hull damage spot, while this hull repair effect pulses outwards. I would not switch these around as the nanites crawl from the intact armor segments into the armor breach to repair it. Furthermore, the colors also fit better as they are: armor repair modules are golden-ish and have this golden-greenish repair effect while hull repair units are pale-gray with the pale-grayish effect.
Other than that I like what elitatwo suggested: keep the hull repair actually limited to the hull elements and not a blanket pulse over the entire structure. Only having looked at the GIF, the effect looks very holographic and overlay-ish to me and not really like structure damage inside the ship. That's particularly visible at the middle rear damage part above the engines, where a lot of armor is still intact but the hull reps reveal many underlying hull structure beams.

i like it but the issue might be the way this game is played. unless your sitting still a lot of players probably wont notice this, its a nice ciematic effect and would be cool if eve played more like games where things were left to chance so that you had time to notice these things. |

While the effect looks better i would not switch them around.
The current armor effect makes much more sense i think as it's focused on the damaged part and looks like an effect that could take place while in combat.
The structure effect shows the inner bulkheads and structures of the ship, not something you want to light up during a battle imo.
I do think the effect will see little use, perhaps it could be added to the repair effects from the citadel tether? |

Make the effect green and you have a deal, I always preferred the original armor rep effect and I think that one would be much closer than the current one. |

I feel it should pulse inwards rather than outwards. |

I like it, though make it pulse inward instead of outwards, also be careful not to make it look too similar to that of the shield effect.
Other than that, it looks amazing! |

great idea imho.. hull repair isn't used nearly as much as armor and it would be shame since this effect looks so good.
or I guess you could buff active hull tanking, that would kinda solve the issue too :D |

After having played with my Dominix again after a long time, I could have a really close and long look at the armor repairer effect. I can confidently say that I prefer the jittery-pixelated, inward pulsing effect of the armor repairer over this rather bland pale pulse of the hull repairer.

This isn't quite accurate, the armor hardener effect is gold, the repair effect is a sort of inverted whirlpool of white flux/energy on the damaged location.
Also the shield boost effect is on the shield bubble while this is on the hull. I think the only ship where those might be confused is the Dominix
CCP, for comparison could you throw up animated gifs of both effects side by side? Should be pretty easy to get, just repair the same ship with one after the other :) |

Yes. I always thought the armor damage looked like the structure was already torn, the ship's inside visible.
In favour of the switch.
