Really there shouldn't be a patrol at every gate. The gates themselves should be armed to replace gate guns in a similar manner to Citadels, so that we don't have NPC objects cluttering up the overview.
Then NPC patrols can actually be coded to really patrol when they are around rather than sit there like idiots. |

Isn't the patrol part what CCP was talking about during the last fanfest with actual NPC patrols and convoys transporting actually useful stuff? It has gotten awfully quiet around that idea.

I believe it's because it was melting the hamsters. The Drifter incursions were a test bed for the new AI, but they loaded the servers really badly. If they implemented the same code with patrols at every single gate it would be bad (Not sure how bad, I believe the servers 'could' take it but not ideal based on what I saw during drifter incursions.)
If they replace the gate patrols & gate guns with armed gates, then they significantly decrease clutter and decrease the number of entities which have to run improved AI. It might not immediatly lead onto new patrols, but considering how dumb the gate 'patrols' currently are, they would be no great loss if replaced by an armed gate anyway. |

If they would be just sitting there that would be fine, but they also bumping into the gate, and sometimes getting stuck too. If they wouldn't do anything at all until they needed, that would reduce the pressure on the server too |

There does need to be more NPC presence throughout hi-sec in my opinion. Four massive galaxy-spanning empires and there's barely any space traffic to speak of, besides capsuleers and a the odd customs/CONCORD vessel. |
