I've just started training some of the more advanced skills needed to use a carrier, but I'm still not sure whether to take the Amarr or the Gallente route. The extra fighter damage on the Thanatos is nice, but AFAIK it does not apply to fighters that have been assigned to gangmates, making it less useful.
Meanwhile the extra resists on the Archon give it more frontline survivability, and this resist bonus will probably be even more useful for tanking the new Level 5-7 missions that are designed for capital ships.
What do you think?

Archon has by far the best tank, Thanatos has better damage. Tank works always, damage oly works if you are controlling the fighters yourself, provided they dont get destroyed.
So overall i'd say the Archon is better.

1.25 (damagemod on thanatos) * 0.75 (resistance mod on archon) = 0.9375 <1 Which means the archon is possibly best if you're gonna use it on the field. 'Possibly' - because in any situation where the damage exeed the rep ability on the archon so that you're bound to die you'll have to figure in the shield/structure HP buffer in the equation and depending on how fast you'll die the thanatos might be better. Likewise, if the damage taken is so 'low' that the thanatos will be able to tank it forever, the thanatos will be better.
Or in other words: the archon can handle situations that the thanatos can not. But in a situation that both or neither can handle the thanatos might be better.
And the thanatos has the plus of more drone/cargo space.
Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

Edited by: Waagaa Ktlehr on 15/03/2007 10:05:12 Both ships are great and have their own pros.
Thanatos - Can remote rep both shields and armor at 40k+ (52k w/ level 5 carriers, 45 w/ level 4), this means it's very versatile. It can support any other carrier and is useful on POS recharge ops - Does more damage with it's fighters, this helps in bigger engagements vs capitals where more damage = good - Has more medslots for heavy capinjectors (If you want to go that route) - Bigger drone bay than the other carriers (Awesome for hauling valkeries down to 0.0 to melt for lowends!! )
Archon - Has more lowslots and a resist bonus, allowing crazy resists on armor. This means it has a much tougher HP buffer and allows is to tank more raw DPS. It's not hard to get every resist close to 90% and higher. - Has a better capacitor than the thanatos, easier to sustain double/triple reps and/or a remote capital transfer - Has the potency to be a great capacitor battery for other capitals if the efficiency of capital transfers ever get brought in line with the efficiency of non-capital transfers. Two Archons transfering cap to eachother could generate enough cap to run a remote rep and their own tank. :) -

Tank does not work always, tank only works if you get shot at. If the archon sits at a POS assigning fighters like the thanatos both the +resistance and +fighter damage bonus are worthless.

Edited by: Chronus26 on 15/03/2007 11:49:10 Actualy, I did some controlled testing on SiSi, and my results showed little or no difference (small difference (+-10%) but not enought to indicate skills/bonuses were/were not being applied) between Carrier controlled/Assigned/Carrier off-grid Fighters on a target with 0% resists. The wrecking hits were even for the same amount on each.
I'm not so sure about skills/bonuses not applying while assigned any more. I did write a forum post about it, but never got round to posting... -----
