Hey all,
What was your biggest speculation attempt in isk, into 1 product and / or in a product group?
Lets start myself,
Once I put 25 bil into a product group when a big mineral change was scheduled, made it back nicely.
How about all of you?

I can't remember the exact numbers, but I think it was 50 billion or something...I tried to manipulate a single item on all 5 major hubs. Right after I purchased most of the stock I realized this is going to end badly, even though I chose an item which can not be manufactured, but can be seeded only by mission runners.
As soon as the price went up suppliers did seed the item, so I had to buy their stock as well, in the end I was full of it. I managed to sell everything in two days before the price normalized again, so it was profitable after all, but very risky and I won't attempt to manipulate 5 trade hubs at once again. Jita alone is a mission impossible most of the time. |

Being less vague might help your thread.
I don't do much speculation, just the obvious things like BC/BS tiericide (where minerals almost doubled for some ships), Geckos (OP drones that were far too cheap at the start because a dozen were given to every player), CA-1/2s because people seemed hyped about the fits that were now possible with them.
More recently I bought some PI goods, built the structure components required for citadels and rode the capital ship rebalance hype pretty well. I trade BPOs anyway, but leading up to Citadel the demand for capital component BPOs grew significantly and the margins became greater than I had seen in a long time. I also stocked up on a bit of Morphite because of all the brand new capital modules that were being introduced, with their T2 counterparts using a higher ISK ratio of Morphite than the smaller versions, this definitely paid off even though I sold a k or two early .
Now I'm sitting on a pile of CA-3/4s & Yachts just waiting :p.

If you can manipulate Jita, you can manipulate the rest.
I recently bought about 10 billion worth of tech 2 sentry drones. Almost all of them were purchased in Jita, but I bought out all of the hubs.

That's exactly what I did - I bought from all hubs, but sold most of the stock in Jita.
On a second thought my biggest bet was and still is 200 PLEX which by looking at the market prices might see the sun light soon
RIP Plex price thread. I am sure somebody else will make a new one. |

I don't do market 'manipulation'. I don't have deep enough pocket to compete with big boys (and girls!). I do more market study and buy things that I feel are quite undervalued and I reasonably expect them to adjust to where they 'should be' (not necessarily where they 'were' before).
I tens to look at production and supply chain of my target item/group, and buy the raw/intermediary materials together with the end product. The one I'm committed to at the moment in such fashion is about 100+b, and prices have started adjusting and I'm selling off my stock slowly at the moment.
For a specific example I can give now, since I have already cashed out, was T2 salvages before citadels were announced in detail. As soon as I figured that Citadels are going to have rigs, I invested heavily into salvage mats. PI was something people could farm and supply, but T2 salvages were something that can't be farmed easily. I made pretty nice return on those.

For some reason, before the "Integrated analysers" were disclosed, the price for High-tec scanner, data ship, manufacturing tools and small arms was around 900isk in Amarr and someone had a sizeable buy order for those, paying 10kISK for each.
Although I made around 400m ISK profit, I wish I had bought more and not sold it to that by order in Jita. Would have been a *very nice* return of investment. |

Just out of curiosity, I assume that was Raven State Issue? I can't think of any single item that cost that much - could be Imperial Apoc, Federate Mega or Tribal Tempest, but I just haven't seen them traded in past few years (or maybe they get circulated only for those in the know...).
I can afford (if I really stretch it lol) & can imagine flying AT ships (although the inevitably resulting loltastic fail KM would haunt me for the rest of my eve career k), RSI is just waaaay out of my league. :p
Not sure if you've ever flown it while it was in your posession, but respect for having owned it at one point at least. o7

I am seeing all these crazy isk values being thrown around. I am having to assume that you have multiple chars doing this to achieve these numbers, or am I wrong?
Have always been curious on the market and was wondering what I need to get started.
This would cure me of the fear...

Have always been curious on the market and was wondering what I need to get started. Some of us use lots of characters for trade (I've used as many as 40 at once with 305 orders each) some of us don't even need the full order count of one character to make massive amounts of ISK. Certainly there is no need to feel you have to have multiple accounts, although one character on an account being dedicated to trading is probably a good idea.
The best way to get started, is to get started.
Dabble with a small amount of isk (not everything you have) and see what your experience is. Talk to and listen to other traders (in the SCC Lounge, in this forum section, on EVE streams, on EVE news sites) and see if you can gather any knowledge applicable to what your are doing. Don't make the mistake of adopting someone elses trading style just because they tell you this is how to trade, find out what works for you and what doesn't. Don't expect to become an expert overnight. Do expect to make mistakes, try to learn from mistakes rather than be discouraged by them. |
