I just saw an interesting remark by one of the game developers:
Quote:I can't speak to the structure team's specific plans, but my understanding is that phasing out player-owned starbases is a long-term goal that requires a lot more development of current and not-yet-existing structures. There will be plenty of advance notice of the details before anything like that happens.
I think it's an interesting comment because I did not know phasing out player-owned starbases would ever happen, because it seems like such an integral part of Eve Online. Moon mining and making (previously illegal) drugs comes to mind. Illicit drug manufacture was my favorite part of Eve Online, by the way, so that was my experience with starbases.
I really enjoyed it! But I'm interested to know what problems POS cause to the Eve Online vision moving forward. Are they just too clunky? Immersion-breaking? They're certainly tedious, but I enjoyed the mechanics of it while using one. So what is the goal, in this sense, and what would Eve Online look like without starbases (and what might be their replacements)?

This one for example (the very first on th new structures):
https://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/back-into-the-structure/
See the diagram at the bottom.
The most recent word is no new POS from the end of this year. I suspect that won't happen.

I'll try to find it.

The code for POS and Outposts are some of the oldest systems left in the game at this point. There is some code in there that hasn't been touched in over a decade. Not to mention that people had been yelling and screaming for a new POS system since 2006 as far as I can remember. They do their job okayish, but they have a lot of issues and their management interface is terrible.
The new structures provide new, modern and optimized code. Allow the old legacy code to be removed completely. Add new, better features. Better interface and all around better gameplay.

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

Yes, POS and outposts are going to be phased out.
That's been the stated plan from the very beginning.
As functionality is introduced into the replacement structures (they're not all citadels. Citadels are the defensive ones. They'll be able to do other things, but not as well) it'll be turned down, then off in POS and citadels.

Some of us haven't but yes, there are Devblogs folks...
Citadels are just the first and shiniest of the replacement structures. You'll be seeing an array of new structures around systems and once the POS/NPS functions are fully replaced, you'll see them gone, or probably for the most part gone. My bet is you will still see a large number of NPC stations remaining in HiSec (it only makes sense since it is empire space) but maybe a handful in LoSec and none in NullSec. Stronger fees and costs for NPC stations that remain in an effort to off-load players to player stations but you might find some serious solo, player adverse pilots willing to stay at the NPC stations, which is fine, lower risk, lower reward and all that.
Give CCP time to do this. I'd rather have them do it right slowly than do it wrong fast.

I can see how a citadel will replace an outpost, but I think a whole opportunity is being wiped out by removing POS from the game.
You could maybe take a small poss and base yourself in a system far away for a small period of time and it has that temporary feel like potacabins to it rather than the more immovable objects that are citadels (I know the can be destroyed).

Small citadels and yet-to-be-announced structures. It would be relatively easy to replace that with deployables and some of the skeleton exists today with the mobile-base-whatver-it's-named. |

Keep in mind that only 1 of the possible 5 or 6 new structure types have been implemented so far. The Citadels are some of the largest and most expensive structures. From what I've heard the upcoming Industrial Arrays and Drilling Platforms will be a lot smaller and a fair bit cheaper. The cost of a medium Industrial Array might become similar to that of a small POS right now.

Don't worry, it took 2 years to release a "just around the corner" domi overhaul, poses being phased out in 2017 will end up more like 2030 *poke*
My corp lived out of a pos for a year, hope I won't have to ever again. Mess with fuel, mess with personal items, bugged roles and access to hangars, bugged cans, bugged guns that blew up blues despite settings set up correctly, could not assemble a t3 and the list goes on and on. 10/10 won't miss them, also the new structures look cool and you can ship spin in them (most important factor). |
