Performed my normal routine for the PI this morning. I have 4 dedicated PI characters with a total of 22 planets on two accounts. Extraction planets, basic production planets, advanced production planets... I sincerely believe that I have a very efficient setup for producing just about any level of product.
I gathered resources and moved extraction heads on 16 planets, exchanged P1-P3 material on the production planets and redocked all characters in about 90 minutes time. Now I did not have to build any new colony for production of material, nor did I have to remove and rebuild extraction to a new part of a planet. The click count would have been much higher I am sure.
I tried to keep a meticulous count of the mouse clicks and came to the subject line mentioned.
My question for the community is the following...
Why do we not all have forearms the size of Hercules?! |

Perfectly stated!
I love PI. I am OCD enough to actually enjoy PI the way it is. The observation is how click intensive and tedious the process is. I get tremendous satisfaction in setting up an elegant colony and seeing the result of my work translate into iskies! |

I dream that one day, PI layouts can be shareable just like overview settings or fittings. |

Some slightly fuzzy, back of the napkin math has me at something around the 400'ish clicks/day minimum to recycle my ECUs and refill factories from a POCO. This doesn't include any warping, collecting or delivering goods. It's probably way more.
That's with 36 planets across seven characters, which is testing my limits for Farmville In Space. PI is only a major hassle to setup. Once you have it humming, it's mostly just resetting the ECUs and counting the profits.

The clicking to set PI up is a royal pain, I wish we could save some templates and/or determine what PI material the factories will deal in (so you dont have to choose water or whatever from each one that you lay down). But once it is up and running I find it fairly easy to run |

OP: you can create a less work required setup if you're willing to sacrifice some profit.
I can reset about the same number of planets as you in 15 minutes. I only create P2 planets in the same system. I have 1 factory planet producing 1 P4 plus 2 P3 products. I run a 3 day cycle. Hauling is required about every 10 days.

I wish that CCP would dumb PI down like they did with probes. Let us "pre-set" our layouts, save them, and repeat them on planets (first placement of colonies).
This would make have a very positive impact on my life. |

This would make have a very positive impact on my life. Surely the easier it is, and the quicker they make it, the more people will jump on board, driving down the prices. That would have a very negative impact on my life :(

Same with scanning, they made it so easy that all of the loot from scanning dropped to a 10th of its price in a matter of days. |

Less clicking doesn't make it "easier", just less tedious. The same thing with probing. The old system was made from someone inside an insane asylum, you would need to be mental to want that garbage back.
Hopefully the cookie clicker PI-system goes the same way one day. |

I believe most explorers (the ones making money out of exploration) would happely go back in time and not have the new probing dumb-down. |

Ummm no. I remember the old probing.. NO.. F that! It's fine the way it is. To balance the profit loss they just need to make.. (haven't done it in a while) data sites? more valuable.

Well, too bad more people didn't push for my proposal to have the ability to create tier products in Citadels, would have cut down on some of the clickity clicks. |

The whole profit loss is because the easier scanning shifted the balance in supply/demand. The best solution is probably to *reduce* the amount of good drops, to rebalance the supply/demand.
They basicly made it easier to find item X, which crashed the price of X. When the "hassle" of aquiring LP's is reduced by great means, LP value will crash as well. |

I have made similar thread complaining about PI with 3 characters and the general response was: We like it, suck up and shut up. So I just quit PI for good. And looking in SISI how CCP makes access to vital components like fittings worse than better I don't see how this will ever be improved. For example: to access project discovery, something I never use and which is imho a total useless feature, I need only one click. But if I want to quickly access fitings I have to make THREE clicks and load several ticks the current ship with the fit! |

PI should definitely be more user-friendly. The income from PI should come from intelligence and risk, not the player's physical pain tolerance. |
