OK, I'm trying to fit out an Algos for some solo PVP, mostly because I want to understand it better so I can deal with gankers when I'm exploring.
I can do either Gallente or Minmatar destroyers - my skills are actually higher for Minmatar, but this fit is better than anything I've come up with for my Thrasher.
I'm really new to PVP, so I just want to tool around in something cheap like this and probably get killed a lot, and not lose a lot of money in the process.
Here's my PVP Algos fit, designed to track down signatures so I can find players to murder.
Quote:[Algos, Ahoy Mateys! Yarr!] Co-Processor I Drone Damage Amplifier I Drone Damage Amplifier I
Stasis Webifier I J5b Enduring Warp Scrambler 1MN Y-S8 Compact Afterburner
125mm Compressed Coil Gun I 125mm Compressed Coil Gun I 125mm Compressed Coil Gun I 75mm Gatling Rail I Core Probe Launcher I Prototype Cloaking Device I
[Empty Rig slot] Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I Small Hybrid Locus Coordinator I
Hobgoblin I x8
The weird 75mm Gatling is just a gun I stuck in there to maximize DPS with the CPU I had left.
Feel free to tear it apart. |

Well, it won't hurt my feelings to lose a few of these at about 1.5 mil each. Not after I lost an 80 mil Astero and a 40 mil Cheetah today. :( |

Take the cloak off, and swap the core probes for combat probes. I know what you're intending on using the cloak for, but it's not going to work. Non-covops cloaks have penalties that make them horrible for PVP.
You're quite slow with just an AB fitted, and you have zero tank. |

Well I'm going to have to get the jump on people to make this work, so driving around uncloaked won't work. In my experience exploring, I can see an uncloaked ship coming a mile away, and combat probes are the same problem. I've never been caught exploring by combat probes.
ETA: Yeah, to put a expanded probe launcher on this... if it's even possible, I'd have to remove basically everything else. |

try something like this, upgrade to T2 fittings as skills/wallet allow.
[Algos, 10MN Man Tank] Damage Control II Drone Damage Amplifier II Drone Damage Amplifier II <- you can put a Bulkhead in here for more tank if you like
10MN Y-S8 Compact Afterburner X5 Enduring Stasis Webifier Faint Epsilon Scoped Warp Scrambler
75mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S 75mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S 75mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S 75mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S 75mm Prototype Gauss Gun, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Small Infectious Scoped Energy Neutralizer
Small Transverse Bulkhead I Small Transverse Bulkhead I Small Transverse Bulkhead I
Acolyte I x3 Infiltrator I x2
you can cram a probe launcher in place of the neut if you really want to. getting an expanded probe launcher on an Algos isn't going to be easy without completely gimping the fit.

The targeting delay on the cloak is what's going to let everyone you catch slip past you.
Cloaking and Combat Probing are a very powerful combination, which is why they have such large CPU costs on non-bonused ships. |

Yeah... that's one of those things I hadn't considered. I'm used to my Cheetah, 5 seconds. You're right, in 15 seconds a POS could get away from me. I guess that's why people use bombers for this, like that guy that KILLED MY CHEETAH. Ahem. I'm ok, I'm ok... Hmm. Want some real good advice?
Put the name of that guy who blew up your Cheetah in a safe place somewhere...and keep it.
Hold on to that name because there is a good chance, later on down in your Eve career, you will come across him/her again. When they least expect it, blow them up...and then link your Cheetah KM to him/her.
He/she will appreciate it.
This would cure me of the fear...

He/she will appreciate it. That's bad advice. When you lose a ship, just let it go and move on.
If you only lose 2 ships, chances are you're not going to have the PvP experience to teach anyone a lesson. If you lose a hundred ships... well which ones do you go after? Full time job trying to get even with all that lot. |

Back to the original question.
The strength of the Algos is in it's drones. IMO you shouldn't be attempting to PvP in a drone boat with poor Drone skills, which they must be if you are using T1 drones. So I'd advise either get your drone skills up or use another ship.
The cloaking device is a bad choice for a solo PvP boat. The decloaking delay to targetting means anything you can kill will likely be gone before you can even start targetting them. I presume your plan is to scan down low sec Data and Relic sites and then sit in them cloaked up waiting for explorers. It used to be possible to bump decloak your ship, which ignores the targetting delay. This means that if you approach to within 2000 metres of an object, it will decloak you and you can immediately start targetting. Whereas if you drop your cloak manually the targetting delay occurs. I'm not sure whether this is still the case.
Even if it is, you are still gimped by your cloaked speed penalty, which will drag an Algos down to about 40 m/s while cloaked. Low sec data and relic sites aren't frequented as often as high sec ones. You're going to spend hours in one waiting for a victim, then when he arrives you will need to be close to one of the hacking can, hope he goes for that one and then crawl in trying to bump decloak your ship. Unfortunately, the mechanics surrounding cloaks are not an exact science. It not always obvious when the cloak drops (more specifically when you appear to other players) and it isn't always 2000 metres when the server notices that you should be decloaked. Thus it is possible for your victim to approach the can, hack it and leave while you're screaming at your screen for the stupid mechanics to decloak you. Then you finally decloak when there is no hope of you catching him and just look like an idiot.
Of course the exception is when someone else does it to you. Always works perfectly for them. |
