Greetings fellow capsuleers!
I have been doing a lot of reading lately on Citadels, new proposed structures and POSes and trying to gain some understanding of their roles in the future. But as we are aware, CCP is keeping a lot of information close to its chest, either because it is in development still, or they just do not know what direction they are going to take with some of the existing mechanics.
We already know that CCP wants to phase out POSes, replacing them with Citadels and the Industrial Arrays being released in the Fall, but there are still many questions on other aspects of POSes that, as of date, have not been answered. The main one for me, is Jump Bridges, for which there is little indication currently on changes to these if and when POSes are finally phased out.
From a personal view, I think that a new, stand-alone deployable structure, or stand-alone module, would be the way forward, maybe similar to the Drilling Platforms coming out in the Winter release. Potential limitations and requirements that could be deployed are:
FUEL - A fuel requirement for the structure in its own fuel bay. Like Citadels, any type of fuel block could be used with a rate of, lets say, 5 blocks an hour (3,600 per 30 day cycle).
DEPLOYMENT - The new JB structure can be deployed anywhere in a system, and not tied to within set distances of other structures, as long as a Corporation/Alliance either holds SOV or possesses a Citadel within that system. As standard, a JB structure would be launched for Corporation and there should be a skill set required to be able to do this. Deployment should also be limited to per Corp within a system (maybe a set number allowed depending on Citadel size held by Corp? 1 JB for a medium, 2 for large and 3 for XL?)
OPERATIONS - Currently, a POS JB will allow you to jump from point A to point B. With sensible limitations applied, I think an multi-directional, or networked, JB structure would be the way forward, allowing you to jump to a maximum of, lets say, 3 JBs that are linked through a JB management screen and your destination can be set to 'JB A', or 'JB B', or 'LB C' via a drop down menu that replaces the current 'Jump to xxxx' command. JB range could remain at a 5LY limit and Jump Fatigue timers would still apply.
JB LINKING - Although deployed for Corporation, JBs should be able to be linked to Alliance held structures within JB management window, especially if multi-directional JBs are a possible feature. I mean, not many Corps will be able to afford 3 Citadels in 3 systems to use a potential networked JB system. Instead, Alliances can allow access through Access List and Profiles and then a Corp can link to that JB under their management window under an 'Alliance held JB' heading, but would only be able to link depending on Access List and Profile settings by the Alliance.
SECURITY - Vulnerability windows should play a part of a JB life, as do existing structures. Access can be handled through Access Lists and Profiles as current. Obviously, the structure would require some defensive HP allocation, but unlike other structures, would not be able to deal DPS (unless you want defences to protect the JB? In that case, more of a structure with fitting slot allocations?).
These are just some ideas, and not necessarily practical from a coding point of view, but I'm interested to see what other people's views and ideas are as to the way forward for JBs in the game.
