There are useful tools that need APIs to work properly. If a corp isn't going to use the API, they shouldn't need to ask for it. Couple of people have mentioned third party tools, or simply checking skills.
I'm confused about the paranoia. I understand wanting privacy, but if it was as simple as that there wouldn't be a protest, simply avoidance. Outting yourself as someone that hates API checks serves the opposite purpose of wanting privacy, doesn't it? |

I have taken no trouble whatsoever to avoid antagonizing people with my opinions for a decade on these forums, and have never been troubled in turn. Quite the reverse. So...your problem with me...is that I'm not offensive *enough* to people, and I post things to *stop* antagonizing them? edit: TBH I think you are the one who grossly overestimates how seriously I take the forums... I mean I do post my honest opinions, even when they are controversial - and I make an effort not to slip into just pure trolling... But I also throw in a lot of scarcasm/humour that seems to wiz right past many of your heads. Now, I'm not saying it goes *over* all your heads (which would imply I'm smarter/more sophisticated than you) - for many of you it probably flies past to the side simply because I have an odd sense of humour... But regardless I know the people who *do* understand my sense of humour (and yes, there are a fair few of them around here) are a lot happier than the rest of you who take everything so super seriously and get butt-hurt over everything... For **** sake guys - it is an *internet forum* about a *video game*. It isn't even the video game itself... But some of you get so worked up over the dumbest little issues that one would think you take things said here more seriously than the game itself...or even than RL itself...
No I don't think you're too inoffensive. What I was implying was that I think you're being ridiculous in thinking that you're offensive enough to face consequences for your posting. If a professional ******* like me can consequencelessly post for a decade on my main, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
From my perspective, posting on an anonymous alt is tantamount to believing that your post won't be something you want to put your name to. If it's not good enough for you to own it in your opinion, then that diminishes the credibility of what you're saying IMO.

Couple of people have mentioned third party tools, or simply checking skills. Absolutely there are. Corp/Alliance forums, IRC, mumble/TS, bespoke packages (eg. TEST Intel system, lists of timers, etc.) often use API information to automatically authenticate members and control access.
Many Alliances/Corps use API information for those sorts of things.
However, generally those tools require no more information than what's in the charinfo xml api endpoint. If there is an ability to check skills against doctrine fits and recommend skill plans, then the skills endpoint, or the charactersheet information is sufficient.
That's a long way short of full API access, which isn't really about providing tools and services to members.

I personally don't care in the slightest, but as a recruiter and the IT guy for our Alliance, it's in my best interest to only ask for the minimum access needed as part of recruiting new members. We don't rely on API information to ensure our asset security.

Malcanis wrote:Irrelevant Dribble #1 - I've explained numerous times why I use a forum alt - and it isn't about "hiding" primarily - so you should probably learn to read. Your post is a good example though - look how angry you are getting, how deeply you care...And I didn't even *say anything to you* to trigger your initial post - I just existed.
#2 - Only ****ing idiots put their real name to *anything* on the internet. I literally cringe every time I see someone leaving comments on some random website under their real name, knowing the sorts of lunatics around. In fact in EVE it is *against the rules* to post using your *real name* - for exactly that reason. Your main account is not the "real you" - even if by some miracle you don't have any alts you could switch to if you felt like it at any reason. In the end we are all talking behind Video Game Character Avatars - and it is none of your ****ing business what avatars I choose to represent myself in any given part of the game.
#3 - You hide from anybody who *might* want to retaliate against you based on forum posts behind your blob in null-sec. Hiding is hiding - Mr. Pot.

It seems DFA can't understand the why's and wherefores of the negative responses.
You and I have actually had this discussion before (about how you tend to talk about things you don't actually know about), you can hide behind "i have a weird sense of humor" but what you are actually doing is coming off as just another disingenuous forum troll that doesn't want to have a conversation with other grown folks. no one is saying you have to be super serious about anything, but I don't think I'm alone in thinking what I just thought.
Now, don't think I'm telling you how to post, I'm simply offering you my perspective on why you keep ending up in these kinds of circle jerk discussions where you have to turn all defensive. I am suggesting that it might not be a bad idea to think a bit before posting, but not telling you you have to do anything. Take it (or not) however you want to. |

OK - In general, I'll concede, you are correct. I get into a lot of these discussions, and many are my own fault because yes, i do post about things I don't know about more often than I probably should - and I definitely jump in and post faster than I should sometimes (as I've said before, I post much as I fly, which is recklessly).
In *this* specific thread, however - I actually did put in some serious posts with viable information - and people have chosen to focus in on my sarcastic joke post and ignore my serious posts... And now they seem to be hung up on my using a forum alt. That is why I brought up the sense of humour here. Honestly I thought my comment demanding API keys from everyone was self-evidently sarcastic.... Apparently a few people didn't get it
