I am an explorer, currently flying a Probe running data/relic sites in low sec. About 3 in-game days old. I was wondering if anyone can suggest my next ship so that I can continue to do exploration, possibly in null sec? I was thinking Cheetah... |

Astero is just more polyvalent than Cov ops is also pricier ,atm i d sacrifice a few Probe until you master the basics of flying in null sec. But id definitivly recommand you to train for a decent all 4 astero before looking at covops especially if you want to run sites that actually carry ISK. |

WELCOME NEWBRO FRIEND!
The Cheetah is a good choice of ship for this purpose. If you're not too heavily invested into Minmatar Frigate, you may wish to switch to training Caldari to take advantage of the Buzzard T2 CovOps frigate which has an extra Midslot (useful for analyzers or scanning arrays), while maintaining three High Slots (Probe Launcher, Cloak + Utility). But, the Cheetah will certainly get the job done and is a capable boat.
The Astero is also a lovely little boat for scanning and exploration with minimal pre-requisits. However, once you train CovOps IV you will probe better with a T2 CovOps ship. The T2 ships are also around one third the price of an Astero hull. The Astero, depending on fit, is far more combat capable than the T2 CovOps. The Stratios is the Astero's cruiser-sized big brother. The probing and hacking/archeology bonuses are the same, but it's got a lot more tank and combat ability.
The *ultimate* hostile space exploration ship is probably a Tengu, Caldari T3 Cruiser. These things have somewhat insane skill pre-requisits, but the ability to warp cloaked AND ignore warp bubbles is something only T3 Cruisers (and Luxury Yachts) can do. This is way, way down the track and I'm sure someone will chime in shortly to argue for the Proteus in this role.

Thanks for all your help, Mephiztopheles!
I really like the Asteros, but feel like the price tag intimidates me a little. I'm not too deeply invested in Minmatar ships at the moment, so I might thinking about switching to Caldari eventually...
Anyway, we just started a convo in-game so I'll just end by saying thanks again. |

While the suggestion is sound, I wouldn't recommend flying a pirate faction ship in the first week in New Eden.
You need to train so many things to have a real appreciation for that ship that a week is not enough. The Astero is a very fine ship, don't get me wrong here.
I love the astero but my advice is that you continue to train your minmatar skills a little longer and go with the cheater, Get a feel for the ship and do your relic sites. Then look at the other frigates a little and try out an anomaly in highsec, a Burrow maybe for starter and then maybe a "Refuge", so you get a little combat feels.
When you are more comfortable in those situations you will know your ships so well that you know what you can and what you cannot or should not do.
Fly around with the cloak a little. Look where you land, when you warp to something. Learn when it is a good time to decloak and when to wait a little and get your bearings first.
When you have done that, you can start training the other ships and you will appreciate the Astero much more.
Eve Minions is recruiting. Learn from about pvp, learn about ships and how to fly them correctly. Small gang and solo action in high, low and nullsec and w-space alike.
We will teach you everything you need and want to know.

While Asteros make for good hunters, they're also overpriced elitist snobvehicles. For dodging bubblecamps, you'll find the superior velocity of a true Minmatar design invaluable.

That akward moment you realize an astero is faster than a cheetah in avoidance fit :) -Astero x2 nano x2 stab x1 mn compact AB =1197m/s - Cheetah 2 x stab ans x1 nano x1 mn compact ab =1055 m/s . Align time on an Astero with 2 nano is 1.9 s on a cheetah it's 4.3 s , astero even have the luxury to warp out in less than 3 s if your forgot to turn off your prop mod. -Astero can also run sleeper cache and clean ghost site good luck doing that in a Covops -Astero can kill other covops in site :)
Except that Astero is indeed an "overpriced elitist snobvehicle". |

Try nanoes and a MWD -- forget about stabs, you have neither the CPU nor the leisure to fit them and they don't work outside lowsec anyway ;-)
a dash of cloak, a pinch of MWD and --zoooooooooom-- never to be heard from again ;-) |

true, true ..... such are the hardships of spacetravel in this day and age. I was never the blappy kind but I decloaked a fair number of covert explodation vessels in my time
Seeing all that effort vapourize in a few quick flashes always moved me. Unlike other ships, you can really see in the cargohold that ship's been places. Sometimes we saw them labour for fourty minutes before heading home, system all clear, pockets lined with silver and gold.
And then
dust scattered in perpetual darkness
exploring the unknown once more
poetry in motion, for just one second, before it transcends
becomes something so much smaller it can almost touch
something so much greater
the promise of life eternal
a wreck
the birth of a new relic
the silence of the ages

Thanks for your input everyone... I think I will try out the Cheetah first, simply because it's more in my price range: for now. That way if I lose it, it won't feel like a huge setback. I can make the price of a Cheetah back in a day (if it's a good day). |
