Just got a shiny new laptop from Dell and lo and behold it came with DX10 installed.
Tried booting up EVE and it loaded with an error saying could not find correct DX version and renders artifacts over the screen.
Quick question: Is there a workaround to getting EVE to work with DX10, or do I need to uninstall it and go back to DX9/
Thanks in advance

Congrats on the new computer. I'll see if I can't grab a graphics programmer to get his comment on this. _______________ |

If it's DX10, then you're on Vista, and there's no going back to DX9. Right now there's a ton of problems with 3D card drivers and Vista, one of the reasons Dell's gaming rigs ship with XP Media Center pre-installed, and a Vista upgrade disc in the box.
Still, I haven't heard of people having huge issues with EVE on Vista. Have you looked at the Technology forum here to see if others have had problems?

a dx10 laptop video card? o_O how long is the battery life? 15 minutes? I guess thats all youd need to cook breakfast on it, the heat must be insane.

There's your problem.
Seriously though, Dx10 and Vista are still in early stages of "consumer-proofing" anyhow. Best wait till Vista has it's first service pack and Dx10 games come out. *

I've never had a good experience with Dell. Don't know what the problem could be though.

Actually i love their 24 inch TFT. Wouldn't touch their PCs with a stick though.
You have vista installed. Maybe you have to install directX9L. Not sure if it comes with that one preinstalled. It makes DX9 games run under Vista. Eve does run on Vista so it should run on your laptop too.

OMG, I dont think I have EVER gotten such responses.. especially from a DEV.. thanks Tuxford, I look forward to your results.
Yes Yes, I know I took a risk with Dell and Vita but here we are. Usually I go Alienware, but I got an AMAZING deal from my business from Dell so I had to get it, plus Alienware ****ed me off (and now owned by dell).
The laptop is mostly for work anyway.. but what EVE player can resist installing their client on EVERY computer they own.. I mean come on LOL
As far as the DX10 video card, I was thinking the same thing since I was under the impression that there was none available. And just to let you know, there is BARELY any heat coming from the thing and the battery life is about 1.25 hours under heavy strain, 2+ if I am just doing some browsing and such, so I am quite happy with that.
I did try searching the forums but found nothing about current machines running DX10, I did not even think it was out until I got the laptop, as a friend of mine is running Vita with DX9 and everything runs fine.
I appreciate the input, help feed my addiction.

Maybe too obvious to mention but you never know...
Have you updated all relevant drivers to the latest available? "New" computers are often fairly out-of-date driver wise.

I saw a post here stating how to run EVE under Vista. As far as I remember guy ran EVE in some sort of compatibility mode. You will find this option most likely in EVE EXE file properties. Can't help more because I will stay away from Vista as long as I can.

Similar specs on my Inspiron (2.0GHz) and I had no problems running eve with DX10.

Yeah, I tried that. But I'll call dell up and see if there are any other hidden that they have not published.
I see others are running it fine on DX10 so I gotta do some more digging I guess.
Thanks all, appreciate it.

I'm running eve with Vista, no problems here. DX10 and DX9 can both be installed on the same system at the same time. Games that use DX10 will use DX10, and the older games will use the DX9 api.
Find a redist of DX9 and install it, and it should work fine.
Originally by: Tuxford It was a dirty hack to be honest but we couldn't find anyway around it. I hope we never have to do it again.

Well there is your problem right there. Your running an ATI x1400. There are only 3 DX10 cards on the market the Nvidia 8800GTX and two flavors of the 8800GTS. ATI has yet to release DX10 hardware. Also I was under the impression that DX10 hasent been released yet, that it will be coming later this year in a SP? Anyways download the correct drivers for your ATI x1400, make sure you get the vista version. Use drivercleaner to wipe the old video driver, then install the drivers you just downloaded. If that doesn't fix it you might have a hardware failure. Anyways good luck!

Apart from dropping in d3dx9_27.dll - d3dx9_28.dll - d3dx9_29.dll and d3dx9_30.dll into Windows\system32 I don't have any problem running EVE on Vista.
I run in 1280x1024 window mode (cos I have more than 1 session running at once).
I dropped the above dx9 files in though to get some other games working not specifically EVE. You don't have to do anything with the files just drop em in the directory and Windows uses them.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron E1505 with the ATI X1400 and Vista 64bit. Works like a charm. It will work.
Master, some questions for you: Did Vista come preinstalled on the machine? If not, did you do an upgrade (i.e. install over XP?) Can you tell me what version drivers you are running and where you obtained them?
We'll see if we can get you up and running...=)

CCP.. can you buy out Microsoft? I have more faith in you guys.
I am hunting down all the drivers and such I can and will install them when I get home to my little laptop. If you guys have any links that you think may be helpful, it will be much appreciated.

I'm trying to find the drivers for the card now but Dell doesn't seem to have them posted anymore. Funny, becuase they were earlier. I'd advice against using the ATI drivers from their site. I had many problems and crashes with them. My current drivers are actually downloaded from Windows Update. They released a new set about a month ago. I'll give you the info below:
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM) Provider: ATI Technologies, Inc. Date: 8/25/2006 Version: 7.14.10.8333 Signer: microsoft windows hardware compatability publisher
Oh, and let us know if you're running the 32 or 64bit version of Vista. And as a final suggestion, if you did put Vista on your laptop yourself, make sure the Intel chipset drivers are loaded. I think they're installed with Vista by default, but swing by support.intel.com and grab the Chipset Installation Utility just to make sure.
Let us know how it goes!

there you go homie.
EDit: oops myfault, I didn't see the above post suggesting NOT to use drivers from the ATI site. Anyways listen to the dude running the same hardware as you, as I'm just making guesses based on your posts. Whatever it is, it's not the DX10 version of Eve - that's pretty much only on the computer next to me. The ATI X1400 is not DX10, it's DX9 Shader Model 3.0, so it wouldn't support it if it were.
I recommend that you get the latest ATI drivers for your card on Vista and see if that helps.

And you said you advise AGAINST drivers from the site? Just DLed it.
Wish I had brought my laptop with me today to trouble shoot as we go.

Edited by: Gainremi on 21/03/2007 16:18:58 You don't need a DX10 graphics chip to run DX10. Just like you didn't need a DX9 card to to be able to use DX9. It's just that the DX9 chip can't use the advanced acceleration features of DX10.
So in recap, there are DX10 hardware available. Just none for laptops as of now. X1400 is a DX9 part which runs EVE just fine in a laptop with Vista DX10 installed. I used a Fujitsu Siemens laptop with X1800 part which is a same generation part, albeit a bit more powerful.
You could try updating to the latest drivers, try using ones directly from ATI's site.

Sorry, but this is wrong. It has been correct ever since up to DX9, but you can ONLY use DX10 if your graphics card is a native DX10 card.

I had some business to do at the CeBit in Hannover earlier this week. I took the chance and went to Toshiba and asked them about the probable release date of DX10 for their laptops.
It will not be before 3rd/4th quarter this year. And that came from a sales rep. And when the first machines with a DX10 chip hit the market, expect a steep premium to be payed for it.
So Vista may already support DX10, laptop graphic cards won't for at least another half a year.

I'm afraid this is only 50% of the truth...
DX10 runs on DX10 cards (doh), AND on DX 9 cards with all features enabled that the card supports, thus behaving like DX9. So if you run Vista/DX10 and experience problems, it's the drivers, not the OS nor a DX incompatibility with the card.

At the moment, there are only 2 DX10 compliant (notice the difference between compliant and compatible) graphics cards in existence - The GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX. As of yet there is no mobile (=laptop) version of the 8000 series, and ATI has yet to release their new range of cards.
A further explanation: Many manufacturers of ready-built PC's (HP, Dell etc) stick the sticker "Vista Ready" / "Vista Compatible" on their computers, but this is misleading. Whether or not a computer can run Vista is a different matter from whether it can use all it's features (like DX10). It's the same as the guy who got Doom 3 working on 2 Voodoo 2's in SLI (a VERY old 3d card - nothing to do with NVidia). It works, but it's not necessarily how the developers of either game or hardware were intending it to be used.
For now, ignore anything with a Vista sticker on it and run Windows XP on it, unless it's got a DX10 compliant card in it (GF 8000 series), and even then it's a matter of weighing your priorities (do you want a shiny new interface or a working operating system).
In short: Ignore all "Vista Ready" stickers on computers for now. Ask the salesman if the laptop you're buying is Vista compliant (not compatible - big difference). If he says yes, leave the shop since he's either lying or is completely unaware of what computers are.
