I'm looking to do some ratting and fleet/small group pvp and I'm looking for a good passive shield tank. Any suggestions?

Edited by: Dikat on 21/03/2007 20:51:36 My suggestion would be to sell the myrmidon and buy a dominix. You're looking at an extra 20mil to get a far better ship and the myrmidon is far from agile. For small group pvp you're better off with a Vexor. Put 3x sentry drone dmg rigs and 3 sentries and once the target is locked down by someone else in your group (or yourself if you have the slots available), you will crucify them. Also you can buy 5 or 6 vexors for the price of 1 myrmidon (without the dmg rigs of course) .
If you want to passive tank it then try 2x explosive rig, 1x thermal rig, 1x eanm, 1x damage control and then play with the remaining slots as you see fit.

/signed about getting a Domi.
I don't know about the highs but here's what i'd put in the lows and mids:
1 x LSE 1 x EM hardy 1 x Therm hardy 1 x Invuln Field 1 x 20km scram
2 x PDU 5 x SPR
Add a kinetic shield resist rig and 2 x shield hp rigs, and you're good to go I reckon.
Remember to pack a few web drons. ---

Well, you need to make some decisions: 1) How much do you want to spend? If you want a good passive shield tank you need SPR IIs at a cost of about 18M apiece times six low slots.
2) What do you want the ship to be able to do in a small gang for PvP? Is someone else going to take care of scrambling and webbing your enemy or do you need to take up some mids with MWD, webber, and scram?
3) What are your gun skills vs. your drone skills like? A myrmidon doesn't get any gun bonus, but it does have a nice drone bonus, so presumably you'll be using those as your primary damage source, but if you have, say, good projectile weapon skills, those can add in some extra dps at no cap cost for you.
If you want some optimal passive shield tank ideas for a myrmidon I posted a couple here, but they are definitely intended more for PvE... your mileage may vary when it comes to using them for PvP.

WredStorm, that looks pretty nice. Now though, I'm wondering whether I should outfit my Domi that I already have with a shield tank? Would I be happier with that do you think? How would I set that one up then? The same as I would my BC?

Edited by: Nitrogendixoide on 22/03/2007 00:13:50 Edited by: Nitrogendixoide on 22/03/2007 00:11:13 I applied the same gear to the domi in quick fit and I'm getting a lower max shield regen.
411 on the domi and a 572 on the Myrmidon.
All applicable skills at level 4, the 5% bonus to shield total and shield regen rate from implants, and this:
(Dominix)
MED-SLOTS : ~~~~~~~~~~~~ LSE II LSE II LSE II LSE II LSE II
LOW-SLOTS : ~~~~~~~~~~~~ SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II
RIG-SLOTS : ~~~~~~~~~~~~ CDFP I CDFP I CDFP I
SHIP'S ATTRIBUTES : ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Powergrid : 660.0 MW / 11250.0 MW CPU : 235.6 tf / 750.0 tf Capacitor (regen) : 5500.0 Energy (7109.77sec) Max Cap Regen : 1.9 per sec (approx.) Max Cap Needed : 0.0 per sec Signature : 725.395 m Shield HP (regen) : 23428.44 HP (142.47sec) Max Shield Regen : 411.12 per sec (approx.) Shield EM : 0.0 % Shield Explo : 60.0 % Shield Kinetic : 40.0 % Shield Thermal : 20.0 %
(Myrmidon)
MED-SLOTS : ~~~~~~~~~~~~ LSE II LSE II LSE II LSE II LSE II
LOW-SLOTS : ~~~~~~~~~~~~ SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II SPR II
RIG-SLOTS : ~~~~~~~~~~~~ CDFP I CDFP I CDFP I
SHIP'S ATTRIBUTES : ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Powergrid : 660.0 MW / 1468.75 MW CPU : 234.8 tf / 500.0 tf Capacitor (regen) : 3093.75 Energy (3632.07sec) Max Cap Regen : 2.09 per sec (approx.) Max Cap Needed : 0.0 per sec Velocity : 174.0 m/sec Signature : 565.675 m Shield HP (regen) : 21459.06 HP (93.73sec) Max Shield Regen : 572.37 per sec (approx.) Shield EM : 0.0 % Shield Explo : 60.0 % Shield Kinetic : 40.0 % Shield Thermal : 20.0 %
Conclusion:
The Myr will give me more tanking ability than a Domi, while not allowing me to carry as many drones or fit as much in the high slots.

Actually, you can't get as good of a passive shield tank out of a domi as you can a Myrmidon. If you go for max regen value on the domi, in comparison to the max shield regen myrmidon setup I showed in my link, you get the following:
Assumpptions are the same as my linked setups: All relevant skills at 4, +5% shield hp implant, -5% shield recharge rate implant
Highs: Whatever Mids: 5x LSE II Lows: 7x SPR II Rigs: 3x CDFP I
Gives you: Shield: 23428.44 hp Shield recharge time: 142.47s Avg. shield recharge: 164.5 hp/s Peak shield recharge: 411 hp/s
Resists would be the same as the similar myrmidon setup with EM/EX/KI/TH at 0/60/40/20.
The reason for the disparity is that the myrmidon has the shield recharge time of a cruiser, while having shield that approach those in size of a battleship. A base domi with no modules and no skills has shield of 5469 hp with 2500s recharge time = a base average recharge rate of 2.18hp/s. A base myrmidon with no modules and no skills has a shield of 3906hp and a recharge time of 1250 seconds = a base average recharge rate of 3.13hp/s (~43% better). They both have the same number of mid slots and the domi has just 1 more low slot, so it can fit 1 more SPR II, but that just isn't enough to overcome the faster recharge of the myrmidon.
That's why I'm using a myrmidon to do level 4 missions, and not a domi. :)

Hehe, you slipped in your own similar findings while I was posting the same :)
Yes, the domi does have more high slots, but for me, I prefer having the bigger passive shield tank. I have kids and even though I play at night, its not unusual for one of them to call out for me, or for my spouse to come in and want to chat, so I like knowing that I can basically go AFK during a mission and just let my drones clean up anything around me as long as I've already agro'd everything. I have to be a bit more careful now that I've been running level 4 missions, but I still feel very safe.
The other wonderful thing (IMO) about the passive shield tank is that it is, basically, lag proof. An armor tank relies on you turning the armor rep on (and potentially off in order to conserve cap, especially if you're running two armor reps)... a passive shield tank doesn't care if you lag out (or your ISP starts dropping packets, etc.).
Also, with regards to high slots... my normal setup when missioning is 1 gatling railgun to get agro from a distance, 1 NOS (so I can power my invuln field without having to use a PDS II in one of my lows), 2x salvager and then 2x tractors. So for me, extra high slots would only let me salvage/tractor a bit faster, which is no big deal for me and not (for me at least) worth the lesser tank.
Oh, almost forgot... the domi is of course a more expensive ship by about 20+M ISK, and it would require 1 extra SPR II (another 18M), so again, for me, its just not worth spending an extra 38M on the setup to get a lesser passive tank and just gain some high slots.
That's all just my opinion, of course, and as I've mentioned, its slanted towards missioning, not PvPing. Wred ----- If everyone had to have at least a room-temperature IQ in order to post in these forums, we'd all end up reading a hell of a lot less verbal-diarrhea. |

Yeah, the passive shield tanking is pretty awesome on this ship. I'm getting an average of 192.73 dps tankability on the same ship with passive armor tanking, so switching to shield gives me 4.76 times better tanking with no usage of cap, something even passive armor tanking still uses.

Totally passive? I'm getting 918 average as my max tankable dps without any cap use whatsoever.

ôTotally passive? I'm getting 918 average as my max tankable dps without any cap use whatsoever. ô Sort off. I can be totally passive mid and low slots but I use 1 gang assist module which is 5 cap/sec drain and 1 invul field as I donÆt like changing hardeners between missions. I guess I could swap gang assist to an alt and swap my PDS modules for more T2 shield relays.
The Eos is my main ship which is totally passive apart from gang assist and the none tanking modules.
