This reeks of awesomeness!! :D I love the work you've produced so far.
I'd love to create a model of the rifter and then make the technical drawing of it seen from different angles. I don't know how long it'll take me, or if I'll manage at all, but I'm definitely going to try. Any result I'm sufficiently content about I'll post here.
If you've got any more drawings of the size of the thing I'd love to get my hands on those. :) Keep up the good work. Maybe I'll be able to give you something more for your little project. ;)

If I had a 3d model of the thing, it would make the drawings do much easier!!! I worked up a*****pit today that I really liked. I haven't scanned anything in a while, but I plan on it soon. Just to let ya'll know, I'm still working on it :)

Have you considered using Air Transport Association codes, or something similar, for your technical organization?

everyone has a 3d model of the thing, you can get them out of tri exporter. admittedly it is a little low on polygons.

Amazing work. This just brings to life the huge scale of the equipment in EVE.
Anyone feel like starting on the deck plans and maintenance manual for a Naglfar?

That would have been nice if I could, but since CATIA won't accept any of the formats tri-exporter outputs I'm still at square one. Besides, modelling it from scratch at 1:1 scale is half the fun. ;)
It would have been excellent to have access to the measures used by the devs for the rifter, but I reckon I've got a better shot at the lottery jackpot than getting hold of those. :P

Isn't there a way to get the exported 3D model into autocad ? You'd have all the measures you need then to make your own.

Yeah but this is a Minmatar ship we're talking about. :) Your alphabetic help index will probably end up looking like this:
D
Duct Tape; see: 1.2.2 Hull components 1.2.3 Armor plating 1.3.1 Airlock seals 1.7.7 The tractor beam 1.7.8 Cargo management 3.2 Onboard first-aid 3.2.1 Emergency rations 8.1 Recomended repair adhesives
but that just goes for minmatar ships in general =/, super glue, gaffer tape and blue tack, the rifter is the only one that they didn't use duct tape for, probably cos the minmatar slaves kept stealing screws and using them for the rifter design xD

I would like to help, but I don't have time unfortunately. However, for your tech drawings have you thought of drawing the whole thing in a program like AutoCAD. You can then (using the layers system) use little bits, showing only what you want for each diagram.
I do realize that to draw a full technical drawing of an imaginary ship full size in model space would be a bit time consuming though

Unfortunately (or perhaps it is better for this project) the image of the Rifter isn't very good. Dunno if these numbers are still what the Devs use when they talk about having us walk around stations. Thanks to Frightspear for having a bookmark to the images!
Actually that one would fit better for a scifi game like eve.

Heh-- yeah. That's sort of the point, though. I sort of figured that a Caldari would look like the "newer" (or like a Sony manual), while the Minnies have that desperately industrial factor to them. I figured that the US Army style FM's would perfectly fit that, since they are geared towards massive quantities being produced for very little money.
In this case, I take a high res drawing or a high quality drawing and completely tear it up or over ink it. I'd love to use autocad, but it wouldn't lend me the quality (or lack there of) I am looking for. There is a particular model I use to draw from, but decided to go old school and draft everything from that for use with the manual.

I just had this idea that a sony-like user manual would be too Caldari...
If you ever decide to do a manual for a Caldari ship, I'll be happy to provide instructions in Japanese and the Engrish translation.
For warfare of electrons, to turn into value things consume Bird of Black?
For electronic warfare, use the Blackbird = 電子戦争の場合、クロドリを使用しなさい = In case of electronic warfare, use クロドリ.
Apply some minor obsfucation:
"For the purposing of electrons fight, please be using black of colour bird."
I could go a little further and randomly swap the l's and r's around, but I think I'd get complaints. That Engrish enough for you?

Been busy lately- Also tanked about 500 million ingame recently. Who flies their drone into a smartbomb? Oh yeah, a jerk does. ;) hint hint if anyone feels sympathetic...
Anyway:
I'm still working on the manual though. I'm able to devote a few hours on Saturdays, so it's still going on. I've got some stuff I should upload...

Here's hoping this project hasn't kicked it yet - I'd really love to see something tangible come out of the previews I've seen so far.
For a few years I worked on a decomissioned Tench-class submarine, and we found a ton of manuals in storage in her - much like this one. In fact, I think I read this exact manual at some point. Probably a bit larger and more comprehensive that you're likely to get, but it might be a good place to get ideas as to layout and the kinds of illustrations they used. Hell, a few of those cutaways might just need a bit of tweaking to fit right into your manual
I'd contribute art, but my art skills are less than crap. If inspiration strikes I might write a few passages regarding ships systems and soforth, that's the kind of BS I can make up in my sleep.

You really have something awesome going on there Doctor. The reason why most of us enjoy Eve so much is the fact that we love machines and for the PvP crowd, war machines.
Doing a manual like that feeds this fetish of ours and it enables us to get right down into ships we fly, all naked and spread out.
I bet if CCP ever does a cross section art book of the ships we all fly or official manuals, they will really rake in alot of cash!
Keep up the very good work and here is to hoping we can get a preview of your work soon.
Cheers!
