o7 Capsuleers,
I'm looking for a relatively low-input, passive form of ISK generation to ease the financial pressure of my primary pursuits - PvP and such. I also like the idea of slowly building up my ISK for a larger investment such as a wormhole-space POS for my own base of operations. Ultimately, it would be cool to be able to earn enough to PLEX a second account or train an alt simultaneously.
Regardless, I wanted to openly enquire as to the many forms of passive ISK-generation which could bolster my endeavors. I've heard PI is a good one, and have been reading up on the various setups although I'd be very grateful for a breakdown of anyone whose managed it successfully!
This being said, any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

PI is a good one especially with all of the citadels and ECs that are/will be built. You just have to train yourself and the 2 alts on your account in some basic skills to achieve this.
EvE uni covers it all fairly well with http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Planetary_Industry http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Planetary_Interaction http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Planetary_Commodities
The income is good and so is the demand, even Tier 2 and 3 commodities.
But the basic skills are Gallante Industrial 1 (so you can fly a Epithal) Command Center Upgrades (preferably 5) Interplanetary Consolidation 4 allowing 5 planets Planetology 4 and advanced planetology 3 allowing for more resources Remote sensing 3 so you dont have to be that near the planet to do the daily installs to increase production trade 4 and Customs Code Expertise 4 to cut down the taxs you pay.

Another great passive activity is researching BPO's. You might not even know this but you probably got a few slots available for research. Literally everything in the game has a BPO and you could take something like a Vexor BPO and get 10:20 research on it and flip it on contracts for a sweet profit. Either sell the BPO outright, or print BPC's with it.
PI is also fantastic.

PI is a great way to earn passive income. However it is only really profitable in null sec. And there is an initial investment to get started. Setting up one production planet is about 10-12m ISK, (you need to do that 4x) and the factory planet is probably 60m Isk.
Once set up though, doing something like microfiber shielding can generate 200M ISO a week. That is gross, not counting transfer tax fees etc to transfer materials. Or ship losses... |

You don't necessarily have to come up with your own P1's or extraction worlds to make money at PI. This is a super handy website you can toggle the taxes and figure out what makes a profit right now. (It's all highly volatile)
https://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/pi/
I did this for a while and if my friend I made with the JF couldn't make a run for me, I could do a trip with an Epithal daily to Jita for my materials. I was rubbing 1 isk together and making 3 isk at the end but this was a time where all the prices were very wonky with Citadel expansion coming.
Factory World examples:
P1 to P2
P1 to P3 this is what one of my worlds looks like
If you can figure out PI it's acutally pretty fun

If you are in highsec, I would highly discourage you from doing Planetary Interaction EXCEPT if you have your own POCO. The returns from highsec planets are very poor and most of the POCO tax rates you see are crazy. If you see any of them below 15%, jump on it because most are 20-30%. The higher the tax rate, the more it cuts into your measly profit margin.
I do BPO research but I don't have access to the good ones so the ones I sell don't profit that much. It is something to keep my time besides mission running.
Good luck to you though, OP.

If you're not in a big nullsec corp go to Providence - be nice and don't get on their kill list and you can PI to your heart's content without having the obligations of a big corp. PI is the best way to earn passive income if you are in null. If you are in highsec then you want to do trading, buy low sell high. |

Definitely PI, the effort for a 5 planet farm in nullsec is very reasonable. I'm running 1d22h cycles, which means 10min effort to reset the extractors every two days. The storage can hold a bit more than a week of stuff. On weekends I'm onsite for about an hour to export/import stuff and looking for a suitable wormhole to get out the P2.
Other passive income options are regional trade and production. You need to find slow, but high profit goods with reasonable competition. For the trade I update my sell orders roughly once a week (or when I'm anyway passing by the regions). Same for production, a high volume small margin good let you burn out quickly imo. Today I'm starting production not before I can make a 100% profit. This usually rakes in some billions over a week or two before the price normalize again.
BPC business is one I started to look at, with a couple of BPOs currently in "training".
My general recommendation is to combine different sources, to generate a steady income with minimal effort.

Just scored a quarter of a bill on my Providence PI alt selling high tech parts from a weeks worth of work. The key is to either sell mid range materials or focus on one high tech item and get very good at it. Make sure the region you set up in has all the planets you need to do the job. You dont wanna go trekking across 12 systems everytime you need silicon for instance.
Im not even very good or dedicated to my PI alt so you should do a lot better if you're focused and careful. |

o7,
Thank you for all your suggestions. I've read the responses and feel PI might be the way forward - perhaps looking into BPO research and BPC printing once my alt has the skills. Next step is to decide on a suitable PI setup. My corp lives in a wormhole and most of the inhabitants undertake PI on a regular basis, I might have to start there.
To be cheeky, can anyone suggest a basic setup - perhaps one that has worked in your experience - to begin with. I will most likely be carrying this out in a C2-3 hole or a convenient low/ high-sec system. I'm aware now that it rather depends on the planets you have available, but an example that works would be good to see.
Thanks again for all your help, I'm really grateful for the support.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXvw9EtWPGw is the basics
But as far as efficiency you want to start with searching the markets for what is selling best. I wanted to do advanced items just for the challenge, but I did go out of my way to choose the one selling for the most. Keep in mind generally most people seem to think that high tech end-PI items really are not worth making, as there seems to be a consensus that there is a loss that occurs when late stage materials (camera drones, nuclear reactors) are transformed into a final stage item (self harmonizing power core, etc)
I use http://alysii.com/eve/pi/ religiously
I keep a list of all my planets in my notepad for reference, it looks like this:
Planet 24124 (Plasma) Produces: Plasma (reprocess), Toxic Metal (dest Ice) Feed it: Rocket Fuel (from Barren), Electrolytes (From Gas)
That way I have an easy chart to see both what a planet is making, what planet the material should go to next, and what materials just stay on the planet in order to be processed in a factory further. The list gets quite long.
You always want an extractor to go to a storage unit before sending to factory, because otherwise the extra that the factory cannot keep up with gets lost!
Extractor---->Storage---->factory---->storage----->another factory (if necessary) and so on until you get back to final storage and then LAUNCHPAD WOOoooo
Remember if you have to choose between two types of planets, be careful to choose the planet that produces the MOST materials you need. So like if you need heavy AND base metals, go with a Plasma planet that produces both, not an Ice planet and a Gas planet separately which only can hope for one of the two each. One exception to this is if you are limited on planets in the area and want to go with a planet that is closer for safety reasons.
PI seems to me to always be easiest when one works backwards. Starting at the factory with your final product, work backwards until you find a missing ingredient, then track that ingredient down until you get to the ingredient you can fill an order for.
People seem to hate PI but also guard their secrets to PI jealously so youll mostly have to wing it. It all starts with analyzing the markets.

You will need to do a lot of research before you start anything. The research consists of 3 things:
1. What you want to produce (highest profit available)
2. Where the planets/systems are that can produce those items and aren't 35 jumps from a hub and
3. How many of the planets you need are in one system or within 1-2 jumps. The part that slows PI down is jumping into a busy system and having to wait for everyone to clear. With all my planets within two jumps, I can make all my raw material pickups within 15-20 minutes. Having planets spread out 4-7 jumps away from the factory planet just makes it a huge chore picking up materials. Plus, if a system gets busy...then you have to wait for things to cool down or log off and come back later which, for me, slows everything down. I like to be done with my PI quickly and move on to my main toon.
Another note. Before you fire up your planet factory, run the other planets for about 10-14 days. This will give you a good supply of raw materials. Sometimes it is hard to get equal production of both materials and you can run low of one which screws up the revenue stream. With a large surplus, hopefully, that won't happen.
