The Alphas are coming!!! With that in mind I hope to help infuse some new blood into Eve's fantastic roleplaying community. I mentioned in Imperial OOC that the Amarr chatroom had been a sad constipated panda for quite a few months, to which Aldrith Shutaq yelled at me "NO U" and I also regrettably yelled back at him. The poor man hasn't been the same since they had to surgically remove one of his hairs because he used too much product.
Roleplaying is obscure in Eve online, but for the roleplaying afficianado, you will be pleased to learn that this small community is great. Roleplayers in Eve are supportive, tight-knit and welcoming to outsiders. If you are a seasoned roleplayer you may want to jump right in to the two main roleplaying chat rooms:
The Summit
and
Intergalactic Summit
Both of these have their fans. The Summit is player run, while Intergalactic Summit is run by CCP. I have a favorite character (not mine) who plays in Intergalactic Summit so I mainly frequent the IS with the limited amount of time I have to roleplay, and I am just getting back into it after a long period of disinterest.
There are accompanying rooms for out-of-character discussions, respectively OOC and Out of Character (The official CCP room).
There is also the official In-character RP forum, Intergalactic Summit! Some players do all of their roleplaying there.
Finally there are specialty rooms for the various factions.
For a full list of all of the channels in Eve visit Backstage OOC as there is one there.
One channel that is almost always active day and night is Imperial OOC, where all are welcome, but Imperial Congregation is Amarr loyalists only, in character, beware. :)
Backstage is the biggest forum to talk roleplay outside of Eve Forums.
If you are NEW to roleplay then you should read the UniWiki guide to Role-Playing by the same name.
To make your character do something type "/me insert action here" Like so:
/me smiles slightly.
*The Golden Serpent smiles slightly.
I also have a coupla tips:
1. You are not your characters. One will rarely believe or agree with any of the absurd or futuristic things their character can and will say and do. 2. One character doesn't know another character just because it is an alt. However you can do funny things like play a couple of relatives or something and make them fight. 3. Roleplay what you like, but don't ever think you have to agree with what your character thinks. Good roleplayers will never judge you the person by your character's beliefs. 4. For that matter even if you are new to roleplay, most advanced roleplayers will forgive many mistakes. Roleplaying is very hard to do well, and the longer you do it the more you understand how hard it is. It's not necessary to correct spelling (we can figure it out if you're missing a letter) and it's not necessary to 'just run with it" if you make a mistake. IF you say something completely wrong you can do a "takeback" for example, you thought it was part of lore but it turns out it wasn't. I don't know of any roleplayer who wouldn't forgive you for such a mistake. 5. I know it's hard but try not to mix up OOC with IC stuff. This can be hard, but sometimes it will be necessary (as self regulating gamemasters) to share major spoilers about your character (which can be "discovered" in Galnet or by hackers) to avoid kinks in the story, or you might want to let people know you are meeting someone in secret to give people a heads up there's interesting things going on in the background to lubricate the community to rally around a storyline. I've never seen any storylines that can completely avoid OOC talk and it's the same in LARP and tabletop gaming. Try to tell as few people as you can. And trust people. Most roleplayers are very good at keeping a secret believe it or not. 6. I try not to hang out in OOC channels too much. I want to learn more, but I don't want spoilers to my favorite show anymore than I want spoilers to my favorite characters. Beware you may either become addicted to OOC information and socializing or it may ruin your RP experience as it does for me. Occasionally it really adds a lot to my friendships and my roleplaying experience so it's a very mixed bag. You'll have to figure out what works for you, but try not to automatically label one way as good and the other as bad. 7. Roleplayers tend to value roleplaying above all other activities in Eve, but don't assume that conventional RP channels are the only place to find it. There's a lot of lite roleplaying to be had amongst PVPers especially in Faction Warfare. It's okay to roleplay everywhere in the game, drawing other non roleplayers into the fun. But try to drop "clues" that you are roleplaying for them, like making your character do things which cannot be mistaken for really being butthurt about the Minmatar "scum".
Example: (using /me) The Golden Serpent continues gibbering on and on in a high pitched nervous voice over comms, quoting morbid bits of Amarrian scripture.
This puts people who arn't used to roleplaying at ease that I am not really a crazy bigot IRL, it's just that my character is really neurotic.
Roleplaying with non-roleplayers is a great way to practice your roleplay if you are rusty. It's less intimidating that dealing directly with roleplayers who are very sophisticated in their roleplaying careers. This is mostly not something you need to worry about at all, like I said before the longer you roleplay the more you realize how hard it is and the more we want to see new roleplayers exploring the wonderful world of roleplaying.
Finally enjoy roleplaying and don't pay attention to hecklers or those with roleplaying phobia. Roleplaying is improv theatre, nothing less and nothing more. It helps relieve stress, ignites creativity and builds friendships that can last a lifetime.

Well that's true but that is the icing on the cake that is this game isn't it ^_^
And I don't know any really great PVPers who don't add an artistic flourish to their gaming and kills through some lite roleplay, whether it's an Alliance slogan/action, a silly meme or a polite "gf" Anyone who doesn't take the time to add some artistry or civilized good natured social interaction to the PVP is just a slob as far as I'm concerned.
One of the funniest times I was roleplaying with someone in the IS very congenially, both having this nice pleasant discussion and he showed up in a battle in his ship while he was talking to me. I said "Hey!" in local and he proceeded to blow me up, not noticing who he was targetting. Oh yes well my character noticed It was predictably very funny and tragic.

As a member of the most active in-game RP community and also one of the most successful alliances in the game I am looking forward to welcome a lot of new players to CODE. or the New Order at large.
Other than the forum restricted "RP community" who claim the label for themselves we have a different approach to the topic and do not limit ourselves to the lore and some communication channels which are separate from the game.
So if you want to play a space police officer who fights for the unanimously elected Supreme Protector James 315 and enforces the New Halaima Code of Conduct in our territory (Highsec) with actual ingame assets, we welcome you to join our ranks.
The RP experience is so much more intense if actual internet spaceships are involved.

Thanks for the guide and advice, it's very nice.
Those forums and roleplay resources that you mention, can you make those into links? [ url = http-address ] This is a link. [ / url ] Would be easier for newcomers to click and reach those resources from your guide.
And, as CODE is trying to point out, albeit rudely, roleplay in EVE involves quite a bit of action, not just chatting.
As an example from a while ago, Curatores Veritatis Alliance (CVA) are Amarr loyalists, and Ushra'khan (alliance) were anti-slavery Minmatar, with actual wars happening between them, as well as CCP-assisted roleplay arcs related to Vitoc and a possible cure being found and distributed. More currently, we've had a couple Amarr succession trials that actually took place and involved combat to determine the winner, with CCP following through and changing the in-game news and events to support this roleplay.
So because of EVE's PVP nature, a lot of the roleplay goes from chatting to duels, wars, or whatever in-space action, relatively quickly.
EDIT:
You're providing a guide, Ima Wreckyou is trying to recruit.
Move this guide to the Newbie Q/A forum, where it can be stickied as a guide, and where the forum rules prevent recruitment posts and will protect you against the CODE replies that you're getting here. |

I'm not a miner, never have been, and I have never had any contact with CODE in the game, ever. Yet I had to call the police about one of your members within the last 24 hours and your members show up in this unrelated thread. This is definately an out of game incident. Does that sound like something funny or something related to roleplaying (the topic of this thread) to you? Normally a corp member would be interested in messaging such a person, asking "Hey I heard something is wrong, what is going on, what happened, who did it?" Seems like the stuff I am hearing about your organization is completely not only completely true it is indicative of a much larger sickness relating to Eve's attitudes towards women, anyone different, roleplayers and anyone else who wants to play game they way they want to.

So you think everything that happens in Eve and online and on these forums is not "real" and jump to the conclusion I need to "calm down" because I called the police "about wardeccing".
Someone is out of touch with reality here and it's certainly not me. My characters story is fiction, but that's about it. I believe I am talking to real people and my actions online have real consequences. I really wonder what you think "wardeccing" actually is. Is that "CODE" for something? Welcome to EvE, a dark, dystopian, vision of the future based on the assumption that in the end humanity will find a way to immortalize itself with technology so that hatred, greed, and war can cause chaos forever across the stars. EvE is mean. You and I don't have to be, but that is the challenge we both accepted when we logged in.
The vast majority of players here are genuinely good people outside of the game. Many Role Play the villain, because it's fun and is a necessary part of the content creation equation that we all rely on.
There are most definately some scumbaggy creepers here just like in any other game. They can be called out or you can direct mods towards them or what have you. Our GMs, ISDs, Devs, etc. are actually very good at keeping the game "civil." Just stop making such sweeping statements about "EvE's much larger sickness."
That's annoying.

No, just a regular miner, the kind who thinks that a PvP game is a great place to go AFK in a poorly defended barge. They are well known for their tears, which is why I made the assumption. Check out minerbumping.com some time. I don't know or care what your real life sex is, but the more you claim you're a female the more doubtful it becomes.
I need you to go ahead and stop with the prejudice against minorities. The only thing that's certain is that you are noncompliant and in dire need of the Code.

No, that's not a reference to gender.
It's a reference to how someone thinks. Highsec miner in this usage is referring to a Carebears. Someone who doesn't take responsibility for their gaming experience, and either expects CCP to keep them safe or projects judgements about people IRL because of the way they play the game (including the forum, which is used by many as part of the meta game).
Nothing at all sexist in it. They treat everyone the same.
