Hello.
I've watched the documentary about Serenity, and I'm so curious to feel their version of New Eden.
I'd like to understand how to log into the Chinese server, with my current character? (like RnK member did)
If anyone can help with that. Thank you! |

The Chinese state sees too much contact with foreigners as corrosive to values and i'm inclined to agree. Why you would want access to a smaller population version of eve i don't know, unless it's just a silly wanting of that-which-you-are-not-allowed. You have nothing to offer the people there.

Tbh purely because it's an alternate version of something we're all heavily involved in would be enough reason for any one of us to want to go check it out. Like an alternate ending :P

I see it as worse in every aspect.
Less people, everyone speaks and writes chinese. There are ISK prices thru the roof.
Not playable at all for me. I think chinese people with chinese values can play it because of the way chinese internet works. =ƒÖê=ƒÖë=ƒÖè

I think it's true that they only use Chinese on Chinese server. So if you can't read Chinese, don't try it. And also there's a totally different play style, because the company run the Chinese server turns a blind eye to using macros, so there're many bots mining, ratting, modifying market orders or even performing pvp fleet fights. RMT is also acceptable there. I know a guy purchased 2 titan pilots with 18000 CNY (Chinese currency, about 2600 USD). (and somemody else knew about the trade detail and blew up that 2 titans at the trade site Plex is 50 CNY (7.5 USD) there, cheaper. One more thing, there're far more trollers among Chinese than among westerns, and that's why I don't play there (pure Chinese myself). |

Can you define what you mean by "trollers" please?

it can only be done from a Chinese IP address and via the Chinese website with a Chinese ID. That being said, if you do access it and you are not in the geo-political boundary of China, you may be found in violation of the EULA/TOS.

So, would playing in the chinese servers while in Tibet be a violation, or not? |

Fair enough. It's a valid question, though. Without getting into politics - can one play on Serenity from Tibet without violating the TOS our EULA? |

When I join an adventure on Serenity I'm not playing with my TQ accounts; the databases are separate. There is also no working English Client, which means that you'd need to either speak Chinese or know someone there to help you (I don't speak Chinese, so it's the latter for me).
If you are simply curious about the kind of campaigns fought on Serenity, I do occasional write-ups such as The Letter War. It's interesting to see what changes when Eve is transposed to the East, and what remains the same (as the saying goes, War Never Changes).
You might also be interested in Hilmar's presentation at Fanfest about our video to do with the meta interplay between the servers. The original video is here.

This is an interesting aspect, since we in the West tend to think of Chinese internet as a very regulated zone. While that's true to an extent, the reality is a little more complex: it's also very much the Wild Wild East.
Eve is the sandbox MMO most associated with the underbelly of the internet. It's probably no accident that in the recent Silk Road trials a screenshot showed Eve installed on DPR's laptop.
It's important to remember that identity is best established in the most free environment. Trolling, as you call it, is probably not something you associate that much with Rooks and Kings (although this could be because you don't know John Caffeine personally) - and yet its important to be surrounded by the opportunity to do something even if you don't. An action only has meaning if you had the opportunity to do the opposite. Besides, the Devil is a gentleman.
Serenity definitely has a more ruthless edge than people expect, especially in the high-end metagame.
The Serenity group I tend to write about and who have been featured a little in videos, such as MB, Fulcrum, XianXian, etc., certainly have forged their own identity and that's in part thanks to their exploits unfolding in a very anarchic sandbox.

No VPN is required to access Serenity, which is ironic since VPNs/hardware ids are used extensively in the spying meta of Eve. I suppose it's another example of Eve's meta excess outdoing real life intrigue. However, as you say, making accounts there is complex and certainly requires a good understanding of Chinese language; as a non-speaker I'm able to join the action now and then only by the grace of others.

Indeed, although I think TQ will always be home for TQ players, it's interesting to learn of what changes and what remains the same.
Serenity certainly has a culture in the metagame that places extreme emphasis on decisive, apex fleet combat. Although the sever population is smaller, the big battles are as grand or larger. I was reminded of this a few weeks ago when I joined a battle where a few hundred dreadnoughts died (mostly the enemy's). Unfortunately the dastardly scoundrels primed me early on, although this allows me to bring you some extrazoom 5k screens (you can use your mousewheel to zoom around the battlefield).

Wow! Thank you for all the replies, specially Lord Maldoror I really appreciate all the information. Yes I see now that trying to log into Serenity is not a simple thing, and I'm not motivated enough to go through all that :) But interesting to know about whats going on there indeed. <3 |
