I used to play EVE with 2-3 accounts, starting in 2009. Haven't played for a few years, but subscribed one account three weeks ago. Here are a few take-away's:
1) Started a new character just before Ascension - bad move. 2) Started a new Minmatar (Alpha) character just after Ascension. Split weapon systems still sucks. 3) Started a new Gallente (Alpha) character -> Hulkageddon reviewed thanks to the folks from CODE. and their completion in Crime & Punishment.
Comments: - The New Player Experience (NPE) is awesome - I really liked that. It gives a taste of what might come for new capsuleers - The missions from Career agents are seriously lame. They used to be decent, for example, character 1) above got the Social skill-book. No such reward for character 2) - How is he/she going to figure out that you need Connections @ lvl 2 to access LVL 2 missions? (without having to grind lvl 1 missions). - Instructions on Optimal and Fall-off are non-exisitent - Reward for being an outstanding recruit: a Mining Frigate and a Blueprint :-) (lining them up to fail as it's cheaper to buy) - You need to give them basic stuff in the Career Missions and teach them how to use it - STOP pointing them towards Factional Warfare - point them in the direction of Sister Alitura - please
Thank you - great to see EVE again, i'll probably subscribe one more account.
PS: CODE. is doing a good job keeping high-sec interesting. Currently training one Agent to act in the interest of The Code. |

I like to gank helpless mining barges. Thanks code for helping me feel better about myself since I was unable to drink Kool-Aid when I was younger. Meow
Glad to have another likeminded individual to join EVE! Welcome back!

Thank you.
Ganking poorly tanked miners is a favour - they need to learn.

So this is the power of alpha clones? AInt it something. I propose that all carebears should be limited to alpha clones so that we can have a decent General Discussion for once.

Why? The ones we have taken in in our fw corp, seems to be having a blast. In FW they are quite wanted, so why not point them there if they have fun? And in regards to Sister Alitura.... I don't agree. Why give people the illusion that EVE offers mainly a PVE experience(through the story arc), when PVP has the better gameplay(IMO) and the PVE in my opinion lakcs quite a lot in comparrison to other games out there. If I were them i would also try to herd people into PVP activities, as they do that moderately good, instead of getting a lot of disgruntled/dissapointed PVE'ers quitting the game again soon. CCP themselves also see this as PVP game, so it makes sense in that context. And it is all about the retention with the alpha clones.

Good point, but for most new capsuleers Factional Warfare is not the next step after doing "Advanced Military". |

No no no you guys got it all wrong, new players inevitably shoot npcs. Sleepers have been buffed but that's not what i'm getting at.
In PVP d-scan is a must tool. New npc mining fleets have compositions of ships setup to proper kill you solo, so that newbie may just realize they can do what the NPC's can do, and it might just work better if they find people to do it with.
Being sapient can drive us mad.

Really, the best step no matter at which point in your Eve carreer is to get involved with the community to play with people, or against them. While the epic arc can be a nice boost for newbies, especially if they *want* (those players exist) to get into the missions treadmill (make money to buy a bigger ship to make more money to buy a bigger ship to make even more money ...), it's still a 52 part quest to kill 50 nasty goblins, collect 25 elf ear necklaces and bring them to Chieftain Alitura, and gets boring rather quickly if you don't know what you are doing it for. It lacks the entertainment of a good story driven single player game, but it also is not a very good multiplayer experience either, since if you are running it with a wingman, you'd either have to do everything twice or have the other player just follow you around without ever talking to the characters involved.
They can still grind missions in FW if they so desire, but the chance to get involved into something bigger than a half-decent at best single player campaign is much higher there. |

I'm tainted by my own experience. A pilot from Null-sec helped me complete the last mission in Alitura's Epic Arc. Recruited me to his corp and moved my stuff to their base in null-sec. I was one month old when my tackler and my EWAR bird helped defend 9-UY. It was epic, fun and a good introduction to EVE.
Maybe new pilots should be given options? e.g. 1) FW 2) Null-sec 3) Pirating 4) HS missions ie Alitura to start (and a reference to Agent Finder) 5) Industry/mining |

I am all for options. I think this is a good idea.

I am all for options. I think this is a good idea. To be fair, they already do have these options. There is nothing forcing them to go to Faction Warfare if they would prefer to do other things as is appropriate in a sandbox game.
I think though, the strategy to guide new players who don't have a real clue of what they want to do to a part of the game where they can interact with other players and join immediately into some player-driven content is not a bad one. This reduces the likelihood they will mine or mission alone for a week or two in an empty highsec system before getting bored and quitting the game.
Still, perhaps phase 2 of the new NPE that CCP Ghost and friends are still working on will have some better developed scripted content for giving new players a taste of all aspects of the game. There are indeed some players that would find a more industrial career more engaging and likely to keep them in the game and they should be given a taste of that, or better yet, guided to other players who share similar interests.
