Hello, I just returned to EVE after a long hiatus and I started doing some missions to get used to things again and I am on Portal to War 2 of 5 and I am getting my rear kicked.
I have a Cyclone for my ship but I do not have the skills to get tech two weapons and invuln shields and such like I have seen on some setup suggestions. My skills are a bit mixed I have some dedicated to mining as the last corp I was with wanted me to have them and I think I am only at about 800k total. Am I best waiting till my skills are better and I can equip my ship better or am I missing something?
Or if anyone has advice on Portal to War the only hint for the mission I could find was on that wikki site and all it said was to do it fast, ha! The very first ships kick the crap out of me, hehe.
Any advice is appreciated, thank you. ... |

I would say at least 6M in navigation, gunnery, electronics, engineering. EW skills if you are up for them. --- So I flame and troll when the occasion calls for it. So what are you gonna do about it? |

um.. lol
Minimum requirements: a battlecruiser and some form of basic tank. 2 million SP will easily do it, if you place the skillpoints carefully :)
I'm a corp thief. And remember, I only do it because I like your robot. |

Any BC would be able to do lv3 mission with the right t1 fitting. it may be slower then what other are doing it but you can do it, make sure to check out what the rats will be using aginst you and what there weakest damage is and it will speed the clearing time and add to your survivale chance. Once you get better skills you can also do them in cruisers. From my own expriance i did lv3 missions with ferox and with about 600k SP in combat related skills(i.e. not learning/trader/industrial).
If i post something smart it represent my corp and alliance all other posts are my feeling/ideas only and do not represnt the rest |

Thanks for the replies, while I have not attempted Portal to War again I have done a couple other combat ones and completed them although slowly, I definately need to get some SP's for tanking then work some more on my gunnery. So far it has not been profitable as I lost one ship, thank god I remembered insurance, but I also blow money if I don't pay attention and have to repair my structure.
Ah well live and learn. Back to level twos to earn some coin back and wait till my points are a little better flushed out ... |

Wow... I can't believe how sad most of these replies are. If you need 6 million, 3 millions or even 2 million SP to do level 3 missions then you are doing something very wrong imo. I'm talking non-learning SP's of course.
I had done every one of the hardest level 3's before I had 750k SP. I did this in a ferox and then I redid them all again with 900k SP or so in a Raven. Both were active tank. Now I wouldn't say I did them ultra-efficiently... but I did them without too much risk of death. By the time I had 1.5 mil SP I did them all much easier and basically had no trouble pulling in 5-6+ million isk per hour. By 2.5 mill I had my drone skills up and had even spent a lot of time on learning, so this is 2.5 mil WITH learning skills (tho not to 5/4 yet, 5/3 I think at this point). At 2.5 I was doing the missions very quickly... I'd say at about 80-85% of the speed I do them now that I have 17 mil SP. I can now do level 4's, but level 3's really can only be done so quickly and you don't need many SP's to do them at that speed really.
If I could have flown a drake when I was doing level 3's initially I would have required even less than I had to do them quickly. The drake is easy mode for level 3's... you shouldn't even need 1 mil SP to do them all easily, even if you arn't the best mission runner.

I have even done some lvl 3`s with my Thorax while was saving for Dominix. Just need right type of range/setup. Any BC will do it. ---

The best advice I can give you is to try them with an experienced friend first. There's no realistic SP limit you can put on missions (because it's meaningless, most of the skill is in setup and piloting) so I won't try, but you're always ready to give them a shot.
I'll give you my old Cyclone setup (it's an excellent L3 ship) to get you started in T1 form:
5x 720mm Howitzer Artillery I (take a set of different ammos for range) 2x Heavy Missile Launcher I 1x Small Tractor Beam I
1x Medium Shield Booster I 2x (Specific) Field I (active shield hardener) 1x Shield Boost Amplifier I 1x Stasis Webifier I
3x Gyrostabilizer I 1x Damage Control I
3x Vespa I 2x Hobgoblin I
Fit shield hardeners to match the particular mission you're flying (using the damage stats from eveinfo.com). The shield booster should be the best named one you can afford and your Battlecruisers skill will hugely boost your tank as you level it. All these mods can be upgraded to named items to improve the ship further.
That setup has lots of range so use it. Be particularly careful with missions that aren't on eveinfo.com - they're newer, wave-based ones. Those can be very hard on a tank if you don't know the correct order in which to kill the enemies. Hell, my highly skilled Prophecy had an entertaining time on my first chaotic run through Blockade.
I'll finish by reiterating what I started with. Run missions with an experienced friend - you'll learn a lot and have much more fun at the same time.
Edit: Oh, and forgot one important point. Don't underestimate drones! As you train up their skills you'll be amazed what those little critters can do. My once crappy Vespas now tear through the toughest interceptors at a scary rate, leaving my guns to focus on the heavy hitters. When I'm bored I can even get them to eat battlecruisers all by themselves!

I could do lvl 3's with 1.3mil SP in my drake, with 500k of those SP being in gunnery, which I don't use.

1.2 years ago i used to do spy stash, black market hub, with a 6 day old caracal pilot, few ranged attacks, a few warp outs, was all good. tbh riding a ship to peices is funner then clicking activate->repeat on my pithx XL 2x PithX amps FG crystal set 3 pithx hards while spittin torps, which is what I do these days..
In the end this just proves caldari is the king of pve.

Actual Fitting: 6x650er, 2xHeavy Missile 1xCap Rech, 1xTracking Comp, 1xSensor Boost, 1x AB 1xCap Relay, 2 active Hardener, 1xMed Repper, 2xGyro Rigs: 2 Hardener, 1 Nano Pump
I fly mostly Gurista, so i only need 2 types of Hardener. With a little Skills, the Repper AND the AB could work all the time. But you can change come of the Mids to Cap Rech.

Caldari are definitely kings of PvE. Did my first solo L3, (blockade), with 53k sp in missiles, 90k sp in shields, just enough spaceship command to fly a Drake. And 3 drones, because that's all I could launch.
Took 4 hours, but it only got easier from there.
Cyclone is definitely not a pile of poo, but you need missile, gun, navigation, shield, engineering, and electronics skills to fly it. An active tank is far harder to pull off than a passive one for a newbie. I'd say 300k non-learning skills to do all L3s solo in a Drake, 1M for a Myrm jock, 1.5M for a cyclone and 2-3M for anything Amarr.
5M combat SP is the point when you clear L3s in just about any race's ship while asleep.
Note that this assumes t2 and named gear, not the cheapest T1 crap you can get you hands on.
800k sp is what brand new characters start with. If a lot of that is mining focused I'm pretty sure you won't be able to complete many L3s with that.
