right, i was looking at my missiles today and i relised... how amazingling weak they are.
i am currently fitting this:
6 cruise II 2 nos
20km scrammer 2 invuln II 1 em hard II 1 xl booster 1 electrochem
2 pds II 1 pdu II 1 dcu II 1 bcu II
okay now i have listed my fittings, i want to point out that it does lack in some areas.. though it hasnt died yet. Now the problem is that i have 5 mil sp in missiles max rof skills (cruise spec4) and all the other bits and bobs to 4-5.. and i relised that my 6 launchers have a 9 second rate of fire.. and do 400 damage.. ish each.
now i know what you are all thinking "well you can hit any target at any range and do the same damage" well.. fact is that the raven is lacking some serious firepower.. after considering torps are not effected by skills and that they only hit battleships with power (bar-javlins) i was thinking to myself.. i only have 6 launchers!.
so i have 6 launchers with 9 second rof and 400ish damage base.
6 launchers isn't much really.. 6 launchers is like.. 2400 damage each volly against 0 resists every 9 seconds, now considering the fact that people have 30-40% resists already that removes... 650ish damage already meaning i hit for 1750 damage every 9 seconds.. then you consider the fact that a ship has a tank which will boost it by 30% each resist atleast.. so thats 60-70% removed... so that means.. im hitting 650 damage in 1 volly.
so.. :
70% resists i hit 650 damage every 9 seconds.
now consider the fact that i either remove 20% of the damage to use javlin cruise or use average and hit smaller targets than 160 size.
so against 70% resists on anything smaller than a battlecruiser im hitting about 500 damage.. every 9 seconds.
so lets make that more simple for everyone:
base dps = 266dps. 500 / 9 = 55dps. 650 / 9 = 72dps.
so my battleship against hardly huge resists is doing 55 dps against anything smaller than a battlecruiser or 72dps against anything larger.
now considering the large repairer does 800 per rep every 9 seconds.. and i do 650 every 9 seconds! that means.. without rage a battleship can tank all 6 of my missiles.. pretty much perminantly if it is a half decent pilot!
now then.. you get any other race pilot with 5mil sp specialised in their weapon of choice and you get:
t2 large weapons, lvl 5/4 in all support skills.. so ya get with a decent pilot a base of 1000+dps compared to my 266 dps!
now i know what you are all thinking now "well you can shoot anything within 200km! and choose damage types"
well.. considering that most combat happens within 20km of your target since that is scramming range, and the fact that if im at 200km+ it takes around 20 seconds for my missiles to hit target.. then have to reload every 9 seconds to fire again.. methinks there is something very wrong with missiles.
so effectivly! at max range i have a 30 second alpha strike with 9 seconds added to that every round i fire doing 100dps against tanked resists... my missiles are just guna bounce off peoples ships!

as a suggestion.. i suggest that caldari gets either: +1 missile on raven to improve alpha strike or! missiles get a boost in rof or damage.

Well... having a single BCS is substantially hurting your dps. The first three add at least 20% more dps each which is quite substantial.
But you've already pointed out all the reasons missiles do less damage than other types of weapons. They have very very few restrictions on their damage, doing far more to targets that other weapons may not even hit at all. They sacrifice a lot of damage for versatility. Thus missiles are the primary weapon for PvE, vastly out-performing all other weapons in missions. If missile damage was upped it would make missiles so vastly overpowered it wouldn't even be funny. Missions are already a joke in most missile ships, the solution for missiles is not to make them do more dps unless you nerf other aspects of them (Which they had better not do).
If you want to do more dps than your option is to use another weapon type. If you want versatility you can use missiles. If you want ultra range you use a rail-sniper boat, but you sacrifice damage close range if you do so. Every setup has a pro and a con, that's the idea. No weapon system is supposed to be good in every situation. Missiles are an obvious #1 in PvE, head and shoulders above the other weapons. So you have to let other weapons be above missiles in PvP or it wouldn't be balanced at all.

Cruise is a ranged weapon really. Blaster users have to pretty much mate with whatever they're trying to kill to do that 1000 DPS. Large Rails will still outdamage cruise missiles anyway and that's the way it's been for sometime now. Personaly I got enough missile skills to run level 4 missions and rat in 0.0 and pretty much forgot about them 8 months ago.

So very, very true, it's a pain at times, having ships dance outside range.
Mind if I sig that? It made me laugh. ------------------- My opinions (ie, all of my posting here) are not my corporations. Nor should it be taken as such. |
