Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but can someone help clear up my thoughts on strip miners? I am getting into my Retriever in a coupla days and I want to put Strip Miners on it? Should I be concentrating on Modular Strip Miner II's (at 26mil per miner I might add! @>@) or is it a HUGE stepdown to use the Strip Miner I's? Edited by: Mayoz Miner on 03/04/2007 18:20:27 I would not use Tech II Strips on a Retriever as they are soooooo gankable and someone could/would probably kill you in a caracal(maybe but if not im pretty sure two would easily kill you).
Also When you get in a Covetor and put on Strip II's make sure you use crystalls because I think Tech I out mine Tech II without the crystals.
Do a search for Halada(sp?) he has a very very good mining guide, tbh its priceless

Thanks for the info. tbh, I was fairly bristling at the idea of spending so much ISK for the tech IIs. Plus, the crystals wear out and need to be replaced, don't they? If so, how long do they last?
and, ftr, Halada's guide is a MUST HAVE. "Nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won." |

The crystals come in T1 and T2 flavors as well. For low-end ores (Veld/Scord) the skill requirement is low, but then again so are the ore values. You must use at least T1 crystals to gain the benefit of the Modulated Strip miners.
The crystals last a good long time. I haven't been playing around with 'em much, as I'm not much of a miner, but I've yet to burn one out after two or three hours of mining.

Been awhile since I did the math but I think T2 crystals do not money out when mining Veld (they cost too much versus their benefit). Not sure where T2 crystals start becoming worthwhile.
EDIT: I should note that I actually do use T2 Veld crystals. I don't often mine Veld but when I do I generally need a lot of it and it makes the whole thing go faster. There is then an opportunity cost associated with this...an hour saved mining is an hour I could do a L4 mission which pays for the crystals.

Not really true. Scord is at an all time high, and pretty much the most profitable ore in Empire.

If you are going to buy T2 strips I would recomend waiting a while since they became inventable with yesterdays patch. So hopefully we will se a price drop on them shortly.
