I have heard that defender missiles are totally useless, but I'm not sure why. They seem like they would be at least somewhat useful. Some quick questions about them:
Can you put defender missiles in rocket launchers? The 4 sec rof seems like it would be helpful for defenders.
Will defender missiles shoot down missiles aimed at someone in your gang? For instance, could a group of frigs that knew they were going to be fighting a drake each fit a defender missile to kill the drakes missiles?
Why does everyone say defenders are useless?

quick answers.
1. Yup 2. Nope 3. Ehh
Well defenders needs to be activated when there is an incoming missile aimed at you. So you are not able to have it activated all time, but have to keep pressing the fire button. They are also rather slow at targetting the missile so you often end up getting hit by the incoming missile anyways. The only ones capable of using defenders in this game are the NPCs but the master them perfectly

It is, but defenders are bigger than rockets, and so you can fit very few into the launcher before you have to reload, leaving a 10 sec + the launchers' r.o.f hole in your missile defence. Assault launchers are better.

No, defenders only hit missiles coming at you. And even then, not all the time. And even then, you really have to just spam the F button your launchers are on because they always deactivate after launching one defender.

Because if you load all your launchers with them, you then have nothing left to shoot back at the enemy with, since all your hislots are tied up and there are no drone boats with more than one or two missile hardpoints aside from the Curse (which needs all it's hislots for nos). Also, it can take several defenders to take down the larger missiles, and so some always get through.
Above all, because they won't hit missiles that aren't aimed at you, which is really lame tbh. They'd be a great gang defence tactic if they did.

Yes you can put them in rocket launcher, and it's probably the most sensible way to use defenders.
That said, defender will only protect you (no luck for the allies), and aren't always good enough against fast travelling missiles (like when you're orbitted by a missile-spitting crow). Also a defender cannot kill a torpedo in one strike.
And nobody is overly fond of sacrificing a missile slot to reduce incoming missile damage (especially if another launcher, or NOS could be fitted instead).
