I've been asked to use a BP to make a Perpetual Motion Unit...requires materials consisting of 250 Villard Wheels. Did a wide search for Villard Wheels...no dice. Then tried to issue a contract (all regions)...nothing. How the heck to I finish this storyline quest? I'm tired of having to give up on storyline quests.
It's almost impossible to get help in chat. After an hour a GM spoke with me but wasn't familiar with the mission. A petition returned the information that they won't help with this type of problem but I'm welcome to bring it up in the forums.
BTW, the interfaces in this game (Science/Industry tab, Contracts) are complicated & counter-intuitive, and the tutorials are woeful and brutally inadequate. Hope some of this is adressed as it's probably sending a lot of noobs away in frustration.

From which agent did you get this mission, in which system? Is it one of the "new 120 rookie missions" mentioned in the patch?
Could you post the briefing please, it may include hints as to where to get them. I don't see them in the item database, so probably you have to get them from a complex somewhere.

Edited by: CCP Fear on 04/04/2007 13:14:03 You need to Invent a T2 blueprint of the perpetual motion unit, as you can't make the T1 parts, as the "Villard Wheel" do not exist as an item you can achieve. As you can see by the Mission description you are supposed to bring a T2 version of the item. So the steps are:
Invent the BPC into a T2 BPC Produce the units of T2 Perpetual motion units Bring to the agent.
I do agree that the description is not good enough, and I'll see to it that it's gets fixed.

Read the brief notes on the mission above:
drools, who give it? were?
Rewards are secondary, it is fun!
(unless you get it 10 times in a row)

Uba Virserin, Event Located at Malukker I - Republic University School Division: Advisory
Making Mountains Out of Molehills (5 of 10) Mission Briefing Ok, now I need you to take the datacores you managed to retrieve from the young scientists's wreck and see if you can finish his research, then assemble them into the perpetual motion device he was working on. We still don't know exactly how the thing works, we just know what it does. It's going to be quite something, showing it to the scientific community at the Expo. Please get *****ing. We have some people to impress.
Overview and Objectives The following objectives must be completed to finish this mission: Bring Item Objective Acquire these goods: Drop off location: Uba Virserin Item: One unit of Perpetual Motion Unit II
Rewards The following rewards and bonuses will be your if you complete this mission: one unit of burst two units of Miner I will be awarded if you complete the mission within 2 hours.
(Please note that the profanity filter disallowed the word above)

A lowly frig and two tech I miners for inventing some tech II BP within 120 minutes?
I hate to bring it to you but this should be another story line mission you should prolly abandon. I know I would ... --

You need to fly to a Station with a research-facility. If you get the Mission in Pasha (Amarr), the next Station is Hilaban II -Moon 5- DED Testing Facilities. |

I managed to complete this mission, BUT i had some people in rookie chat able to help me. as others have stated you need to Invent the T2 blueprint. In your science and industry panel. Click on the installations tab. and search area to either region or system (make sure it's not on station) go to one of the installations that came up. I don't think if someone hadn't have helped me I ever would have figured it out.
I received the mission from the an agent in the Todaki system.. somewhere. I helped a couple in rookie chat last night get this finished.

I'm in the middle of this mission now. This is my third day in Eve, and as a pure newbie my advice is to leave this mission line exactly as it is. After having played a host of games since 1999, it is quite refreshing to be involved with one that doesn't hold your hand through missions or quests or whatever that particular game calls it. This particular step in the mission line was quite puzzling, but I was able to work it out. That was a fun part of the challenge. I only came to these forums while doing a 7-jump autopilot run to the research station just to confirm I wasn't heading down the wrong path. Anyway, from my view as about the rawest newbie you can find, this mission line is quite enjoyable and well thought out.

missions with non-obvious solutions and puzzles are fun, and perfectly fine. You have 2 options if you get such a mission:
1. fail it once, and turn it down in the future cause you dont like it/cant be bothered.
2. It really bugs you, you MUST know the secret, you spend the time, and get the reward.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with either approach.

The problem I see with this type of mission is that some months down the road, all the Invention slots on empire NPC stations will eventually have 30 day queues just like the material research ones. Actually, 8 days are enough.
This mission expires after 7 days like anyone else, so with an 8 day queue on every slot you have no chance to finish it at all. If you by chance already accepted it, your standings will go down the drain and except taking that BPC and your complete newbie wallet to pay some player-research-service there isn't really anything you can do about it.
Every station should have (imho) 2 or 3 short-run slots for every type where you: * can't queue a second blueprint (so player A can queue after player B, but A can't queue 10 blueprints) * can't research beyond ME/PE 10 * can't input blueprints that need more than 1 hour per level
Would also mean you wouldn't have to wait 30 days for your 5 hours of ME research on a ammo bpo. At least some dedicated science mission slot that you can only use with an active research mission and only with that missions blueprint.

I am on the same mission.... newbie here
I understand BP / BPC to refer to the blueprints? What is a T2 blueprint, and how do I "invent" the Perpetual Motion Machine I into a T2?

Rastafarian Navy - as i remember you right click the blueprint and choose 'invention' it will then use the datacores to create what you need. i had to jump to another system tho.
as for me - i'm stuck on the last part - use blueprint to build a bantam -
i got all the materials, built the bantam which is now sitting in my hangar - but when i tell the agent i'm finished he just says i need to deliver the bantam to him.
there's 3 bantams there but i dont seem to be able to deliver - any hints?

i still not too sure on how to complete this mission. if i set "invent" and choose production line. this is ok. but seems to freeze on me when generating the quote. have left this progress bar in middle of screen now for 5 mins, 10, 25mins and only way to do anything is to kill eve and try agian. with same result. can anyone advise on steps needed to complete this.
thanks..

I too have the same problem, everything locks up when I try to invent. If I press enter, it starts again and locks up again. I left it for 1/2 an hour still nothin. I really want to finish this one!

Oh my god. So this is what they did with the old "Thermodynamite" storyline mission? Only ever saw that one once and it kicked my arse. You used to have to find a deadspace signature and pick up the Perp machine instead of inventing it and the swarm of frigates was like nothing I ever saw before. Killed my Machariel in ten seconds flat. Really embarrassing at the time.
I may still have a couple lying around my hangar though. Never did complete the mission sequence. The 8/10 consisted of a network of border outposts which spammed out minefields like crazy. I never managed to work out how to tank them properly and gave up.
Drop me a line in game and I will see if I can find the things. May have recycled them though. They gave pretty good Zydrine. |

Eusaliac - 3rd day into the game and I'm on this one too, and getting exactly the same..Calculating the quote is freezing the game and only way out is to terminate the game. Looks like this mission is bugged. My worry is that if you fail/refuse this mission, then that's it from the agent. No more missions. What's a poor newbie to do?

Well I dont feel quite so dumb anymore. I thought I was doing something incredibly wrong and was missing some very obvious to everyone but me step, but I also cannot get an invention quote for this mission.
I still think that perhaps I am doing something wrong, and the datacores need to be used in some manner before requesting the quote. Im not sure , its either not very intuitive, or I need a higher intelligence attribute before moving forward.

The way to avoid getting stuck on the quote for part 5 (inventing the perpetual motion machine II) is to find a station with open research slots (as explained above), but don't start the job remotely. Load the blueprint and the datacores into your ship, and fly to that station. Begin the job there.
This will prevent you from hanging at the quote stage. It worked for me.

Arrrghh... This is too complicated for me, it's my 2nd day and I've been trying to figure this by myself, with no results whatsoever at all! I tried to invent the tech 2 blueprint, and a window pops up saying "You have reached the limit of your abilities for running concurrent factory slots. You are currently running 1 slots, and you can at most handle 1.". And I don't know how to fix that. The whole science interface is nonsense to me :D So if there's a person willing to help me out, please contact me ingame of reply to this topic, asap :)

The problem is this : You only have the skill to run 1 job (which is no problem on its own) but you already have one job running.
So go to the science & industry window and see if you have a production job somewhere. Even if it says "ready" you'll still need to click the deliver button before you can start a new job

Edited by: Roemy Schneider on 08/05/2007 00:12:22 yikes... i'm one year old (ingame!) and never put my nose into invention... and you're supposed to do that on your first day? it may be good to find helpful players (and maybe a corp in the process) but i can see people giving up here....:
Walkthrough- check science&industry button in your left panel
- in the installations tab, use these filters for a full list of NPC-laboratories:
activity: invention location: any range: current region type: public - sort by jumps
- grab the items the agent gave you and hop over to the lab of your liking
- after arriving there, place all the stuff into your hangar
- right-click on the blueprint -> invention
- just pick an installation (a lab slot) and start it up
- go back to your science&industry window
- this time, we check the jobs tab - filters:
all activities, any active state, current universe, me
- job takes 5 minutes
- click on that job and push the button "deliver" on the right bottom of the window
- receive a perpetual motion unit II blueprint
- to build it (requires 100 tritanium) choose/use a manufacturing slot in the same way you chose/used that invention slot
- go 'home'

So glad I found this topic. I couldn't figure it out... since I am so fresh to this game, it made no sense at all. Little more info from the Agent or tutorial would have helped.

Also, this may help. There is a character called "Villard Wheel" (or however thats spelled - if you have the mission, you'll know it ) who has a walkthrough in his bio. --
