Hi,
recently I compared Amarr, Caldari and Gallente ships. I have noticed that almost all attributes of Gallente ships are in-between Amarr and Caldari ship attributes.
For example battleships:
- Abaddon: 7 low slots, 4 med slots, 8 high slots - Hyperion: 6 low slots, 5 med slots, 8 high slots - Rokh: 5 low slots, 6 med slots, 8 high slots
and
- Abaddon: 8500 amor, 7000 shield - Hyperion: 8000 amor, 7500 shield - Rokh: 7000 amor, 8500 shield
This brings me to the question, if Gallente ships could be amor and shield tanks simultaneously!?
All I have to do is to spread suitable tanking modules over the low and mid slots. Maybe shield rechargers and extenders to mid slots for a simple passive shied tank and amor repper, hardener and plating to the low slots for a usable amor tank.
The result - I get an adequate "hybrid tank" and have some low and mid slots free for other stuff. Or I use all slots for tanking and get a "double tank".
What is your opinion about that?
Thanks, Qjuu

The problem i would see with trying to accomplish something like this is that you might get at best an "adequate" tank that won't hold up under sustained firepower.
You won't have enough shield to buffer the damage and you won't have enough armor mods to keep you from getting to hull quickly. Being a jack of all trades (armor and shield) but a master of none can really lead to problems down the road in the higher level missions, pvp, etc.
IMHO, gallente should always try to concentrate on armor tanking in order to maximize the benefit of their ships. Whether that is active or passive tanking depends more on the skillset and the personal preference of the player.
The shields are there more for show than anything else

You're right about them being in the middle, heh. What Gallente ships actually specialize in is massive hull HP.
But, no, hybrid tanks don't work, on any ship. Why? Because you can't be at peak shield recharge and take armor damage. At all times one of your tanks is going to be bordering on uselessness. Not to mention you're devoting a massive amount of slots to make two weak tanks instead of one good one.
Gallente ships can armor tank or shield tank excellently, pick one.

Edited by: Kwylek on 06/04/2007 12:58:25 I never quite understood why we couldn't hybrid tank either. Granted, the Gallente ships have fewer mid-slots for shield modules, but you can only slap on so many armor resistance mods before they become virtually useless. Swapping out a few stacking-nerfed armor modules for some un-nerfed shield modules sounds like a good idea to me.
EDIT: Yes, I said "we" before I realized this is my Caldari alt

I haven't been playing for so long, but this is how it was explained to me.
Gallente are armor tanks, they have enough low slots for the armor and a few other things. And use the medium slots for drone augments, mwd, and cap recharters to allow for constant armor tanking.

IĘm flying a Dominix now, it has 5 mids and 7 low slots.
I could use those 5 mid slots to build a decent shield tank and use the 7 lows to build a really good armor tank. Problem with that is that I would run out of cap trying to keep the shields up and then not have any power to run the armor repairer.
Orą
I can use my low slots for the armor tank and use some of my mid slots to boost my cap recharge rate. Doing this means my shields will melt away like butter. But, my very thick armor will have high resists and IĘll have the power to keep the repairer running for a long time. With some setups I can keep it running indefinitely. Under sustained bombardment this is definitely the way to go.
Double tanking is useful in two different situations. One is when you are really new and donĘt have much in the way of fitting skills. Having both a shield and armor repairer can mean the difference between warping out safely and getting popped by rats. When you get to where you can fit more modules this stops being such a good idea.
The other situation is when you only need to survive a few seconds of an intense assault. (Such as running a hauler of high value ore into Jita.) In this situation thereĘs no reason to fit a repairer, just fit armor plates, shield extenders, and hardener. You are hoping the cavalry can save you before they get through your double tank. (Make sure you fit a damage control for this as it will give at least a 50% resist to your hull hitpoints.)
Other than those two situations, you are better off concentrating on your shields or armor and using the other slots to either boost you cap or to boost your damage output so you donĘt have to tank as long.

Exploit the fact that gallente has a lot of mid slots for an armor tanker. That means more room for cap recharge, and more room for e-war. All else being equal, armor tanking is better than shield tanking.. and mid slots are more useful than low slots.. so you definitely want to armor tank.

I think you convinced me - it's better to concetrate on one tank technique.
But I've still some question left. Summarized I see two fittings:
Amortank: Low slots are used for tanking. Mid slots are free for tank support and ECM/ECCM stuff.
Shieldtank: Mid slots are used for tanking. Low slots can be used for tank support and weapon upgrades (BCS, Gyrostaps, Heat sinks, Mag field stabs).
My questions about that are:
(1) Do you agree, that with this shildtank fitting above I could get an very hard hitting ship with no or less electronic warfare capabilities? (btw: Gallente could do some ECM with drones....)
And if so, do you think that ...
(2) ... this fitting is useable in PvP?
(3) ... Gallente ships could be used as shieldtanker in this way? I think they have enough mid slots for a shield tank (other than Amarr).
What do you think??
Thanks again, Qjuu
