I've discovered different typed of damage. I look up enemy ships and see their resistances and load the appropriate missiles. I'm flying a Kestrel with Light Missile Launcher 1 and am using Inferno, Mjolnir, Nova and Scourge missiles.
I can look up and see what damage an enemy gives but is there a way to see what damage type each shot is? Then if I'm having a hard time with a mission I can refit with appropriate mid- and low-slot modules. Or is this the right way to do it? |

As a general rule, you only need the ability to deal two types of damage:
- Thermal: this is either the primary or secondary weakness of most NPCs in the game. Buy a lot of this. - Explosive: this is the primary weakness of ships that do not possess a weakness to Thermal damage.
Pro-tip: do not use multiple types of ammo in different turrets/missiles. At best, it spreads your damage across multiple resistances, limiting your effectiveness in dealing damage. At worst, it will make some of your weapons completely ineffective as some types of ammo will change the range of your weapons... meaning that not all of your weapons will be dealing the same damage at the same range.
With regards to what types of damage NPCs fire... you can "guesstimate" based on the color of NPC ship background.
Red / Ochre background; Minmatar or some kind of Minmatar background... deals Explosive and Kinetic damage. Green or Blue-White background : Gallente or Caldari background... deals Thermal and Kinetic damage. Yellow / Gold background: Amarrian background... deals EM and Thermal damage.
Pro-tip: Read the mission briefing. It should give you an idea on what faction you will be facing. If no mention is made, your best best is to prepare for Thermal damage and maybe some Omni-resistances.

You'll see in the NPC section it defines the general damage type each NPC faction does and is weakest against. Fitting active hardeners or plugging holes is usually the preferred route. Although, with frigates not getting hit is higher priority than resists. Make sure your prop mod is active. For turrets orbit close, for missiles fly fast, or just range tank.
Only shoot the missiles that do the most damage vs your target faction.
My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

You can use a Reactive Armor Hardener to kind of measure the levels of different damage types. Realistically you're better off googling the rats you're gonna shoot to see what they do.

I'll add "kinetic" to the thermal and explosive mentioned above, simply because some of the Caldari ships have a 30% - 40% bonus to kinetic missiles and that's significant enough to offset the (usually higher) NPC kinetic resists.
For PVE, you can look it up on various websites, as indicated above.
For PVP, though, you may have to memorize the weapon types:
- Missiles, Drones can be customized for whatever damage - Lasers EM Thermal - Hybrids Thermal Kinetic - Projectiles mostly Kinetic Explosive, with some ammo types doing some EM and Thermal
More importantly, though, you can open the Combat Log app and configure the logged and in-space combat messages, uncheck "hit quality" if you want, but do check "ship" and "weapon type", and I also recommend aligning Left and placing the message box somewhere close to your HUD. You can also increase the size of the combat log from 100 messages to 1000, so you can review it after a protracted fight. |
