I have done quite a few complexes in my time in EVE. I have completed 6/10, 8/10 and attempted 10/10 static complexes and was almost always handsomely rewarded with all kinds of expensive Centus and True Sansha modules. I however tired of the competition with whiny alliance members and the fixed timeframes in which were available to do these complexes (i.e downtime conflicts).
So, I was reasonably excited when CCP introduced exploration and proceeded to train all the nifty exploration and scanning skills. I understand that RADAR/MAG sites have been buffed and drop reasonable amounts of invention related items, and that is all well and good for the present. I will continue to do those particular sites, however the exploration complexes have changed very little from what I have seen so far. Before the recent patches when exploration was in its early phases let me paint a picture of what it was like to do angel/drone exploration sites.
(Journal of my lost weekend)
Saturday- 8:30 AM
Off we Go!!!
- After spending the week scanning out various sites when I had time after work, me and my corpmates have located about 10 different sites to keep us occupied this weekend. Granted four of them are either RADAR or MAGNETOMETRIC and will take little time to accomplish, but we have also found some UNKNOWNS as well. There are some drone complexes, one which is INDEPENDENCE and the other is called RADIANCE, I think. The rest of these complexes may be a little more difficult as they are some variation of ANGEL COMPLEX and ANGEL FORTRESS. Most of these names are so similar I have trouble telling them apart some times! Oh well this should be exciting and I have prepared all the proper supplies like beer and chips. I even left the toilet seat up in case I need to make a quick transition! So here we go!
Off to a good start! 10:45 AM
Well we cleaned up those RADAR/MAG sites. These were kind of tough to find but were so worth it. The spawns guarding these sites were pretty pathetic and could easily be handled with one BS and a little support. We hacked open the modules on the radar site and got a few prints for some Cryptic Interfaces, including a Cryptic Ship Interface as well as quite a few of the components we need to build them. There was a book that dropped as well though I'm not really sure what that is for yet. To be honest I was a little bit disappointed with the Archeology (MAGNETOMETRIC) sites, though they were incredibly easy to complete with only a small group of NPC Battleships to defeat I can't say we got all that much out of them. Let's see, it looks like there was a little bit of standard a salvage, a small handful of T2 rig components and a T2 rig BPC. At first I was excited about the BPC, but after looking at what it would take to make one of these it might take us MONTHS to get enough components to make one T2 rig. Hmmmmm, I wonder if I could salvage more T2 rig components doing PVP.....
No more drones plz!!!! 2:30 P.M.
Wow, we just completed two drone complexes and they weren't particuarily exciting. We brought in all Battleships and some logistics just to be safe but it really wasn't necessary. We could have easily done this with two Battleship and here we brought four LOL!. I'm really glad we logged in our alts for this one though becuase there were so many freaking wrecks and tons of minerals to boot. I had anticipated this and brought a hauler but for some reason it wouldn't let it past the Deadspace Gate. Well, that is kind of lame. After we got the repeated "Empty Hive" message over and over again I think we spent the majority of our time salvaging wrecks and bringing loot back to the hauler that was parked outside the plex. It was really annoying. I think I had to warp in and out at least 5 times to move loot even with the help of some of my corpmates, just so we could load up the hauler. Well, at least the value of the minerals was worth it, I think. Ok time to take a lunch break! "Ordinarily he was insane, but he had lucid moments when he was merely stupid." -Heinrich Heine

Edited by: Howitz on 08/04/2007 19:57:43 Then there was sadness.... 5:15 P.M.
Refreshed from my Bean Burritos and Cheeze Doodles that I had for lunch we launched ourselves into the hardest angel complex that we had found. Though we brought in logistics in the first room and a full complement of battlehsips as well as support it was quite challenging. I have never seen so many NPC battleships spawns in a single place before! We were just barely able to keep our ROKH that was tanking alive in the first room after we accidentally shot one of the existing spawns and triggered a new even bigger one. However with sweaty palms we survived and proceded to the next room.... Maybe it was the POS guns or awesome firepower of 50+ sized angel fleet the pounced on us in this next room, however in a matter of minutes our ROKH's tank was crushed and we were screaming at each other on TEAMSPEAK. We were all trying to warp out unfortunately the ROKH imploded and turned into a blue nova of fire as the rest of us barely escaped with our lives...
Back to the Drawing Board - 8:15 P.M.
OK! My corpmate was a little bummed but we revamped our plan and went for max logistics this time as well as reimbursed the poor fellows loss. We convinced him to tank for us one more time to restore our good name and teach those ANGELS a bit of a lesson. So we set out again to finish what we started. The first room was still clear and we breezed past it right back into the the terrifying clutches of the ANGEL fleet in the second room. Fortunately our massive investment in logistics paid off and we were able to beat back the POS guns and finally bring the red on our overviews back to a more manageable level. After walloping the hordes of evil it seems we disturbed the OVERSEER's daily card game. Furious he came out in his flagship with his goons to engage in battle. Though a challenging advesary, we were ready for him this time and handily dispatched him and his minions as well as his battlestations. In short order a message popped up on our overveiw about a new mission!
Success!!? - 9:15 P.M.
We later found out this is called an ESCALATION. Eager from our recent victory we proceeded the 4 jumps we had to go to reach our new destination in our small but hardy battle formation. Upon arrival we prepped our hardeners and brandished our guns. The ROKH warped in to take the intial aggro and the comms *****led as we anticipated his response... "Uhh... There's nothing here." WTF!!!! We had reached a dead end 12 hours later. Licking our wounds we tallied up our losses/gains. We tried to look past our disappointment, the lost battleship, the expense of our preparation, and expenditure of millions in ammunition. However upon further consideration we discovered out of all the salvaged wrecks we had only recieved less than 1000 m3 of actual loot and very little salvage. The bounties spread across all of our gang was less than impressive. All in all our net gain in the entire affair had turned out to be a large negative figure. Where are the loots? Perhaps we will have better luck tomorrow....
Sunday
(Slightly depressed)
Ready for more? - 11:45 AM
It was rather hard to get up this morning after drinking that bottle of tequila last night. But we rallied the troops to finish the rest of the complexes. Fortunately there were no more drones to be dealt with and all that was left were some easier angel complexes. I want to say that I gave a motivational speech and everyone was eager to begin, but that would just be a lie. However we put our heads down and went to work.
Gag me with a spoon and call me a woodchuck - 4:30 P.M.
We finished two more ANGEL complexes, none of which resulted in any kind of escalation. The loot was horrible. The bounties were spread thin and so were we. At this point we were properly discouraged and called it an early day. Maybe we will have better luck next time, if I can convince my corpmates to ever come and do one of these plexes again. Meanwhile in corpchat I read how someone just got a TS warp disruptor out of the local 6/10 plex. I think they were only in there less than an hour. WTF?
Thanks for reading! Though I may have taken a few creative liberties here and there. This journal is based entirely off of my real and factual experiences. Our corp has tried these exploration plexes before and after the recent patches. We did approximately 20 complexes before the patch and only once did we ever recive any kind of faction loot. We got two C-type Hardeners out of a Amarr plex that we just happened to find. Since the patchwork we have done about another 6 complexes and noticed that the loot and salvage was better as well as the reasonable chance of escalation, however we still ended up in dead ends, never getting an faction loot of any kind. We will continue to try and see how things pan out because, well, it is a little more exciting than chain- spawning even if you are making less money. I must say though in its present state, exploration complxes are incredibely lame compared to the current static complexes. Hopefully there are some people out there that can provide some constructive input. Edited by: ghosttr on 08/04/2007 20:04:47 You got it lucky In the new regions we dont have radar/mag signatures, so we dont get the invention goodies. And to rub more salt in the wound all we have is drones, which hold no chance of any faction goodies whatsoever, 1 out of 25 plexes may escalate, but then you get more drones, and still nothing to speak of. I had to loot all of the wrecks to just to try and compensate for the cost of the probes. The cost for scanning down the plex is more than the reward for doing it.

static complexes: low risk, high reward exploration: high risk, no reward
I can only assume that CCP wants it this way for some reason, or why would they design exploration like they did?

I agree exploration still needs a boost, and some bug fixes, some of the esc' paths are not worth it for the amount of firepower / time they take to run, and i've not had any facton loot out of one yet.
i'm kinda on two minds about weather all static complex's should be moved to the exploration system, on one side there is the fact that its good to give 0.0 alliances big things such as 10/10 complex's to fight over, on the other side there are farmers, and lots of them - weather or not they are the kind of farmers who farm for personal isk or for there "employer" to ebay, i think any kind of farming is very bad for the game and should be moved to a more dynamic model.
Eliminateing all keys required for entry or changeing the key respawn times to allow pvp to take place inside the static complex's would be a good start, but i'm straying rather off topic now, so i'll just agree that exploration still needs a bit of a boost, particulery the numner and spawntimes of exploration sites since it seems there are so many people running them now - its the first time 0.0 has actuley seemed too crowded. -

What I'm finding, is that all this "mini-professions" require millions of skillpoints and billions of isk to pay off. Invention? Exploration? Hacking? Salvaging? Archeology? All great if you have tons of capital and more skillpoints to waste, but it's all "High end" content (skillpoint and time and isk investment wise). :(
I'm the alt of the main that the forums picked, and i can't be arsed to go through the "settings" page to change it back, k? |

Radar sites seem to have been fixed... and the rest of exploration compltly ignored, except for the large decrease in pointless wrecks.

Just did my first RADAR site since the recent patch. They definitely increased the drop rates significantly. I got about 300-400 interface parts, an Occult Tuner print, 25 datacores, and 3 invention related books. Not a bad haul at all. On the other hand the unknowns as stated before remain almost entirely the same, and the MAGNETOMETRIC (archeology) sites remain unchanged as well. I mean really, getting ONE T2 rig component per site is just a little on the ridiculous side..... "Ordinarily he was insane, but he had lucid moments when he was merely stupid." -Heinrich Heine

we tried the same experiment this weekend.
radiance: some drone loot, fun, no money independence: some drone loot, fun, no money angel base 1: crytpic tuner interface 4 run mag site: T2 BPC 2 run
was not worth the time and the probes. Maybe leave the static complexes as they are and put one in more constellations. But you only can get the keys during exploration complexes.
better would it to change the loot from exploration complexes with static complexes and other way around.
best would to get rid of static complexes and fix the exploration complexes in the first place.
and who wants to invent rigs, if its barley possible to get enough parts.

Combat plexes (escalating) are just plain broken. You spend days finding them and only 1 time out of 15 they drop some semi-good loot.

The Arch/Salvage sites are still horrible. I have done 5 or 6 mag sites in the last 2 weeks and the loot is terrible. I admit that i am in high sec all the time so far but let's get real. My last site (finished it 15 minutes ago) netted me 9 tripped power circuits, 4 damaged artificials, 3 conductive polymer, 5 burned logic and a drone rigging book. That is the best site so far for me. Most of the time i get almost nothing (3 cond. poly. once). From all of the talk on the forums, even the low sec sites give almost nothing. I find it hard to get excited when I see Magnetometric come up on my Multi's.

Sometimes these necro's are good, they show just how much things haven't changed.
I'm still trying to figure out if statics have a respawn radius at all now, I've not spotted one since exploration began.
