Wouldn't a navy caracal be better?

I've heard the caracel doesnt get the range bonus so you are fighting at 30k range which you dont want with missle launchers. |

I just happen to have all three ships in one hanger, so I'm not using EFT. (these are my numbers)
The Navy Osprey, with 3 HML II, 3 BCUs, with Fury Scourge, does 312dps, 1955 volley, and can hit to 68km.
The Navy Caracal, with 6 HML II, 3BCUs, with Fury Scourge, does 390dps, 1955 volley, and can hit to 48km.
The Caracal, with 5 HML II, 3 BCUs, with Fury Scourge, does 325dps, 1629 volley, and can hit to 68km.
You could fit a couple of railguns, and go with some assaults if you wanted to generate more dps on the Osprey. With a couple of LSEs, some purgers, and hardeners, you'd have a pretty good tank for missions.
Any of ships could be used in most of the L3s.
I know as an Alpha, all your numbers will be much lower, but they're still feasible.

The numbers in my previous post are for a character with almost perfect missiles skills, and a few implants. An Alpha can use those implants, but if all the skills aren't up there, the Osprey will suffer. It could have a pretty good tank using purgers and 2 LSEs, but it's gank is terrible. It gets about 240dps. I would like to get that higher, but for Alphas, that's about it.
For PVE, and if you're thinking of L2s, it will be OK. But, from what I have seen, and done, it will struggle in L3s.
For my Alphas, I had them train hybrids. They can get more dps from railguns than from missiles. I have 3 running L3s in Gnosis', with no problems.

Would you share the Gnosis fit you use (or give some guidance) for us Alpha newbies? It would be very helpful! |

As I said, I have made some Alpha characters. Two that are getting all the training right now are a Gallante, and a Caldari. The Gallante came into Caldari space after training. What is good with that, is that Gallante can use drones and train much more of those skills that a Caldari can. Caldari drones skills are practically useless. So if you like Caldari ships, and want to use turrets and drones, make a Gallente character. Right after the initial training take everything you have and go to Caldari space. After running missions there, you won't be able to go back.
Here's their Gnosis fit:
rigs: 3 x Capacitor Control Circuits Highs: 5 x 250mm Proto Gauss Gun, using Caldari Antimatter and Thorium. Tractor Beam Mids: Pithum C-type Med Shield Booster (70hp/s) Ionic Field Accel 2 x Limited Invul. Field Optical Compact Tracking Comp (tracking and range script) 10mn Y-S8 AB Low: 3 x MFS II (need every dps that can be squeezed out) (Most of the time they fit a 4th) Fourier Tracking Enhancer DC II Drone Damage Amp II
Drones: 4 x Integrated TI (will train for the 5th)
Sometimes, depending on the mission, the hardeners will get changed; or change things to fit a MWD; or add a 2nd Drone Dam. Amp; or use a 4th MFS, and drop the tracking enhancer. This set up with 1,694,000 sp, they get about 470-485dps. 70-85 from drones.
The Gnosis is the biggest ship, and the only battle cruiser, that Alphas can use in running missions.
In most L3s, they have done fine. But last night they struggled in the Blockade.

For level 2 mission and up you want heavy missiles. Range is your biggest ally. Most NPCs like to orbit you between 3 and 51km. Choose an object in the mission area to orbit at long ranges like 30-45km (orbit current) and start shooting.
Fit an afterburner on your Caracal and 2x large shield extenders, adaptive invulnerability field and guidance computer. All the modules drop from NPCs you shoot, so fit a destroyer with 3x tractor beam and 5x salvager and collect.
Be rich in the long run.

Thanks very much for the post, it's much appreciated. I've been trying to run L3s in a missile Gnosis with passive shield and your setup has given me a lot to think about and work with. The difference in DPS in our setups is huge! |

I looked at a passive shield set up and in order to get any decent hp/s, I had to use up slots in the lows that I needed for dps. With 3 purgers, 2 large shields, and 2-3 SPRs, the Gnosis was only repping at about 48hp/s. They could be enough to survive some L3s, but the dps just isn't there.

With the above gnosis fit if you add a large cap battery you can be cap stable, I'd probably swap the tracking comp. Also swapping to specific hardeners for the mission will greatly increase the tank, 2 primary 1 secondary is more tank than the 2 invluns 1 shield boost amp. Most missions it won't really make a difference which you use, but there are some that you will want to swap. Lastly I like a sensor booster or signal amp to increase lock range. with rails the 5s reload and long range means you can swap to hit stuff past the gnosis lock range.
I started off trying to buffer tank the gnosis as I remembered level 3s being a bit easy, and it worked for the first few missions, however with the alpha restrictions the DPS isn't quite high enough to get away with that for all missions as I quickly found out.
This is where my fit is now. For gallente you can add medium drones and probably worth swapping a mag stab for another drone damage amp. The amarr can pretty easily swap to beams/heatsinks and a similar drone substitution. Haven't seen a minmatar fit I like yet.
