Should I upgrade to Omega before playing the story arc or after? Will I need to use ships that an Alpha cannot use? Is it just better to upgrade first and if so please tell me why. I have a month old Alpha with a million SP and have done all the Career Missions. I have 60M ISK to use if I need to and is this enough or will I need more?

You can do the arc in a cruiser easily.
Fast frigates really save time for a lot of the courier-type missions, though. |

Hi
There is a good wiki on that mission series here : http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/The_Blood-Stained_Stars
I have not done it personally, but from a quick scan of the wiki it looks like there is a lot of travel / courier missions. And the combat missions look pretty straight forward. The final one recommends a destroyer or cruiser, which should be no issue for you on an Alpha Clone.
ISK wise, whilst the individual rewards are not enormous by themselves, there are quite a few missions, so your balance will go up as you are running them. So the bankroll you have currently should be sufficient.
Whether or not you upgrade to an Omega clone is totally your choice, but I think you will be able to run the mission arc as an Alpha :)

Mission rewards + bounties come out to roughly 10mil, iirc.
Much more if you loot and salvage.
It's a good chunk of change for a new player. |

An Alpha can easily run the Epic Arc. You will need a ship capable of more than 100dps to kill Dagan in the 2nd last mission. A Vexor can do it easily. I think it's doable in an Algos with alpha skills but it will take a while - make sure to take lots of ammo and get your drone skills as high as you can.
Edit: another way to tackle Dagan is bring a friend! |

Atron is pretty nippy, and the incursus is not bad too. Add a Micro warpdrive or afterburner, and Nanofiber Internal Structure / Inertial Stablilizers to the lowslots to speed up the ship further.

I've done the arc a few times, largely to repair standings. There are 50 missions to run as you go through the arc and in total they pay around 20-25M Isk. You can do it in one ship and you return to the start point at the end, but inbetween go all over high sec to all the main Empire factions. Some trips are 15-20 jumps long, then require you to run a couple of combat missions before another long move.
The whole 50 missions can be done in about 3-4 hours, but the first time you will want to stop and read the text of each mission carefully. It took me most of a weekend the first time.
The advice about using a fast frigate, relates to warp speed when traversing the many long journeys to other systems. So the person who advised...
"Add a Micro warpdrive or afterburner, and Nanofiber Internal Structure / Inertial Stablilizers to the lowslots to speed up the ship further."
...doesn't seem to have understood that. Adding those things will have minimal effect to your warping and slow you down on the combat missions. You should fit your ship for combat and accept the slightly longer times for warp, but that should include a prop mod at least.
There are 15-20 combat missions, most can be done in a Frigate. The 47th (or maybe 46th) and 49th missions are the taxing ones but are done close to the start point of Arnon. There are usually plenty of people in local willing to help if you ask. Or if you travel there in a hauler, leave a Cruiser with the Hauler in Arnon, while you do most of the chain in the Frigate. Use cheap T1 rigs and crush them when done to repackage the ships. |

FYI I have a Catalyst and an Imicus but I am happy to buy another type if that is what is needed. I don't want to lose the Catalyst. So as a Gallente and Alpha what is the best ship or ships for me to use? |

I was able to finish all but the last mission on the SOE arc with a 2.5 day old Alpha in a poorly fit Talwar (missile destroyer). Granted I knew what I was doing. Dagan needs over 100DPS to kill him and my sorry little Talwar of no skills just couldn't pull it off. Asking for help is a common request for that mission. I had a guy in a Drake hop in and pop him for me.

A prop mod refers to an Afterburner or Microwarpdrive.

A prop mod is an Afterburner or Micro Warp Drive and you need them in combat missions for range control. I did my first arc in a Caracal on a 17 day old Caldari char. On this char I did it in a Rifter at about 3 months old, before the Rifter got nerfed, but got help for the 49th mission.
Blaster boats are not the best PvE boats when your skills are low. Which is why people are advising Drones. Ideally you need the ability to hit at range so you can stay away from the main swarm of NPCs, a couple of the missions see 15 or more NPCs coming at you and they can overwelm your tank before you can DPS them down. I think there is one called "Burning down the hive" mid arc where that can be an issue. It all depends on your skills, if they are good enough, you can get through them or you might have to warp out once or twice. A Catalyst would be good enough with my skills, but might be a bit hairy tank wise for you. |

You have to go to Arnon and dock at the Sisters of EVE station, then talk to the agent named Sister Alitura to get the first mission in the epic arc, and then she'll just continue to give you missions and forward you to the next contact in the chain until the whole thing is done.

If you wanna be able to solo the entire Arc I'd recommend using the Catalyst you got from the last advanced military career mission. It can quite easily be fitted to get the around 140 dps that's needed to break Dagan's insane shield. For most missions 8 Railguns are preferable but for Dagan 8 Blasters (Ion or Neutron depending on what you can fit) should be used.
For the missions before Dagan there is one with a Elite enemy that will drain your capacitor which can be quite annoying and which I actually found to be the hardest in the entire arc.

Dagan can be a pig to kill as a newbie, asking in local for help will normally result in somebody turning up in something hilariously overpowered to give you a hand; we've been there so we're happy to help. Another option would be teaming up with a fellow newbie and helping each other on your respective missions.
In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

That is exactly what happend to me. I asked for help in local and someone undocked a Nightmare and alphad Dagan for me. I was nearly appologizing for only bringing a Vexor when I helped some newbie myself for the first time. |

I discovered that if you make a bookmark for where Dagan is, that you can contract it to another toon and they can log in, accept the contract, fly to the point and kill Dagan. The mission owner still has the rights to the kill and can then go back and recover Dagan for the faction turn in (assuming he goes back within two hours). The mission owner doesn't even need to be logged on at the time of the kill.

Don't worry, it's not just you. I thought that for a while myself.
Just finished it the other day. Did most of it in my destroyer (Corax, I know, I know, but missiles) Bought and fitted a cruiser (Caracal) by the time I got to Dagan. All the advice I found suggested back up was essential, but I had a go in the Caracal and he melted. Then I was a good citizen and helped someone who was struggling before moving on.
I wouldn't worry too much about the 'best ship' for the job. It's designed to be accessible. |
