hehe, that was the average day, in the past week, I have started work at 6.30am, sometimes finished at 10pm on other days. Once summer hits and its permanently light here, I am sure I will be working stranger hours still as my body wonders what time it is. This could be the reason why beer is good as you know what time it is to sleep when the beer lets you.
As its project based environment, the workloads rise and fall and thus so do my hours worked. The difference to my last job being this one is interesting and dare I say fun :)
If your looking for jobs, just head over to the Jobs page, with a hundred jobs on offer, you can try your best anyway, Just remember, ISD membership goes a long way and almost all the staff hired are former ISD.
Me working for CCP doesn't work.
1. I don't like the cold. 2. I hate beer (sweet, girly drinks for the win) 3. I have a life where I live currently 4. I don't like Atlanta, GA. 5. I would get kicked out of ISD because I would ban every person being an idiot 6. Did I mention I don't like beer? I'm pretty sure that automatically disqualifies me.
Oh, and don't hate. You know what it means when I say I don't like beer? More for you. ----- Griffin -- 100,000 ISK ECM - Multispectral Jammer Is -- 20,000 ISK Standard Missile Launcher Is -- 10,000 ISK War target sobbing over losing a fight in his T2 fitted Battleship -- priceless |

Oh, how nice with a dev that is dealing with science/invention.
What are your plans to deal with modules that doesn't have any named items to get meta values from? At the moment invention seems greatly affected by the meta value so it would be good to have more than meta level 0 to add to the formula. And talking about the formula, any chance to have some more info on how the chance is calculated or do you rather laugh at us as while we are trying to figure it out?
Do you see anything wrong with the following differences of two blueprints:
Cloaking device I Max run copy time in POS: 11days Invention time in POS: 16h
100MN MWD Max run copy time in POS: 3h Invention time in POS: 1h45min
All the mobile warp bubbles follow the horrendus times of the cloaking device I btw.
And finally, will we get an option to force an invention job to one of two possible outcomes such as Nighthawk vs Vulture?

the number of items without meta equivalents is tiny and mostly ships or items without tech 2 equivalents which don't matter anyway. However feel free to provide a list of modules with tech 2 variants but without t1 metas and I'll see what can be done.

nope, unless Oveur changes the policy. And we don't laugh either, its good to see players figuring it out themselves from variable testing.

nothing planned, there are only a few instances where this happens, strip miner 1, cloaks, command ships where the there is more than one tech 2 variant.

So ships has meta 0 then as they lack meta info in the available datadumps? Must say I haven't seen a benefit from adding them soo far.
As for items with two or less named versions in game:
Cloaking device I All Mobile Warp Bubbles All Afterburners All Microwarpdrives Stripminer I Iceminer I Large Hull Repairer I (none of the named items are seeded) All T1 rigs All shield hardeners All smartbombs
I might missed a few but it is a start

Add frigs and cruisers to that list as well. I must say it would be nice to have two instead of three different outcomes from an invention (fail, worthless or expected bpc).

Nice blog, good to see someone working on Science & Industry. Just wish someone was doing the same for drones, but OK.
Now, being a distrusting fellah, I have to ask you this; as you're a dev and a player, what is your position in game? Do you happen to lead the Dread-fleet of a major alliance at all? Still a member of BoB?

I been lurking in threads, with great interest, where people are trying to devise the formula themselves. One thing that is difficult for people to determine is if and when there is a change done behind the scenes. The man behind the curtain can be hard to deal with. Is the Invention formula setup in a way that you make changes without having to do a patch? Has there been any stealth patching done to the invention process? I'm sure it would be at least somewhat reassuring to know that people are working with valid data, in their attempts to devise the formula's.
I guess in short, has the black box that everyone's trying to figure out been changed without the benefit of patch notes?

I gotta admit, all of the problems, controversies and scandals associated with Eve have made me wonder if CCP was just a bunch of drunken frat boys running amok. This blog does nothing to dispel that notion.
Thankfully, they're programming a game, not medical software.
On the other hand, I almost admire them for convincing thousands of gamers to fund their Animal House in Iceland.

CCP isn't made up entirely out of frat boys. A lot of the (dare I say it, well yeah I do) older people here don't go out often at all. In general though everybody get's along very well at CCP so it's natural that we all party together and at special occasions the older people join in with the younger people. It's nice to relax a little with friends after a hard days work.
In the end CCP is a business though and when it comes down to it we are all responsible people.

Sounds like a fun place to work. Unfortunately fun doesn't get the job done. I get the impression CCP's management doesn't really have what it takes to make real progress and that's not even taking this thread into account. Just take a look at how many bugs have been and still are being ignored for years and it's easy to see that the CEO needs to sit down and have a serious talk with the employees, or be replaced with one that will. After all, at the end of the day it's ultimately his responsibility for the sorry bug-filled state the game is in.
Making mistakes is unavoidable. Pretending they don't exist is unforgivable. ---

honestly, the women I have met mostly so far have been:
1) work colleagues 2) girlfriends or wives of work colleagues 3) friends of work colleagues
so all of the above already know about CCP, the rest I have spoken to are indifferent but there is an inherent cool factor which shall we say installs the 'boyish charm' aka nerd factor when you say try to explain what eve is.
Actually learning icelandic now which is far more complex than any language I have learnt yet. Thank God Icelandic people can all speak english!
but on the general eye candy scene so far as many who have been before will testify to, is sweet and I am sure if your coming to fanfest, will see for yourselves.

Did I get it right ? ... your weekly pay is equivalent of price of 25 beers ?
If so, I have to say - that's pretty low, even concidering that everything elce is paid for.
My weekly pay is about 720 beers (after tax ) and I consider this to be below average, even where I live, which some might consider "a 3rd world country".

oh I'm the cheeky type definitely. I think most of us are to a greater or lesser degree boys stuck in men's bodies. Being able to relax and have fun in a high stress environment does not call for adult conservative behaviour imo. Icelandic people are much more extrovert anyway than UK folk.

Hi Chronotis. It's great to see a dev publically dealing with some of the R&D issues.
Now that datacores etc are based on RP points, I am wondering if R&D agents will be available as a full time profession. It would remove the need to change supply and demand on datacores if you were now able to run multiple missions from R&D agents.
Ie right now it is one mission per day. Is there any reason you could see that it wouldn't be viable to allow r&d mission running to run the same setup as normal agent mission running?
I understand it may require more of the standard courier/administration missions to be put in, but if they increase RP it would allow some researchers to focus on this field, and in turn would increase the number of datacores being seeded to the public for those willing to do the work.
As it stands, the most money is being made by those who have the largest number of alts doing afk research. What do you think about changing this system in the way above, maybe even in return for removing the daily increase in RP, so if you don't run missions, you no longer get any RP.
It does make sense from a researching viewpoint. Why should people get income (read:datacores) if they don't have to work for it.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Thank you for your informative posts ,I am quite enjoying seeing you clear a lot of Invention type things up in the forums. I wish you luck on your long employment stay at CCP.
On another note, do you deal with POS's and/or POS research as well?

Like the previous poster I'm also interested in knowing the following:
- Does item success rate differ per-item or per class of items?
- Can these success rates be changed without a patch? (in the database for example)
- Are these being adjusted and if so why?
I'm not asking for the invention success formula (though I pretty much don't need it at this point now that I have lots of success/fail data) but I was hoping we could get at least a hint on these questions.

Also, I'd consider meta items more important for the items with BPOs that take forever to copy (like the strip miner). Just the amount of time it takes to copy these can make them pointless for invention from the isk/day perspective.

Specific R&D missions would be tough under current mechanics as we really do not have anything that involves player interaction beyond fetch item x etc (which you get now for a fixed RP boost per day) which calls upon the current mission archetypes. But there has always been an internal desire for the likes of science class ships and an assortment of scientific modules and probes and things to probe out there to compliment the likes of the archaeology and hacking mini professions which are just beginning. In short there is nothing stopping us from putting the missions in aside from any sort of unique R&D specific in space mechanics to work with and time to write the missions.

The RP/day thing really belongs to the lottery system which is outdated under current thinking and afaik will be retired at some point but nothing is set in stone.

Invention requires lots of copying, and POS labs only have 1 slot. Furthermore, it is impossible / bugged to have people inside alliance but outside corp that own the POS do copy research. The jobs go through but prints get lost in the ether and need petitioning to get back (and yes I've bug reported this in the past)
My corp relies heavily on our POS to support our invention as do lots of others. Are POS labs ever gonna get fixed?
