Edited by: DB Preacher on 20/04/2007 09:57:34 I'm not sure how many of you know who this dude is but he's basically a miami lawyer who is on a warpath to destroy any games and games companies that he doesn't like.
An extremely recent and disturbing example of this was his rant that the recent tradegy in Virginia was directly the result of video games. This rant, live on fox news occured before any information had been released about the shooter: Jack on virginia tech shootings
However, earlier to this, Jack has been on a constant self confessed attempt to "destroy Take Two", the company responsible for Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt. Finally, after lots of baiting, accusations, abuse, threats and lawsuits, Take Two decided enough was enough and countersued.
Jack stated in response: "I have been praying, literally, that Take-Two and its lawyers would do something so stupid... that such a misstep would enable me to destroy Take-Two,"
The lawsuit has been settled before coming to court with JT saying he will not: sue or threaten to sue to block sale or distribution of any game published by Take Two or its subsidiaries; communicate to Take Two or anyone doing business with T2 (like, say Wal-Mart) any accusation that the company committed any wrongdoing by selling its games; make any future contacts with T2 unless it's through its attorneys. Jack settles
Thank god, now if only all the other games companies he is threatening sue him and the TV companies stop putting him on TV as a self inflated "specialist" (he isn't), we might actually be allowed to keep playing the games we want :D
P.S. no politics please we're british ;P dbp

Its getting a bit out of hand, not sure if you remember, but a few years ago after a particularly nasty incident, we had a game removed from the shelves in the UK. People will blame anything to avoid taking responsibility for their actions :/

I play computer games too, some of 'em quite violent like Farcry. However, I never had the urge to buy a Hawaii shirt with an Uzzi and then go and shoot random people at Oxford Circus.
People blaming everything on games/movies are just evading the real problem. Lack of parential guidance, lack of proper education, *politics*, lack of tolerance, you name it...but games/movies are (if at all) at the very bottom of that list.

The guy is an idiot, to be honest.
I've been playing what would be considered "Excessively violent" video games since I was in my early teens.
Every time some messed up fool goes on a rampage and kills innocent people, morons like this hammer video games and the companies who produce them for no other reason than they can find nothing else to blame.
Shooting up a school has nothing to do with what video games you've been playing, or what movies you've been watching.
It boils down to one simple thing, people's mental health and how they react to unfortunate events in their lives.
Most of the shootings that have occured in the past have been people who've been bullied at school and who have just seen red and flipped, wanting to get back at those who did it, or people who have split after a relationship and have done the same.
I'm not sure about the situation with this in the states but in the UK, if law enforcement agencies were actually more focused on catching murderers, rapists and paedos, rather than sitting en masse over a bridge persecuting speeding motorists on the freeway and arresting people and dragging them through court for smoking a bit of weed, maybe kids and their parents would want to go out more rather than be in the safety of their own home playing video games.
Laughable, to be honest.

Gun availability is a large factor in this, in my opinion. While legally owning a converted M-14, a .45 USP and a Dragunov is what many would call patently awesome, a civilian population having clear access to firearms makes for far more efficient spree killers.
Not to mention rednecks. ----

I tend to agree, although I'm not exactly sure of the specifics regarding the right to bear arms in the US constitution or the legislation in place for gun control. If I'm not mistaken I think it varies from state to state.
I think it's a perfectly legitimate situation for people who are responsible enough to be able to own firearms, but to control that, you have to define who is responsible enough.
Seems to me like there's a huge grey area surrounding arms ownership that needs to be looked into.
Then of course you have the rednecks, who just shoot everything and scream "gaaaad daymn booooy, ahhh gaattta git home so I can smack mahh wife in the maaauth!" drinking Jack Daniel's and driving a random old battered 70's Chevy pickup while six times over the DUI limit.

Ozzy and co used to get the blame for this. Gun laws have nothing to do with it as he would have used a blade or a lump of wood if need be. A lot of the blame does fall on poor upbringing (TV babysitter, ignored cries for help) and the God giving right folks think they have to do anything with no fear of reprisal.

None the less. Looking at school murderers, check out the UK. With the exception of Dunblane (which led to even stricter gun control) one of the worst attacks was by a man with a machete. He attacked a class of young children and their teachers, lots of horrific injury, but they all survived. Facts are, its very difficult to cause widespread death when you're armed with nothing but a sharp knife.
Compare with the Virginia tragedy. The guy had been in a mental institution BEFORE he bought the guns, but was still allowed to purchase two handguns and a bandoleer of ammo. He killed a lot of people. He would have had a lot more difficulty killing 30 fully grown adult-sized people without guns.
Ergo, if he had lived in a country with strict gun control, it is highly unlikely he could have done what he did, on the scale that he did. --------

& Okay that would have to be one helluva lump of wood. I agree in as much as guns didnt make this guy crazy. But guns did make an already bad situation worse. Instead of a handful of victims we have have a much greater number.
If the US gun laws weren't so lax this number would never have been as high. Checking a box that says you arent crazy is the most stupid thing i've ever heard.
And Jack's a numpty I don't even know were to begin on that one.

You know, it's really hard to describe the urbanites who are far worse, without it sounding racist, but I'll say that at least Rednecks are taught by SOMEONE how to handle a firearm.
And they can fire theirs without the need to hold it sideways to ensure that 95% miss rate.

You'll also find that in places in the US where everyone carries, violent crimes are much lower than without. Break-ins at homes are also lower.
How many people break into houses in Texas, how many break in in New York? Which place has guns in every home (legally) and which doesn't?
P.S. The Government of the U.S. doesn't have the right, or the authority to regulate gun ownership. The freedom we have to own firearms also pretty safely ensures there can never be a dictatorship established. It's pretty hard to get a choke hold on a country where you'd have a hundred million militiamen coming for you.

i prefer break ins over getting killed...
Im sure if new york was as strict on guns as most european country's there would be alot less killings then in Texas (i dont know the current stats, this could allready be so)
about the dictatorship thing i really laugh at that.. other country's seem to do just fine without everyone having guns and we are not led by dictators. Oh btw in Irak there was a huge number of guns and they still had a dictator so doesnt really hold any ground.

No clue, it's not been disclosed if it has.
Jack wrote an open letter to Bill Gates this week asking him to ban the killing simulator, counterstrike, so I guess maybe he has a new target and isn't too worried about it.
I can't wait till we release Manhunt on the wii, let's see what he makes of that :D
