You wouldn't believe how often I get this from people in game, even from people who's opinion I regard as pretty good players... Anyone else ever get called a noob for a good alternative setup?

Iv'e called plenty of people noobs becous they decided to fit 1 125mm rail, 1 280mm arty cannon, 1 dual 150mm rail, 1 250mm rail and 1 standard missile launcher on feroxes and the like outside the box is fine, but not head-first into the triangle |

It works well for PvE, but for PvP, its pants. You can't really fit damage mods unless you want to lose a huge chunk of your tank's effectiveness. Also pretty much means no blasters, no webs, no scrams, no sensor boosters, no ewar. It makes a nice bit of gate aggro bait, though. Just dont expect it to do anything other than sit there and take a beating other than drone spamming.

I use it for ratting, because it allows me to be lazy, and handles anything they throw at me.

Passive mryms don't use cap

Not to mention you can tank much more damage with a passive shield tank then with dual armor reps.

Rattlesnake passive tank : 6 siege and 2 NOS, purgers, mostly SPRs and a couple of BCUs, one LSE2, rest rechargers (2-3) and hardners (3-2), purger rigs. Not really out of the box either, just a mega-sized Drake : better recharge, worse resists, overall about the same tankability but better damage vs large targets _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

The beauty of passive tank for npcing is that you don't need to do ****.
You just don't need to turn on and off that armor repper etc.
For pvp... passive tank makes great bait, also in big gangs (size 20+) it's very good on the nighthawk, the vulture and the eos. (And ofc drake/myrm).
Reason being that in a gang of such size your damage or tackling ability won't matter much, however the fact that you can be there that much longer and provide your entire gang with a big bonus from your gang mod will.

If you follow the link in my sig, you'll find a comparison of a passive shield tanked Myrmidon vs. a dual armor repping one. Its not even funny how much better the passive setup is.
Wred ----- Think out of the box, consider passive shield tanking your Myrmidon, you'll be pleasantly surprised! |

It does make me laugh how ppl will laugh and mock something before they've actually tried it. passive shield tank myrmidon does sound stupid though if u look at the ship's bonus it's a total waste of it. However, strangely enough it works extremely well. But, unless u've tried it you never know i guess. eos is ever better at it. again wasting a sweet bonus but at times it doesn't really matter.
But yeah i know what u mean. ppl laughed at my structure tanked moros with medium lasers until i WTFPWN them.

People dont use them for pvp because a standard armor tank can last almost as long with an injector and you get 4 mids to put propulsion/ew mods on.
No one's gonna primary a myrmidon anyways. Might as well put the mids to use and stick some damps on there.

So a NOSDomi is, by your logic, an equally stupid newbish setup, because it doesn't use the 5% large hybrid damage bonus. Who's the newb here, I have to ask... who ever is the newb... _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Bonus is for armor tanking.
If the bonus was bigger, you might have a point, but the bonus is a drop in the bucket compared to the recharge you get with shields.
Another practical advantage of shield tanks is recovery time when you have to warp out. Shield tanker docks, undocks, poof! new shields!
Armor tanker has to stand around and rep back up or pay for repairs. And if you're in really bad shape and take hull damage, repairing that can take forever.

Thats ok, it makes it that much easier to get kills off of people too dumb to realize how strong the tank can be. Passive tank myrmidon just laughs at nos domi's that try to bust its tank with berserker IIs (which would be the best bet against an armor tanking myrm normally).

Yeah not a solo pvp setup by any means, but a very nice one in a gang.

Its not that great in a gang either. Your opponents would just ignore you/kill your drones(without a propulsion mod you cant reasonably close to instant retract/deploy range), then save you for last.
Its far better to fit an armor tank and EW mids, that way the myrmidon can contribute a lot more to a gang engagement.
