Heya Folks,
IGÇÖm Robin, my character name is Kalbuir Skirate and IGÇÖm hoping to become part of the CSM this year. In this post I will introduce myself, and explain my platform, credentials, passion, and focus.
Intro IGÇÖm a director at Pandemic Horde, where my focus is on our new player experience and our tooling & analyses (Square).
What this means is that I spend all my free time helping new players in various ways:
- I founded and actually run the NewBean Initiative (NBI) which is our GÇ£new playerGÇ¥ helpers group within Pandemic Horde. A collection of super useful people who spend all their free time helping new players.
- I've worked hard to find ways to improve Horde for new players, in shape of our flight schools, classes, centralizing information and ways to distribute ISK towards new players.
- IGÇÖve discovered ways that enable us to help more people, faster, and more efficiently. This focus is the only reason we were able to cope successfully with huge influx of new players during WWB and Ascension patch. To put it into perspective we handed out 10,000 ships and 50,000 skillbooks In the first two week of the patch.
- I collect and process feedback on Horde specifically as a means to improve our alliance.
- I run all the industry for the ships that gets handed out to new players.
- Finally, helping new players in-game (duh).
It might not look like it but much of this collides with our tooling and analyses. This allows us to gauge if changes we make have any effect on metrics. We also automate a lot of mundane tasks through the EVE API which allows us to spend more time on stuff that is important rather than tasks that just needs to be done.
IGÇÖm not going to talk too much about tooling as this is not why I'm running for CSM. For me EVEGÇÖs APIGÇÖs, analyses and tools are a means to free up as many useful people so they can do what they truly enjoy: Help New Players.
Why the CSM IGÇÖve had an interest in the game industry, online games and online communities for much of my life. If we go back about 15 years, it wasnGÇÖt uncommon at all for a game company to have a council of players, class leads or community representatives. Skip forward and to my knowledge CCP remains one of the only companies that upholds this practise to a high level.
I believe in this concept and have a huge passion for online communities which for EVE the CSM is a vital part of. While it is a lot of work both for CCP and the players involved, it is my opinion that this collaboration contributes significantly to making the gap between players and developers smaller.
However all of this stands and falls with having the right CSM members with the time, intellect and motivation for the job. I think after 2015GÇÖs CSM a lot of us were starting to wonder if all the effort and time put in was worth it.
I can confidently say that 2016GÇÖs CSM proved to us that they can be useful and contribute to EVEGÇÖs developments cycle in a meaningful way. For 2017 itGÇÖs important we continue this trend and elect competent CSM members.
I believe I can be one of the CSM members that has a positive effect on the game and provide something that I already offer my alliance, a funnel for feedback regarding new players. Much of the analyses and ideas in Horde are things that we can only take so far without running into game limitations.
My hope is that by broadening that scope of feedback to all of EVEGÇÖs players we can work towards solving some of these issues or at the very least get them on the agenda to be discussed.
Importance of CSM this year After phase 1 of the NPE last year, 2017 is going to be a very important year for the success EVE has with new players and potentially the future success of EVE. From what I heard at EVE Vegas, Phase 2 and 3 of the NPE are going to completely change how new players learn the many aspects of EVE. While IGÇÖm very excited about this new direction, I also feel strongly that CCP needs all the help it can get to get it just right. I will say it again for emphasis: CCP needs all the help it can get to get it just right.
You could argue that running for CSM with a voting platform that almost solely runs on new players is a waste of everyone's time. Many old players (cough BitterVets cough) donGÇÖt care about new players, and many new players donGÇÖt know about the CSM - well let's change that!
The real kicker however is that we should all care. If EVE is to exist for another 13 years. The NPE that both the EVE community and CCP provide go hand in hand with retaining more players. EVEGÇÖs biggest issue isnGÇÖt pulling in new players; the issue is holding on to them and introducing them to enough core features that will get them hooked and in love with the game as we all are.
In my opinion one of the biggest struggles of explaining EVE is that both CCP and the community have been playing this game for so long that there is so much knowledge that is implied and accepted to be common knowledge that it gets skipped over when trying to retain or explain things to new players. Luckily team Genesis has been taking a good hard look at that and is definitely on the right track.
If we look at the last 2 years CCP has been on the right track in my opinion with Ascension. However, beyond that we have the smaller changes such as the adjustment of starting skills, Inject All Skillbooks feature, multi buy, multi-fit and Skillpoint injectors that allow new players to customize their character a lot better than the character bazaar offers. There is a lot left to be done and I wish that there was more room for smaller changes like those mentioned above that would do a lot of good for the quality of life of new players. |

I want to contribute to the NPE as much as I can and feel it's something every player in EVE should at least slightly care about. Attracting new players to EVE keeps the game going, creates more content and most importantly fills up the galaxy.
I'm not running based on an idea that I'm single-handedly going to save EVE or make EVEGÇÖs meta great. I think itGÇÖs rather delusional that youGÇÖre going to achieve that as a CSM member. Your role isnGÇÖt to be a game designer but a player with an opinion and the ability to funnel other players feedback.
Instead, I'm running based on something I am confident in, have expertise in and care deeply about. I already spend all of my free time on the NPE, with a lot of enthusiasm and joy, adding a CSM perspective to would be another great motivator and something I would do with a lot of satisfaction.
The key to the CSM in my opinion is this: the ability to deliver proper feedback, able to keep an open mind about changes, but most importantly remember that youGÇÖre not there for yourself but for the community. Meaning that staying in touch and true to the community that is key.
My Expertise In two words my expertise and value to the CSM are NPE and Tooling
NPE I can confidently say that IGÇÖm one of the few people in EVE that experiences the struggles of new players and works towards improving them daily.
In the nearly 2 years that IGÇÖve been trying to improve HordeGÇÖs NPE, Horde has been improving bit by bit, tweaking and streamlining things to affect our retention and success of explaining EVE. WeGÇÖve come a long way but at the same time I feel I could quit my job spend 112 hours a week on improving Horde and still have a lot to do.
There is plenty of overlap between new players struggling in Horde and in EVE in general; such as the UI, what is and isnGÇÖt explained, reliable ways to make ISK and how they are taught (or arenGÇÖt). However there is also a lot of differences, for one thing EVEGÇÖs new player experience in Nullsec is entirely different from the experience in Wormhole space, Lowsec and Highsec.
I donGÇÖt have the delusion that I have the answers on how to fix EVEGÇÖs NPE for all these playstyles. A CSM member is only as good as the people he is willing to listen to. IGÇÖm willing to listen to everyone who can take the time to phrase his ideas and constructive criticism properly. I want to broaden my horizon by not just focusing on HordeGÇÖs NPE but look at the bigger picture together with anyone willing to contribute to it.
If going to Fanfest, Eve Vegas and other fan gatherings has taught me anything, it's that there are a lot of smart and passionate people in EVEGÇÖs community. All of which love to talk about their space hobby (or job :) ). I enjoy listening to those people more than learning about new features or announcements, because that isnGÇÖt what fan gatherings are about. In my opinion they are about making new friends, meeting existing ones and sharing a hobby.
I want to listen to as many of you as possible and have some ideas on how to do this effectively if I am fortunate enough to become CSM member.
Tooling As for tooling, being a middleware consultant and full stack developer in real life I am someone that looks at data as a valuable asset that supplements a process, the process in HordeGÇÖs case is turning a new player to a long term EVE player.
EVE has such a wide range of publicly and privately data available that it becomes an awesome repository for analyses and tooling. Horde uses much of this data to save valuable time and help new players.
This is something I could write a long article about but IGÇÖll do that another time, a quick TLDR impression you could obtain from the screenshots below.
Screenshots
Having spent almost 2 years integrating data and tooling for Horde I can confidently say I have a firm grasp of the various APIGÇÖs EVE offers(CREST / XML API / ESI) as well as the limitations and potential growth it could make.
Thank you for considering me as your CSM member and please feel free to ask me any questions. I look forward to answering them.
Regards, Kalbuir Skirate Robin

Hi,
When I heard about WWB, I finally decided to try out Eve. I joined the game on trial account and within 4 hours, I was on the front lines getting blown up in ships provided to me by NBI, a program led by Kalbuir.
If it was'nt for the people in NBI, who guided me for 4 hours and tolerated my stupid and silly questions, I may not still be here.
But when I experienced pvp and hundreds of pilots fighting in space, I knew this was the game for me and 9 months or so later, I'm still here.
NBI gave me the skill books, the skill plans, and the ships to pursue several aspects of Nullsec. Pvp, mining, exploration, ratting and many other things (memes ). This allowed me to go ahead and give a shot at everything without there being any hurdles.
Everytime fleets went out at the time and when they still go out, newbeans are specifically encouraged to join and they get free ships. This culture has it's roots in NBI.
Despite the nullsec politics and Horde's involvement, the alliance still primarily caters to new players. You wont be surprised that the leaders of one of the biggest entities in-game spend considerable time flying newbean ships and tweaking the fittings to ensure effectiveness of ships in fleets as well as the ability of the new players to fly them and make an actual difference and contribution in the fights.
Training new players is just one thing, training content-creators is also important and Horde's leadership allows anyone to FC the fleets and actually train FCs too.
Kalbuir is being quite humble about the amount of work he does for Horde and makes things smooth for us in terms of services that he has coded for us.
Kalbuir, you have been a great help, without the support structure that you established, I probably may not have stayed around in Eve.
Thank you for the services. I believe your first hand knowledge and experience in designing and implementing NPE is a great contribution to Horde and Eve community.
You have trained 1000s of capsuleers and we're proud to call you our director.

Kalbuir is a guy who genuinley cares about this game and the NPE. He has innovative solutions to even the most complex of problems, puts others intrests before his own and would be a genuine asset to the CSM. The amount of work this guy puts into Horde is insane and i have no doubts that his work for the CSM would be treated with the same dedication. If the NPE, API or just having a smart, hardworking guy on the CSM matters to you, please cast a vote for Kal. |

I don't think it's any exaggeration to say (personal opinion) that Pandemic Horde would not be the force it is today were it not for the unstinting efforts of Kal to try and make us the most effective group around when it comes to helping new players into the game - and then to retaining those players. I'm not putting down any of the other groups and small corps who help new players into the game, but I really believe we have a system that must rank up there with the most efficient in Eve. Please take the time to check out the screenshots, for example, and try and get a handle on what we have access to in order to help new players.
Kal devotes an inordinate amount of time to this. He is totally passionate about what he does, and he inspires all of us to be as passionate as he is in helping new players find their feet. I am a very proud member of Horde's Newbean Initiative (NBI) and I devote some of my time to helping new players out. Note, I said some. I have other things I like to do and Horde lets me do them. Kal devotes his time to the new players and to us in the NBI, to help us become great ambassadors for the game to our new members.
A vote for Kalbuir Skirate isn't a vote for Pandemic Horde, it is a vote for a man who will be as passionate on the CSM towards helping the new player experience for the whole of Eve, as he is towards helping the new player experience for people joining Pandemic Horde and he will come at it with a staggering amount of knowledge and understanding of how Eve works (and how it doesn't). Kal will make a difference and it will help all who play this wonderful game.

Kalb is a man with both the willingness and the tech background to run number crunching and data analysis that can help CCP determine what impacts new players the most. He has been doing this for years already with Horde Square. I personally think he is the best thing to happen to new players in years. He has my top vote for CSM candidate.

Acknowledging that being on the CSM isnGÇÖt about wish fulfillment and you donGÇÖt really go there to give direction but to provide advice on a direction, feedback on plans and to help brainstorm GÇÿwhat ifGÇÖsGÇÖ when askedGǪ
Can you provide us some examples of what your constructive feedback would look like on any current mechanics, functionality or balance you feel passionately about?
I realize that's an open ended question without any specifics or quantities requested. IGÇÖm asking because I want others (and myself) to see an example of your thought process, level of knowledge, writing style and hopefully balanced approach when talking about a topic you are passionate about. I think it is important that CSM members have the ability to talk rationally and intelligently about topics they feel are important and can take into account play styles other than their primary chosen style. Ie: Can you represent (to the best of your ability) the entire player base on general topics and on topics that you have a greater knowledge can you engage in discussion that involves seeing the topic not only from your particular play style.
Other than the question above - I already like you because you do amazing work with Horde and it has been a pleasure seeing you work your magic keeping our newbean chaos organized. Thanks for all you do Kalbuir.

I am simply 1 of 1000s of success stories that could be attributed directly to Kalbuirs hard work. But instead of bragging about all the kills Ive been apart of ( https://zkillboard.com/character/96826799/ ) I would like to make some key points.
1.) Kalbuir has helped to create a community of helpful capsuleers unmatched in EVE. 2.) Our website and its integration is amazing. Its so good CCP should consider hiring Kalbuir before he is elected to the CSM. 3.) Our NBI staff is a direct reflection of the person that leads them. They are always willing to help. But its more then that. They are enthusiastic about it. They never make you feel like a dumb noob. Even if you are.
Kalbuir has made Eve fun for me, and 1000s of other pilots.
Vote Kalbuir for CSM!!!

Kalbuir is an amazing individual. He keeps a low profile, but anyone involved in PH can point to some service, some point of contact, some way in which Kalbuir has made that pilot's space-life richer and more enjoyable. The work he does on our tech services is outstanding, and his dedication to making the experience of every player as full as possible is unparalleled. He is the champion of the Newbean, and has created numerous systems within the PH framework specifically designed to familiarize new players with the game in general, PH's part in the game, and the roles each pilot can take upon themselves within PH and beyond, providing both in- and out-of-game support structures for all. I can not imagine anyone more devoted to nurturing this game and its players, nor anyone better suited to helping Eve find its path for the future.
Kal, best of luck to you. I may be but a simple Hordeling, but you have my full and unmitigated support. |

Kalbuir has brought technology and innovation to the NPE of Pandemic Horde since it's beginning. Constantly attentive to the needs of his new player corporation and development of tools to bridge the gap between freshly registered players and older more experience players looking to help a newbro. He is the man when it comes to NPE and will bring a wealth of fully applicable knowledge to the CSM. Thousands of players have learned the ropes of EVE under the umbrella of his work and I wish him the best of luck in his campaign.

Going over some questions that were asked
How much do you answer to the upper ranks of PL and others and how much are you your 'own'? A common misconception people have about Horde is that we ultimately answer to PL. Truth is I can say what I want but people will still doubt that this isnGÇÖt the case. And that is fair, that was the price we paid when we decided to call ourselves GÇ£PANDEMICGÇ¥ Horde.
We have a good mix of PL members who are directors and Horde GÇ£grownGÇ¥ directors whose opinion all matter equally and work together smoothly. Every one of those directors ultimately answer to the CEO, Gobbins who makes the final decisions if we canGÇÖt come to a decision. However I canGÇÖt even remembered the last time that happened.
For the last 2 years IGÇÖve been running my own projects inside Horde focussing on new players without negative interaction from PL, in fact a lot of the their experience and views about EVE have helped me tremendously. I do not see how doing the same sort of activities in the CSM would suddenly cause a need to answer to anyone.
What I hope is to have people on CSM12 with me that disagree with me, because discussions are a good thing. If CSM12 is a group that can discuss and argue with each other and keep an open mind about each others opinion weGÇÖll be just fine.
The CSM in my view isnGÇÖt a group that takes a vote and then pushes an opinion through. It should be a group that discusses and wins each other over, finds a middle ground or agrees to disagree and communicate both viewpoints to CCP for them to make the decision.
Will you expect to continue to be able to do the good work you do if CSM takes a fair share of your time or have you considered handing off responsibilities? Delegating work I am passionate about isnGÇÖt exactly one of my strong suits and probably one of my biggest weaknesses in terms of the CSM candidacy. I put an insane amount of time into my responsibilities at Pandemic Horde and it that regard iGÇÖm going to learn quite a bit this year :).
The plan IF I win in April is as follows, I plan to keep all my current projects running which means I wonGÇÖt be stepping down as director, still be running NBI and working on our tooling. However new projects will most likely end on someone else his plate, luckily we have plenty of people willing to step up and take on those challenges.
That realistically might still leave me with a shortage on raw time, so additionally iGÇÖm going to do something iGÇÖve been wanting to do for a while now which is work less and spend more time on the things IGÇÖm passionate about or wish to develop myself into. This includes the CSM, Online Communities, EVE, Horde and hopefully a bit of PR & Marketing (If there is time left). |

What is your viewpoint regarding Faction standings and as a CSM member, what changes would you propose to CCP pertaining to game mechanics for Faction standings?
IGÇÖm going to assume you mean the faction standings towards NPCGÇÖs and the 4 races. This isnGÇÖt a subject iGÇÖm particularly an expert on and would be something I rather talk to other players and the community first to see the different viewpoints everyone has. On a lot of these subjects I think my personal opinion should weigh as much as every other dude but I do realize that people are curious where I stand as well.
I see my role more as someone representing the views of the community, trying to mediate between polar opposites in the community and hopefully bring combined feedback and solutions from those discussions to CCP.
My personal opinion would be that faction/npc standings at the moment mean very little in EVE, too little. With the (accidental) removal of needing them for jump clones becoming permanent this removed yet another reason to have them. As well as NPCs that used to give faction standings no longer being around.
On the subject of jump clones specifically I feel they opened the game up a lot and especially gives newer players a good benefit. So I wasnGÇÖt against that change at all but it taking another use away for npc standings is a shame. However there arenGÇÖt very many things that require NPC or faction standings any more besides PVE activities.
Ultimately standings should be just that, not a mechanic on itself. What should matter most is the mechanics how you obtain them, they should be fun and engaging. Standings should be the negative and positive effects of those those mechanics but not as it as the moment the goal itself but rather a side effect of the activities you do.
The means of gathering the npc and faction standings are considered very boring / tedious for a large group of players. I believe that before you can make standings mean more weGÇÖll need changes to how they are obtained.
At the moment standings are just a number and unlock some things, they donGÇÖt matter to a large portion of the eve community. I feel what a lot of people want from them is the universe to change its behavior towards you based on those standings much beyond not being able to dock or being chased in highsec home systems.
For all of that to happen you need to start at the core issue which in my opinion would mean altering how standings are gained. The operation center is coming this year maybe thatGÇÖs an opportunity to put a bandaid fix on a much larger problem. I do feel at the core EVEGÇÖs PVE system needs to get some love for standings to really shine at a later point again.

Kalbuir Skirate,
Thank you very much for the insightful reply. I like how you see your role as representing the views of the community to CCP. However I think your assessment that standings donGÇÖt matter to a large portion of the eve community may be incorrect.
I believe Faction standings should have more impact on game play, especially since Eve Online is based on having a balance in 'Risk vs Reward' and 'Actions vs Consequences'. That's what makes this game great. In the past characters were accountable for their actions, now most everything is being dumbed down and turned into easy mode for the instant gratification crowd. That's something I don't want to see happen to Faction standings.
Currently the in-game aspects of Faction standings : Positive Faction standings are the only way to access Cosmos Agents (one time access). Positive Faction and Corporation standings are needed to access Research Agents. All other Agents only require minimal amount of Faction standing for access (-2.00 or higher standing). High Faction standings reduce Market Broker fees and Reprocessing fees in NPC stations. At -5.00 or lower Faction standing, Empire NPC's will attack when in their space.
In my opinion CCP made a big mistake when they removed the need to have positive Faction standings to anchor POS in high sec space. Having that requirement made Faction standings more meaningful instead of currently just being a way to access Agents or obtain lower Broker fees. Now I would love to see more content pertaining to positive Faction standings be added to the game. However at this time my inquiry is based more on the negative effects of Faction standings to the playerbase. Since it takes time for players to ruin their Faction standings then it should also take some time to repair those standings. Unfortunately that info is basically nonexistent in-game when it should actually be readily available and easily understood by players.
I created and shared the 'Faction Standing Repair Plan' with the playerbase on the forums back in 2010. Over the past 7 years it has helped countless amount of players to rectify what seemed like an unsolvable issue. In my opinion players need more options available to repair negative Faction standings. In fact most of the Event Agents listed in that guide can only be accessed once in the characters life.
There's a lot of players in-game who don't read the forums and don't even know that guide exists. They've basically accepted the fact they're cut off from engaging in available content due to negative Faction standings. Repairing negative standings is a big task even for experienced players who are familiar with 'The Plan'. New players who are still learning the game can easily mess up their Faction standings right from the start without even knowing it, resulting in loss of access to available content or worse, no access to half of Empire space.
Anyway, after 7 years of helping players in the forums to repair negative Faction standings, I just wanted to provide some feedback through the CSM for CCP to consider. I believe these options would definitely help players in-game.
Faction standing repair process be implemented in-game and be very intuitive, not obscure (tutorial perhaps). Changes to Faction standings will notify players with on screen pop up message (option to deactivate). Actions that would cause negative Faction standing trigger on screen pop up warning (option to deactivate). All Anti-Empire mission briefings have a warning informing players those missions will incur negative Faction standings. Implement Tags for Standings in-game based on similar game mechanics as Tags for Security. Add NPC Agents to in-game Agent Finder for Faction standing repair (similar to proposal in my forum signature).
Once again good luck with the upcoming election.

Kalibuir has been one of the cornerstones of Horde and especially it's new Player experience.
I started playing eve 6 years ago where I quit a few months later due to bad experiences in null corps ...especially for a newbie to null like me. I created a new char and joined horde a few months ago, as a day one char. The support system Horde has for newbeans is amazing, and made me sub to this game for the foreseeable future.
As someone who has a background in the Software Industry I believe I can appreciate all the work that Kalibuir had put into making the Horde infrastructure the way it is now. The Gobloons system and the New Bean Initiatives are great examples. I know , without a shade of doubt that Kalibuir would be the perfect candidate for CSM.

07 Candidate!
First, thank you for your time and effort (both present and future) in representing the capsuleers of New Eden! TheyGÇÖre much appreciated.
IGÇÖm preparing to cast my vote in the CSM12 elections. After reading the information you submitted, though, I still have a question.
By way of background, I started in Eve as a hauler, moving freight in T1 industrials and gradually working my way up in both ships and cargo. However, I repeatedly found my progress impeded by gankers who would destroy my ship and steal my cargo. In low- and null-sec space, thatGÇÖs to be expected. You place your bet and take your chances. In high-sec space, however, this is very frustrating. Why have high-sec space at all then? This frustration drove me into anti-ganking, and IGÇÖve been a proud member of Thomas en Chasteaux's High-Sec Militia for several months now.
So, my question. Where do you stand on high-sec ganking? IGÇÖll concede that ganking is a legitimate style of game play, as CCP has ruled. But I also feel that it should be difficult and dangerous (for the ganker) in the 30% of New Eden designated as high-sec space. In particular, IGÇÖd like to see CCP tweak the game mechanics so that the criminal flag generated by looting a ganked freighter in high-sec space follows all players who handle that loot, and otherwise make looting more realistic. (Thomas en Chasteaux's ideas, not mine.)
As a member of the CSM, would you present such an idea to CCP? Would you push for its adoption? What other game changes might you consider to make high-sec ganking more difficult and less profitable?
Regards, Cochise Chiricahua. |
