I've just set up a new high sec research pos, and was wanting to be able to use the invention slots.
To use an invention slot, one needs various items; the datacores, the bpc, the data interface, etc.
1.Where can these items be, for the invention to be doable?
2.Can any of them be in a station in the same system? 3.Is there any difference in having things in a corp hanger array in ones pos, as compared to having them in the actual mobile laboratory?
I'm not hugely enthused about having the data interface in the pos (although if that is where it needs to be...), and I had hoped to be able to keep the bpc's at the station.

Consumed materials need to be inside lab array in same tab as nonconsumable materials in your corp hangars in local station.
Have not tried actually to use them for invention but thats how it is for other stuff that consumes materials in copy/research process.

For remote invention, the datacores, the decryptors and the base-items to be used must be in the mobile lab input hangar for the job. You also need a proxy BPC in that hangar (this BPC is not used in the job).
The BPCs to be invented from need to be in a station in the same system as the POS (otherwise you cannot see them remotely through assets or science & industry windows, just right click on the BPC and choose invention (These are the BPCs used in the job, but one proxy (single run is enough) has to be in the lab with the consumables).
The interfaces, can be at the POS in the input hangar of the mobile lab and remote invention will work. I will try to do a job with the interface at the station in the same input hangar as the consumables at the lab, but I have a feeling this will not work.

Thanks folks.
I've managed to start some Invention jobs in my pos, with the datacores, the meta items, and the data interface in the mobile lab (means I can only do 5 at once without having to go back there to move the interface, though, which is irritating).
Interestingly, I managed to start the invention job with remote bpcs (in the station in system), dispite the bpc showing up as red in the quote (cause there isnt one in the pos lab).

Does the used BPC used have to be remote or can it be in the POS as well? Since its consumed in the process, I see no reason why to leave it in station.

I just dropped everything into the lab. Works well.

OK I think we figured all yer bits need to be in the lab hangar to get it to work.
Next Q. The expensive ship data interfaces, once a job has been started can these be moved out of the lab hangar and back to the safety of a station? Or do they have to stay in place until the job is completed?

Interfaces are left sitting there after you start the job, so no... they're not tied up like BPOs are. You won't even see them disappear for a second.

The advantages of having the bpc in the station is that you can then start the invention jobs remotely. The bpcs show up red on the manifesto of things you need, but the job can be started anyway.
