Morning all,
After several years of playing Eve on and off doing PVE carebear mining and mission running I kept finding I would get bored/real life intruded so I would cancel the subscription and not play for several months. After a while though, I would renew for a month or two but still find I was getting bored. Did think about PVP to spice things up but was put off with the lack of time I had to play (real life sucked at the time) and steep learning curve - more like a wall! Now real life is better, I though I would finally bite the 'bullet' and get into PVP and all the fun that comes with it. My question for all the good and not so good folk out there is this. Do I start with a fresh character with the Skirmisher pack and leave the cuddly but boring old main as a ISK generator (eg Hi Sec mining while watching TV with wifey), or is it worth keeping the old main who has most of the skills on mining and try to go PVP with him?

Since you don't have combat skills on your main that you would be losing out on, I'd suggest a new character. This would allow you to join faction warfare - an excellent way to start learning pvp - without worrying about putting your income generator at risk, or lowering his sec status.
If you like reading about low sec piracy or wormhole pvp, you might enjoy my blog.

Mostly it's about getting friends. This is much more important than any particular skill on your toon. Find a PvP corp, show up for roams, fleets, etc. If you can't fly a DPS ship you can always fly tackle. It takes next to no skill to train up a frigate and put a warp scrambler/disruptor on it. Gangs ALWAYS welcome tackle - you can never have too much.
You will die often, as you learn what not to do, when not to engage, etc. So don't fly really expensive ships until you know what you're doing. Talk to your friends and figure out what kind of ship they'd need you to skill up for. Maybe if your gunnery skills are bad you'd be better off in a support role like neuts, webs or ecm or even logi.
PvP is fun. It's not fun to be blobbed, but it's fun to be the blobber. But then again combat was never about "fair". And once in a while you'll get solo kills that have your heart pounding because they'll be that close.
PS: This is my industrial support toon not my PvP toon - I have 6 others. I _do_ know what I'm talking about despite Ptraci's underwhelming killboard :) |

Consider joining us in null!
Our experienced pvp players have just started training us noobs for pvp. And in the meantime, while not doing pvp, you can reap all the benefits that null sec brings. We're not big at all so you won't be treated like a number, but like a true man (little iron maiden reference here) |

Welcome back, again.
Id recommend starting a new character for PvP and keep your main for supporting him.
With your new toon, Im not sure NS, though profitable for your mining, will offer you much in PvP.
Id recommend looking into Faction Warfare for starters.

Thanks for the advice people, FW looks tempting and a fun way to get into PVP. Not tried Null sec yet - only been on 1 roam into low sec before. I know, scaredy cat etc LOL. Might even use one of my old accounts that has a combat orientated toon - used him as anti NPC pirate / cargo hauler when I was really in to mining and non of my carebear corp mates were around. Hmmm, just checked and he has over 3.7 million skill points about 2/3 of which are in combat stuff. I might have a plan here! |

You can only learn PvP if you tell yourself highsec doesn't exist and move out permanently off that place. But ofc you're not gonna do this because cuck. |

Get over yourself, Kiddo.
OP, PvP is much much easier to learn and succeed in with a group, my biggest suggestion is take the character you have, get them a pvp jump clone and join a Corp that will help you learn. Soloing isn't as much fun |

Yeah because hitting F1 repeatedly is leet in null. Low sec has a nice edge to it |

And people wonder why players enjoy PvE (maybe because no one's telling them the "right" way to do it all the time...).

Exactly because of attitudes like this, when people get offended with the truth.. it's a dead end, I just do it for the fun of it.

I don't tell players the right way to PvE, but if they inquire about the most efficient or effective way to do something I'll happily oblige.

I must admit that to me there are two versions of Eve. High sec which feels like a MMMO and the Low/null - a dark scary portal to a unique place.

FW is a very good place to dip your toes in PvP. Plus when you get more experience and kills in one of the militias, the natural progression is often to join some of the local pirates later, for flying bigger stuff if you get tired of the FW mechanics. So FW is not a blind end.
Just a note, if you want to get into PVP ASAP, before your alt is ready: You could also try to battlefit some of the mining ships like venture or procurer and bait frigates into yolo attacking you. With good drone skills, these ships can be decent and people are not afraid to solo them because stripminers... just remember to pull your drones when they are being shot, and then relaunch them and expect to die from time to time.

Some people like blobs, others like to solo, third people like to blow up structures and call that pvp...
Either way PVP is the most fun thing you can do in EVE. I recommend starting in two ways:
1. Join FW PROS:
- You will learn how to solo pvp
- Even if you have 10-20 mins of play you can get yourself some PVP action immediately
- Personally, my heart is pumping beating faster in the beginning of a solo encounter than in a big fleet encounter.
- You can actually make some decent money in FW while you are PVPing
CONS:
- You might not learn tactics of fleet vs. fleet pvp.
- Some FW fleets are kinda lame and Fleet Commanders can be subpar
2. Join a big nullsec alliance PROS:
- You will feel like you are a part of something big
- You may get some kills of big ships
- You may make some good friends
- You will learn big fleet tactics / strategy
CONS:
- Most likely you won't learn how to solo pvp
- Fleet ops may take many hours. Most of the time you will be waiting
I think the two ways I described above are the most noob friendly. Read some guides and watch some Youtube videos ("eveiseasy" is really good). Once you get more experience you can expand onto other PVP. |
