just a couple questions:
with mods so prevalent, does bethesda actually support peopel making the mdos? (as in, they dont even give a crap about people tampering with their games)
second, if i install mods, will the game still be able to update when an update is released? (whetehr its a DLC off steam or an actual update) (and by mods i am referencing mods such as the FX or whatever post-processing thingt hat everybody raves about.)
third, should i make copies of the roiginal game files before i put mods on the game to ensure i dont FUBAR the games files? (game has a cd key, so would be a pain in the ass to reinstall)
fourth, is ther any warnings, advice, or recommendations people can refer to me on or about mods, what order certian mods should be installed to prevent conflict, and etc?
thanks in advance for yalls help, the EvE kiddies seem to be more computer savvy then in 99% of MMO's, which is why i come here to ask. (actually gotten better advice from here then ive ever gotten from GeekSquad or other "services" i end up having to pay to hear BS from) |

I don't have any experience in modding whatsoever, and really don't have any advice (sorry), but I did have a somewhat related question...
Is there any way you could make skyrim combat more fun with a mod?
I mean really, the two things that have always been a big downer for every elder scrolls game are the cheesy animations and the crappy combat system. Don't get me wrong, I like the game still, but I just wish that they would try to improve this at some point in the series, or if someone could make a mod to do it... |

Combat in this game is way.... way... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. Better than the last game.
I could barely play oblivion because it looked awful (animation wise). |

Their games are made with modding in mind so no worries there. For mods&more, go here. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. |

I agree it's much better than Oblivion, but it still sucks.
I just honestly wish they could make combat fun for once. That's all I want. Magic, stealth, or warrior, it's all just poo to me as far as combat goes, I just deal with the combat for the fun adventure and the stuff I find at the end of it, but there are some games where you really start to revel in the combat system, and that's what I really want... |

and it looks like some of the mods say whether or not you should install another mod before or after that one is installed, so good news there. going to prolly end up modding the ehll out of this game, lol.
i guess keeping copies of the original files is a no brainer as well.
and asyou said made with modding in mind, so if i download a couple mods and put them into the game's files, the game will still be able to update correctly?
also, thanks for all the responses guys. |

I have been modding TES games since Morrowind. They are made with Modularity in mind, thus making them very very moddable. Same with Fallout 3 and FNV.
The Skyrim Nexus, as provided earlier, is THE best place and semi-official modding community for most Bethesda games and a few others, like Dragon Age and Dungeon Defenders IIRC.
You mostly need an account there to be able to download the largest of mods.
I advice you wait a bit for the full Developer Kit to be disclosed for Skyrim which should be out in the open in January.
The Dev Kit is basically the modding tool devs use to create rooms and spawns with all interior amenities within their games. As far as I know the dev kit for Skyrim will be released in January as I already mentioned and you will see a HUGE spike of Mods for it soon.
If you for instance own say Fallout 3 or FNV or Oblivion you will see the huge amount of mods available for the game and after awhile you will see the best player created mods for the game. Oblivion these days it's simply an awesome game by the sheer quantity of mods that alter textures, magic system, armor and skill systems, making the "replayability" of the game increase tenfold.
If you want to try the world of modding let me tell you, its what makes PC gaming superior to console gaming. Up to this day I still play Fallout 3 and havent properly started FNV because I'm still having a Blast with FO3, specially with the Weapons and Combat revamp mods out there.
Go now, but you will see after they release the dev kit for skyrim the nexus will be flooded with all kinds of mods.
My favorites usually are those that retexture the whole game (I have about 6gigs worth of retexturing for FO3 and FNV which make its visual appeal superb and able to truly exploit my SSD and current GPU) and the Weapon and loot table addons that introduce usually over 150 new weapons for the player with proper textures and ammo. In Skyrim I think the most popular ones will be the ones that alter combat as I have seen a lot of people want something diff. That's why MART'S MUTANT MOD for FO3 was so great, it totally made FO3 an evil combat game of destruction.
I'm Brujoloco in the nexus too , if you have any questions feel free to ask, also community reps there are very very very friendly if you respectful and took your time in reading all appropiate FAQs and Readmes beforehand.

Install the nexus mod manager beta. It makes keeping track of the 20+ mods you're bound to be running very easy, and makes enabling/disabling said mods even easier. Some mods aren't yet compatible with it, but those are few and far between and generally not a mod many consider to be mandatory. I find the FXAA injector to be absolutely necessary though, vanilla skyrim lighting on the PC is terrible and caves are just too bright to the point I never have to use torches. With the injector saturation values get beefed up, and while it colorizes the world more, it makes cave lighting much better. |

the ability to not enable/disable at will was what was making me a little paranoid about the mods, not knowing whether or not i would like it but be stuck with it.
thanks mate, and yeah, the post processor is the one thing all my buds say i have to download mandatory, and again, if i cna enable/disable at will, all the ebtter, since no matter how crappy, i sometimes like playing a game vanilla for a while, just to prove to myself how much better the mods really are. |

january they release something called the creation kit, its tools the devs used to make the game in the first place. so i assume they expect mods...........
anyways backup your files i would wait for the creation kit, as you can't do much yet. thats why there aren't many mods yet short of some textures and back grounds |

As others have mentioned, the mods available right now are still quite limited relative to what will be possible once the "creation kit" is released. After that, almost anything will be possible, given time and inspiration, including complete overhauls of the combat and leveling experience.
Definitely use a mod manager, but I'd also recommend keeping a "clean" copy of your data folders somewhere safe just in case something does go wrong. Also, remember that the more mods you install, the less stable the game is likely to become (unless it's a mod to improve stability). |
