Hey all,
My first post.
At the moment I'm about three weeks old and just doing low level missions. It seems to be going ok, but there's a question that's come up. How can I tell what kind of damage I am taking? It looks like you can be hit by explosives, EM, kinetic or thermal types, but the little box that says "x hit you for y" or something doesn't specify what type. I'd like to see what kind of thing I'm facing and tune my defences for it.
Also, is there a way to see combat messages in a window, like chat? eg. in WoW, you can get all combat related messages to appear in a separate window, so you can reveiew them after a fight.
Thanks for any help or suggestions,
Psadu

dam it all i cant get the link to work.google it.

Thanks Gerod, that's really helpful and I'll go and find that site to look up the specifics.
And to DubanFP: I know it's not WoW and I'm not asking to make it like Wow. I just used an example from it because it's such a well known game that people are likely to know what I'm talking about.

Since Duban was less than helpful for you, On the left side of your screen, there is a button that says log. If you open that, you can edit what kind of information it stores (although there are limited options), and how far back it stores information. Hope that helps! -Myra

Thanks Myra. I'm pretty sure the last time I noticed the log window was on day one or two when there was far too much to be taking in and I guess I never went back to it. This does look like just what I need, though.

The log window has been broken for a while. It will usually clear itself after any session change (docking or jumping), and for some reason on mine it won't log unless the window is visible.
However, all logs are saved to file by the client. Just navigate to .\CCP\EVE\capture\logs\ to view them. There are a few programs out there that will parse the logs for better viewing. I use QuickFit's log analyzer function and recommend it unless someone knows of a better one.

Slight sidetrack:
Why is it that there are so many EVE players that are phobic and/or hostile about any mention of a game other than EVE, particularly WoW? Is it overcompensation for something? I play EVE, WoW, and CoH. Space, Fantasy, Comics, each one has what I like. I tried an experiment after reading this thread: I logged into WoW and mentioned that I really like EVE. Couple people agreed, couple said they didn't care for it.
Not one person said anything negative about me, or EVE.
I tried it in CoH too, and had a few people ask if I'm looking for a corp, but again, no one said anything negative.
Just to be thorough I tried it in my region on EVE. I said that I really like playing EVE & WoW both in one region, and CoH in another. In both regions it started a flamestorm of people insulting both games, as well as saying there was something wrong with me.
I thought EVE folks pride theirselves on their community. If by community, that means "fart sniffing elitists right out of South Park" I'd say it's on the money. This probably doesn't apply to most people reading this, but certain folks (like DubanFP) might want to think about this the next time they rant on about someone referencing a game that is not EVE in a thread. What are you so upset about? What insecurities are driving that aggression?

I wouldn't worry about it - the same thing happens when someone says they want to play Eve their own way with no player-v-player fights etc - all of a sudden you get a bunch of muppets ranting on and saying "oh but Eve is DESIGNED to be a PVP game" - blah blah blah... "The devs said so" blah blah. Play it your own way and ignore the fascists.

I think a lot of it is ego. The Eve community is generally more mature (age wise) and we take pride in that, sometimes too much pride and it gets overzealous. We view Eve as above the other games that rely mostly on repetitive game play and uber items...oh wait that's Eve too :) What it boils down to is that most think that the way they play the game is the way that everyone should play it because it works for them. Most of these players are closed-minded and don't want to hear how someone else is making a living in Eve that is different than their own, because it goes against their way of thinking.

Speaking for myself, I have no problem at all about people playing WOW.
For some reason, what really gets under my skin - and I think I might not be alone - is all the people who come to this game and just presume that it should work the same as WOW. And there are tons of them. They name their characters Drizzt or darkelf or warorc, they want to know how to play "a healer", start a guild, do some quests and craft things. And they just aren't able to think about the game's mechanics except by assuming it should work the same way WOW does.
This game is about spaceships and asteroids and laser beams, its not about swords and gnomes and trolls. There is no reason on earth or elsewhere that its mechanics should be the same - and they aren't - and no reason to try and transport what you did in the one to the other instead of just engaging with this game on its own terms and discovering it fresh.
I don't know exactly why it is so annoying when people do this except that it destroys for everyone the sense of playing THIS game and of using our imaginations to play in the universe CCP is trying to create for us. Which does make this stuff disruptive to the experience of all of us. A massively multiple on line role playing game really is meant to be a massive number of on line people sharing a common fantasy.
Now obviously the OP wasn't doing any of this stupid stuff at all, it was a perfectly reasonable question. But if you can see how easy it is to hit this particular hot button then you will see why it's best just to avoid WOW comparisons entirely, ask your question about Eve as Eve and you'll get your answer and nobody will go nuclear on you.

Edited by: Sakura Nihil on 29/04/2007 14:01:33 Don't take it personally tbh, a lot of us just love this game and it comes out a bit elitist sometimes .
There's a lot of pride here, EVE is a brutal game where only the strong and clever survive - we want to play on hard mode, and because a lot of people that oppose this viewpoint often cite the "well if it was easier EVE would be more popular like WoW". This in most vets opinions would ruin the spirit of the game and thus, we often associate dumbing-down of the game to WoW, and hence the hostility you see here.
I'm sure its an okay game, and it does have its place in the world, just be careful of using references like that in the future unless you want to be flamed .
