No, I'm not bored of EVE, I'm bored because I'm stuck with playing the game on this absolute crapbasket of a laptop while my Alienware's at the repairshop.
Basically, I'm stuck somewhere above the 10mill ISK mark, I don't even want to risk popping my head into Low-sec because this thing grinds to a halt briefly sometimes (said halt just when you need to warp out to avoid a griefer isn't a good thing), and all I did today was a spot of Omber mining, a tiny bit of High-sec ratting in a Destroyer and a lousy theiving spree through Du Annes.
Anyone any ideas on what I can do while I wait for those dunces to fix my comp? I'm sure there's something out there I can do in High-sec, but I just haven't found it. (Suppose I could always see how well I fare missioning with this decrepit machine)

Hey, Pointless, why don't you try hitting the forums from time to time?
Actually, I feel your pain, when I have to use my backup computer it's all sorts of bad. Web, nos or scramble graphics cause my old computer to shut down for some reason.
Mostly when I am suffering I do research on the market: what do I need to train to do something? What are the mineral requirements for a specific cap ship? How expensive is it to build cap ships with bpcs currently on the market? How far do people research their copies, and what is the difference in minerals? Are those mineral req differences reflected in market price? What is the break-even point for buying the BPOs vs BPCs-- how many ships (or even just components) would have to be built to make BPOs worth the money? Are there basic mods available on the market for below mineral cost? What level of profit would make it worthwhile to for you to buy them and reprocess them for the minerals?
Um, yeah, been carebearing it on this account
But those are the kinds of things I do in-game when my computer isn't up to snuff.

Do what I did when my AW went to the shop: buy a Mac, and then sell the AW on E-bay, thus paying for the Mac and some extra upgrades for the baby.
Oh, and post on forums, it always helps to relieve the boredom.
P.S What is wrong with your AW? Mine had a dead LCD, Memory and k-brd, they all kinda cropped up on me.

Graphics card came loose and crashed the whole comp at the slightest touch, at one point corrupting the hard disk.

Yea mate, buy a Mac. Keep the AW OEM XP Install Disk, and just sell it with the respawn DVDs. Install Bootcamp+XP and there, all your pain is solved, other than rebooting to play EVE. And soon we will have the Cider "wrapped" EVE that should run directly on Mac.
Oh, and even if you dont do what the above suggests, I hope everything works out ok.

Edited by: Kalixa Hihro on 29/04/2007 03:52:19 Build your own. You can burn up half the parts screwing stuff up and still come in under what an alienware costs, with better hardware.
You could build a top notch box, throw it into the atlantic ocean, then build a second one for less than a Mac of the same quality costs using the exact same parts. This does exclude the case since you can't buy them unless you buy a mac.
It's your money 8) /*----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/ My opinion in no way represents that of my corp or anyone I am associated with, and is probably entirely wrong. |

I usually build my own and always have a reasonable backup. I also have a business account with my local parts store so everything is trade price. If my main PC goes down, my backup comes into service until I can fix the main one. Usually, my backup is used as a storage machine on the LAN so I can store large amounts of data elsewhere. I am currently building a third machine and waiting on the funds to get a decent size HD and PSU for it, should be done by next week
I have in the past had 3 PC's with their KB, mice and monitors on the desk in front of me, playing 3 accounts on Eve simultaneously, (2 mining and one hauling). The micromanagement was horrendous so I gave up and went back to playing two max.
You should be able to get a decent second machine for around 350 UKP if you buy parts and build it yourself. It's not hard to plug the parts together and almost anyone can do it. It would take about an hour for someone to show you how if you need tuition. Don't buy off-the-shelf stuff, it never does everything you need it to do, there's always one thing lacking, either HD size, memory or graphics power. They also cost far more than what you could put together yourself.

lol yes pretty off-topic, id recomend running around in a destroyer with salvagers and speed mods run around complexes salvaging stuff and you could make quite a bit off money so you can buy that ship you want and have fun with it when u get ur compy back. --------------------------------------------
I have a bad feeling about this...

Yeh pointless, ninja salvaging can get you a nice penny. I wouldnt do it on a main though, people tend to get cranky bout it. One of the best ways to do it is to go find a gate thats normally camped at night. Take..L4X in the 7-K region. Fit out a cormorant with 2 tractors, 5 salvagers and a cloak. Go thru gate and warp off, but warp back at 100K and cloak. Then slowly approach the gate cloaked till you are about 40K away from it. Just wait. Yes it can seem boring but just like gatecamping its sometimes worth it. Wait till some unlucky fool comes thru and gets popped. Then go for it, grab the wreck (I forgot..MWD also) and runnnnnn. Loot and salvage that sucker and stay aligned. Soon as the gatecampers start pegging you..bolt. Now warp back to the wreck, and start to drag it away more. Rinse and repeat. If it hasnt salvaged yet and you need more time..yeh.
But generally 5 salvagers with good skills on one ship will get the job done fast. But as i said..most folks not so happy bout it. That or patrol hisec..might i suggest Jita area? And salvage the PA kills which they never seem to do...

Funny how 2 days after starting this thread, I get a phone call from Alienware telling me they've repaired and sent it back.
Well, I've got a day of two to try these ideas before it arrives.

You could try to explore the market and see if you can place some buy orders on popular items, to sell them higher.
Or play around with Contracts :)

i blew a pc up, trying to fire it up for the first time after building it, so a new PSU and MOBO later and it was still cheaper than a pre-built pc from a store.
and yes i do know what im doing, exploding PSUs happen to the best of us too :D
building a pc thesedays is like playing with lego technic sets tbh.
