Quote: Freighters drop loot so they must be able to fit some modules to prevent high-sec griefings.
Could someone please explain how this is possible? I fly a freighter day in day out, I've trained an gained the isk to buy a 1Bln + ship to fly it around in high sec space. With that many hitpoints, how can it be sui-ganked?

Anything can be suicide ganked. Its just a matter of whether they're willing to field enough ships to do so. And it would take a LOT of ships.
I just can't imagine enough people are willing and coordinated to pull this off very often.

Because CCP is tired of people starting 100 new threads about the same issues, instead of sticking to the first one posted?

Oi, Oi, mr Goony, I read the general post daily. Just want a verification on how stuff is being handled. If it was to easy to gank my freighter to your blob, i'd sell it, and live off the isk, coming to the East and kill vexors.

no it isnt easy
ill give you a story where you need to do the opposite or as far from it as you can
- you fly an empty freighter (preferably a charon instead of an obelisk because its got more cargohold) in a quite old character (1year+) to a heavy system (jita or motsu) now you proceed to get 2-300 billion (the more the better profits right?) worth of items from the busiest station in the system -then without anyone elses help you proceed happily to fly towards a 0.5 system on auto pilot -
say hi in local and tell everyone how are they doing ? say " i am just in my freighter heading towards [0.5 system] with my freighter bpo and full of megacyte" then recollect that no one cares what you are hauling but they might know the big alliances so just say "i hate big alliances I hate BOB and GOONSWARM and RED ALLIANCE but i REALLY hate privateers, im glad i am not in low sec because i got +5 attribute implants and mining implant set and i forgot to buy a new clone"
then you decide you should go take a shower and you go AFK

Speaking from experience.
My freighter was attacked near Jita by 19 ships. The gank was unsuccessful but it still cost me isk to repair it's structure.
The main issue here is risk/reward.
A well organized gank squads risks little for so much potential gain. Even if they make no gain it still costs the freighter pilot isk with the potential to lose multiple billions for no real cost to the gankers.
I am a hard-core PVP pilot and could easily bring our corp into empire and kill multiple freighters per hour if we so chose to. There is NO risk to the attackers and no real defense. (Forget scouting, you could just put cloakers on the domis since you don't really use the high slots or use a whole lot of other basic PVP tactics)
The answer is to balance the risk and the reward. My two suggestions are simple and they have already been mentioned many times:
1 Give the freighter at least one low slot to fit a Damage mod or a hull repairer 2 Raise the cost of ganking by refusing to pay insurance (this is just a good business decision)
I know our corp would not go into empire to gank defenseless freighters but if we wanted to get some quick isk this would be an easy route.
The main issue here is RISK/REWARD

For months, the risk of having a freighter in empire was virtually 0. Now you complain that a very small percentage of corps can attempt to get you, with a 100% guaranteed 20 million isk loss, plus whatever mods were fitted? If you look at the 0utbreak killmail, most of the ships were using tech 2 drones, so that adds to the cost, they were all using plenty of plates and shield extenders, and at least the person shooting the vid had 6 slots of antimatter ammo loaded into large weapons. So, the loss is more around 30 million isk guaranteed lost per attempt. Never get popped again! |

Edited by: Kiviar on 01/05/2007 05:02:29 Yes, killing a freighter in high sec isnt something that your run of the mill pirates will do on a whim. It takes a lot of planning and lot of information to pull together a sucessful freighter kill.
Furthermore giving the freighter slots and fitting won't really help any. A determined gank squad is going to burn through its hp before concord kills them even if it has a tank or not. They would have to give it the capability to fit capitol modules before it even had the chance of resisting ten or twenty battleships of fire.

Edited by: Nerogk Shorn on 01/05/2007 05:09:40 I am pretty sure I saw and Outbreak hi sec freighter kill on their killboards. They used like 25 dominix's and a couple phoons to do it, and I think they all died. But MAN you should have seen the stuff destroyed in the freighter killmail. It was impressive for sure. I dunno if i'd be able to find the link.
Edit: Apparently this isn't news to anyone in this post. Oh well. So much for trying to feel knowledgeable.
