Saw this on CNN.com.
EW rates the top 25 Sci-fi shows and movies of the last 25 years.
What do y'all think? Are your favorites on it? Anything overlooked?

Uh, yeah, where the f*ck is Stargate? I didn't expect it to make top 3, but top 25 for crying out loud!

Edited by: El Berto on 05/05/2007 09:58:30 First, The series; Babylon 5? Where is it? It changed the episodic nature of TV sci-fi, allowing richer character and story development (also some bloody awful speeches - and a few inspiring ones). Quantum leap lower that Star Wars: The Clone Wars? Very funny.
Total Recal out ranking ESotSM? Oh dear. No Dark City? No Event Horizon? However, V:miniseries (which was good... but not that good) and Galaxy Quest get in there.
Oh well, its Entertainment Weekly, what do you expect... At least Brazil gets recognised.

How about this instead. Remove those ones (some are just too crappy, some are only "fringe science fiction" in my opinion):
V - The Miniseries, Quantum Leap, Heroes, Back to the Future, X Files, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost, Children of Men, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Galaxy Quest.
Add some more important ones and order properly like this (Stargate is last because I don't like it, but it has run for ages as far as I know):
25(--) Stargate 24(--) Gattaca 23(21) Futurama 22(13) Terminator 21(--) Mars Attacks 20(--) Minority Report 19(07) E.T. 18(09) Aliens 17(16) Total Recall 16(10) The Thing 15(15) Firefly 14(--) Babylon 5 13(--) 5th Element 12(19) Starship Troopers 11(--) Ghost in the Shell 10(06) Brazil 09(08) Star Trek: Next Generation 08(--) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi 07(--) Tron 06(23) Doctor Who 05(02) Battlestar Galactica 04(--) 12 Monkeys 03(01) The Matrix 02(05) Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan 01(03) Blade Runner

indeed, the tv series with one of the best story arcs ever seen on tv combined with pioneer work on cgi tv effects isn't mentioned but something like the star wars trick series made it in? that "top 25" chart is instant fail
and where the frell is farscape?

If you guys actually READ THE PAGE, you'll see its top 25 OF THE LAST 25 YEARS. Unless Empire Strikes Back was filmed after '82, then its not gonna be in the list.
(Which it wasn't. Return Of The Jedi can just slide in, but we all know that that was the runt of the original litter).
EDIT: I actually agreed with most of it. Galaxy Quest shouldn't have been in there, though, and Babylon 5 and Stargate probably deserve some recognition. I would have put A Scanner Darkly in too, but thats probably just me.
Nice to see some oft forgotten films like Children Of Men and Brazil in there though. --------

There's stuff like ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND in there, but no Fifth Element?
that list is a fanboi, artsy fartsy, silly piece of ****.
Allthough i agree that matrix is cool scifi(one of my favorites of all time), it's not number 1 of last 25 years...

I like your list better.
Although im not enough of a sci-fi fan to make a good list.
My favourites from the list are Firefly, Terminator, Starship Troopers, Minority Report and Futurama.
I love Firefly/serenity, It feels so human and I love the characters.
Starship Troopers is amazing. Its so cheesy but that makes it all the better. It has good action and humour with some terrible acting, but it doesnt really try to hide that haha

Firstly, it IS science fiction. It doesn't have to be good to be science fiction- and it does have a SF plot.
Secondly, its very popular. I know that doesn't really mean anything, but presumably if lots of people like it, then odds are some of those people will happen to be review-writers and get to make lists.
Thirdly- I like it --------

I just hate it lol, i could list the reasons. Boring, weird, FLASHBACKS! OH GOD THE FLASHBACKS, it just seems to me like the writers just stick in whatever they think of at the time rather than choosing to make ANY sense at all...

what cos i don't like b-grade crap? unless your a complete sci fi geek, who will watch anything, shows/movies like babylon 5, lost, battlestar galactica, V, total recall, starship troopers, galaxy quest, star wars, stargate are plotless, badly acted, mind numbing crap.

no, cause you made a sweeping statement that anyone who watches that show "has got problems" when neither this nor your claim of it being "b-grade crap" is supported in any way by how much awards the show won and how much credit it got since the past 13 years

awards or how much a film makes doesn't mean much mostly. you can't tell me hayden christianson is anything but **** as vader. that arnie doesn't stink as much as the plot of totall recall. as to babylon 5 and its kin, i'm sorry but i can see nothing challenging in any of them. show me 1 of those i've mentioned that has the depth of story, credible acting of bladerunner, tarkovsky's solaris, or night watch? there basic, fantasy based but dressed up in sci fi clothing, b-grade dramas. it seems to me the sci-fi community will pretty well lap up anything.
as to the poster before you, i haven't watched anything sci-fi since a few star treks back and the film night watch. what's mostly on i as i said think is WoW fantasy dressed up as sci-fi.

well...we where talking about a top 25, so standards have to come into it somewhere i would have thought. and just because mine is at odds with your average sci-fi lovers, doesn't make it invalid with regard to critique.
as to the themes listed, in our heavily intellectualized, deconstructed age, i'm sure a similar list could be made for neighbours :) doesn't mean that any of the issues are tackled in any depth.
as my opinion is so at odds i'll shut up now

exactly but you can't even point out why you think it is "just" standard other than wildly throwing out claims without backing it up which you would need to do if you want your "critique" to be perceived to have any value mr. "your standard sci-fi lover" :)

Lost shouldnt be on there, Star Trek TNG should be higher. Return of the Jedi should at least get a mention, Terminator should be higher also. BSG should be lower.
just my personal opinions.
