I would hope never.
My reasonoing:
i) time is better spent on improving the game as oposed to expanding the game with useless stuff, I say useless as you would not be able to do anything while out of the ship.
ii) Fluffwise, having lived for years in a pod with concussing reducing fluid, suspended and wired into the ship I very much doubt we would even be able to walk outside of out ships. Tho I would love to have a dalek shell to move round in :)
iii) moving about in stations will be a short thrill but soon it will get dull, after all the game is about flying spaceships, not macroing emotes to look cool in rendered bodies :)
If you are as boored as you say you need to do one of two things:
#1, take a break, go play another game where you do walk round, WoW, Vanguard, whatever, I can almost guarantee you will be back in a few weeks ready to leave that station and get back into a fun game.
#2, reinvent yourself. Do somthing new, if you have been a PvP player get into the market, production or cosmos, if you have not been a PvP player get into that, if nothing else fails decide to go ninjamining in BoB territory (or other major hostile alliance) if not with your main then go with an alt, low risk high exitement is fun and may rekindle your love for the game.
Walking in stations will not, that will give you about 2hrs of enjoyment and then become as booring as sitting in the station.

All speculation aside; lets be aware of a few facts that have occurred over the last few months.
Fact 1. White wolf merged with CCP on November 11th, 2006
Fact 2. The combined company will continue to operate under their respective names. White Wolf will be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of CCP. Hilmar Petursson, Chief Executive Officer of CCP, will be CEO of the combined company. Mike Tinney, President of White Wolf, will continue as President of the independent subsidiary.
Fact 3. "The creators of the persistent online role-playing world EVE Online, and the world's second-largest developer of offline role-playing, strategy and collectable card games will create the industry's largest independent Virtual World developer."
White wolf also seems to have experience with 3d virtual world environments. (Namely the license to use their engine.)
Check my resources at http://www.gameshark.com/news/19570/CCP-White-Wolf-Merger.htm
I think CCP is not spending money Hiring Developers, rather they are using the license to modify and distribute the new engine via their software for a fee.

It's the opportunity cost that we're talking about.
There is also the cost of not doing it. Online MMO players are demanding that their presence in the virtual world is more than just an icon. They want fully customisable 3d avatars and believable 3d worlds to interact with.
At the moment if you want to fly a spaceship you have Eve or SW:G. Lets be blunt, the latter is crap. So just now Eve has pretty much the market to itself. But, it won't always be so and regardless of what the pew pew boys say, without the subscription money of the carebears Eve will not flourish.
IMO, CCP have got this one about right, by reusing the work that was going to be done anyway for another project they can minimize the cost while meeting a very real demand.
A dev blog from the people working on this would be great as would a demo of their work.

I'm reserving judgement on this one, but I can't shake off the feeling that this just isn't right. Why add a feature that has no purpose to the game? Everything else in Eve is integrated with the bigger picture in some way, so what exactly does this add if it is indeed 'completely optional' like everyone is parroting saying?
So, 'completely optional' = 'no advantage gained for doing it'? Right? Or is it completely optional like going to 0.0 space is? The kind of optional where you don't have to do something, but if you do you can reap the considerable rewards. If that's the case, many of you are very very wrong about it not affecting everyone's gameplay.
I doubt that's the case however, so assuming the former, if walking in stations has no advantages to those who do it and no drawbacks to those who don't, just what the hell is it for? It doesnt seem like it's a part of any kind of gameplay, so what exactly is it doing in a game? Just a way of attracting WoW players in order to make more money?
I can hardly wait.

For the people who might say "this is a spaceship game and shouldnt have people walking around" - let me say this... Star Wars Galaxies was the most awesome game before it got nuked by SOE, and the reason it was so awesome in my opinion, back then, was that you had space combat AND full run around, shooting, close combat, riding animals, piloting shuttles, city building stuff all over the 'universe'. And the PVP could take place in space or on land (practically anywhere). Oh, and you also had the chance to pimp out your own home, I hope we can rent our own quarters on stations if we dont want to sleep in our ships...

are you sure you're actually a) a guy b) alive
cause a 3D room with exotic dancers and beer sounds awfully good to me.
you realise of course, that most men find virtual beer and animated models of women who aren't in any way real, just don't cut it.
jim's right, there does need to be more to it than pretty looking graphics and art which we can walk about, there has to be substance and content there.
they say some time in 2008, i'm gonna say that winter '08 seems to be a good estimate (given that revalations 2 and 3 need to come out first). but i'm in no rush, as awesome as it probably will be, i'm happy to wait (provided rev 2 and 3 keep me busy) untill it's ready. ========================================== Iy |

Edited by: heheheh on 21/05/2007 12:46:36 Id suggest going back to wow. I personally hope this feature takes forever, most players wont even want to do it. There is so much more to the game than mining or trading, i too would get bored doing that crap, come to think of it your not helping to alleviate the boredom by just sitting in a station all day now are you ?

Originally by: Grimster I've got to say I don't care much for it, I'm playing a spaceship game and hope that the walking about bit is an "optional extra" and doesn't lock out game content/take dev focus away from the main game etc.
If I wanted that to walk about I'd go play CS
Well if you don't choose to land and walk in stations then I guess you will miss out on those Minmatar freedom rallyÆs.
Now why is that so bad? This is an immersive universe, what content are you worried about not getting too?
Either you want to have fun recruiting players into your corp in an actual office or stay out side, makes no difference to anyone else.
But count me in to anything more this game can offer, it is only a plus.

Walking in stations and planetary flight are the two biggest carrots on a stick I have EVER seen in an MMO. I left the game two years ago and they were talking about how we would be walking in stations and landing on planets in KALI (revelations). I wouldn't bet on either ever happening.
If I recall correctly, they even debuted some planetary landing concept video at a con somewhere (I remember seeing it on the net at some point).
And if thats not enough proof that it isn't going to happen, someone please point me to the results of the gallente election, I seem to have missed them.

Once I heard that they were doing it with the backing of white wolf I knew it was for real this time, thank you white wolf.
And besides that's what it takes in life, nothing wrong with that. Same simular things happen in all our lives.
So yeah it's gonna happen and I'm sure people were just wishing for it and did not realy expect it could be done but now it can so be glad of it.

Just think of the potential with corps/alliances at war;
(hypothetical example) Cybok and Sirmole enter bar.
/rude - Cybok makes a rude gesture at Sirmole /glare - Sirmole stares at Cybok in an intimidating manner
(enter exotic dancers)
/spank (ahem)

Edited by: Kalazar on 21/05/2007 13:27:15 Bored with Eve? As others have said, try something new, you say you mostly do mining and trading. Here are a few steps to a more interesting eve experience:
Step 1> Buy ship (whatever you feel you can afford to lose, might be an idea to start off in frigates)
Step 2> Fly ship to your nearest low security system. Set an autopilot route that takes you through lots of low security systems.
Step 3> Follow your autopilot route, stopping and searching for other players on the way.
Step 4> Upon finding other players, engage them. If you win, go to step 5, if you lose, skip to step 6.
Step 5> Repeat step 4 until you lose.
Step 6> Buy another ship, repeat.
Also, walking in stations is gonna rawk in my opinion, even if you can't go pew at people. ----------------------------------------------

Perhaps a good way to demonstrate whether or not the out of pod experience is truly in demand by players would be to create a 3rd party client (using readily available software.)
Some requirements the software would need to meet at the least.
1) Know what the character name is 2) Know where in space the character is located 3) Allow basic 3D interaction between players in a somewhat suitable environment.
The first two conditions can easily be met with code already used in EveMon. The last condition can be met with some readily available 3D chat clients.
Yes, this would take some time and effort by a grass roots group of coders. This might be considered a violation of the EULA or Eve Terms of Client Use policy. The 3rd party client would not be able to interact with in game functions other than to read where a player is docked and what their character name is.
Remeber this is just from an experimental standpoint. Having to run two programs interrupts the continuity of the eve experience in undesirable ways. Im sure that if it was valuable to existing players and if new players were drawn into eve through the client; then CCP might consider this option not only as a new level for players to interact on but also as a good marketing tool.
Im sure that if it became popular that the coders for this second client would gain some recognition as well.
