[I was told exploration questions go in this forum.]
Assume you are out for just data and relic sites in null-sec in a covops frigate. You have one spare mid-slot left. All scanning skills and covops skill are at V and you are using sisters launcher / probe. You are not using a cargo scanner.
Which makes more improvement to the overall speed of locking into a given signature - a single Scan Rangefinding Array II (10% bonus to scan strength) or a single Scan Pinpointing Array II (20% reduction to scan deviation.)

With all skills at V, I don't expect too much difference for normal sites. However I'm going with scan strength on my prober, because it's faster to get a first result in order to sort out non-profession sites early.
I'm my own NPC alt.

Personally, with skills that high (and assuming you have prospector implants), I'd probably go for Acquisition II module. |

With all skills to 5 the acquisition array (reduces scan cycle time) made very little difference in my results, out of the 3 this is the one I would park in a hanger and look at the others.
Pinpointing array reduces the deviation in the location of signals which can make locking stuff faster and easier because you may be able to reduce your scan range faster. And being able to reduce your scan range more quickly beats out cycle time in virtually all situations.
Rangefinding array increases signal strength which minimizes the deviation in the location of the contact, though not as much as the pinpointing array. The added strength allows you to lock signals at greater probe range settings which minimizes the time needed further reducing the need for the Acquisition array.
If I only had the slot for one of these my choice based on my experiences would be the Ragefinding array since scanning is all about signal strength. But then as they say your mileage may vary so I suggest you try them all and see which one gives you the best results. |

Can you consistently do a double shrink (8 to 2, 2 to 0.5 AU ect) when scanning.
With my scanning Helios I have not been able to consistently do a triple shrink even with 2 X 2T Deviation mods so once you can double shrink I find its best to stack strength. If you can with the deviation mod but not without then the deviation would be better as double shrinking almost double your scan speed. |

I find I can double shrink with scan strength above 95 but not consistently triple shrink with an all V's char with implants. And a missed triple scan greatly increases scanning time. That's why I like acquisition speed. I also find a large monitor helps zoom in accurately.
Where I find high scan strength above 125 pays off is combat scanning small ships in one pass after isolating them with d-scan. Acquisition speed then allows me to throw the probes out of targets d-scan range as quickly as possible.
It's been a while but I was disappointed with the gain I got with scan strength over 160 so i don't bother training Rangefinding and Pinpointing to V or using Virtue implants anymore for a scanning alt anymore.

My main goal is to be able to filter as many Sigs as possible with an 8AU scan , With High enough Strength you can pretty much ignore half the Sigs in one scan. Saves way more time that a 1 second speed increase or a bit of deviations. |

Disagree with Shiloh on most of his last post. You can never have to much scan strength and more is ALWAYS better. And the 3 level 5 skills are absolutely critical to getting the most from your scanning ability if for no other reason than they allow you to switch to sisters combats as your primary scan probes. Let me explain.
My primary scan character has all level 5 skills and a full set of plus 6 implants. Uses a cov ops frigate, range finding array, sisters expanded launcher, with sisters combat probes as my primary set up. With this combination I can double skip on every signature I have scanned in the past year or so. Never had a signature I cannot lock. Yes I do occasionally require 1 more scan cycle than if I was using core probes. The benefits to using combats though far out weight that minimal time lost for how and where I scan, mostly in low sec. Never have to de-cloak in a potentially dangerous(for me) situation to launch combat probes. Can switch in seconds to ships when needed (an almost daily occurance) And best of all when the newbs start crying about leaving their gecko's behind in a site I can quickly find them so they stop bothering me on comms.
Perhaps the best reason for all level 5 skills and the use of combat probes as primary is covering those really large systems that seem to populate Caldari space. The 64au range means I can usually do an initial scan and cover the entire system, it I was using core probes I would have to break it into sections and then scan each section individually.
If you live in a worm hole as Shiloh seems to the range may not be an issue but I always found the ability to switch virtually instantly from sigs to ships to be more than enough reason to use the combats.
In the end scanning is a personal preference thing and you will have to experiment and see what works best for you and for your needs. |

Sounds like you've found a good reason to spend the 6 week training time to maximize pinpoint and rangefinding. The other reason I've heard is to scan with non-bonused combat ships.
Why are you scanning the entire system at once? Is it to find recons that are hiding while you run exploration sites in LS?
I've never used a system wide combat scan in a WH because I don't want people to know I'm there.

Let me start with your last. The relatively small size of most worm hole systems combined with the extended range that d-scan has now means that most people who are wise to the ways of things worm hole know you are there shortly after you launch probes so this aspect is not a real issue or concern it is something that we all have to learn to deal with. Even so the extended range of the combat probes works to your advantage simply because the greater range allows more flexibility in positioning them outside of d-scan range. The other way the range and ship scan capabilities of the combat probes helps is you can set them to max range, move them to the outer edges of the system (or anywhere else you want them) where you feel they are least likely to be spotted and then do a single cycle scan to see if there is anyone in the system with you. If you live in a worm hole this is extremely useful if you have just logged in, there are no corp mates online and you need to know if you are alone or not.
Going back to the beginning why not scan the entire system first? Why start with only scanning half the system when you are simply looking for signatures to further investigate. Yes I know the whole deal with spawning within specific distance limits etc, but even so on some of the really large systems this still takes at least 2 first scans to find them all.
Even if you prefer core a single combat probe can be extremely useful no matter what size system you are scanning. Center it on the sun and extend range to max and leave it there. By turning it off in the control panel you can move and adjust the scan range on your cluster of core probes to zero in on a specific signature without changing the location or scan range of the combat. Once cores are moved simply turn the combat on before you hit the scan button. Especailly in the large systems this can save you considerable time when you finish locking the signature you are working on because you do not have to reset to start the scan sequence again you simply move probes into position based on the return from the combat. |
