I made this reply in another post and I thought I'd share it with everyone else.
The BEST salvage ship (imho), is the Stabber. It has many of the most important features required for a salvage ship, as follows:
Cargo bay: 420m3 is usually more than enough room. If not, you can throw expanders in any of it's 3 lower slots.
Speed: It only has a base velocity of 235, but the Stabber has a special ability bonus of 5% max velocity per level trained. It can also handle having "both" an AB (deadspace) and a MWD (open space) outfitted at the same time.
Capacitor: I've yet to run out of capacitor during salvage runs. I usually leave AB on constantly, and with all uppers firing tackle and tractors, I've never had a problem. Using a MWD may need to be monitored.
Mod Slots: 6 upper slots which can be used for tackle and tractor beams. 3 medium slots for AB, MWD, rechargers, shields, whatever. 3 lower for intertials, expanders, overdrives, etc..
Defense: While not a meaty tank, it can take more of a beating than destroyers and frigates.
Cost efficient: If you lose a stabber, you won't cry about it.
I've tried every reasonable ship (nothing T2 or BC or higher) from all races and the Stabber fits the bill perfectly.

I use a Catalyst myself.
4 tractor, 4 salvager
1mn after burner, cap recharger II
3 cargo expander II
3 cargo optimization rigs
yes it's insanely expensive :D But it does the job

I also use a catalyst. 4 TBs, 4 Salvagers.
Since salvagers run on 10 second cycles and have a low success rate, IMO, it's better to have lots of high slots for running as many salvagers and TBs as possible. So I'm going to disagree about the Stabber being best.
I tried fitting a Typhoon for salvaging (8 high slots, 7 lows for cargo expanders and speed/inertia fittings.) But it's really clumsy, very slow to accelerate, and the cat had a higher speed.

Eris
2 tractor beams, 6 salvagers AB, cap recharger Nanos, I-stabs or expanders (4 low slots)
Faster than both the stabber and catalyst, got more cargo space, 8 high slots, and is fairly cheap.
Cons: It needs a lot of skills, and people cry when they see a T2 ship with salvagers

Stabber is not so good imho. I used to use it, but now I use either the Thrasher - 8 hi-slots, 400m3 cargo and its fast/agile. This is the best ship if you are salvaging after a battle, gets the job done quickly.
If there's a lot of stuff to salvage, I use an Exequeror. Only five hi-slots but with salvaging skills trained to level 4/5 thats not a big problem. Gives cruiser level performance and a huge cargo bay.

I'm a fan of the Exeqror, personnaly ...
With Gal Cruiser 4 and 3 T2 Cargo Expanders, I get a cargohold of 1741m¦ on mine ... more than enough to loot and salvage even the biggest level 4 mission.
2 Salvagers, 2 Tractors, an AB + cap stuff in the mids ... fast enough to fly between the wrecks, but not too fast (to avoid outrunning the tractors).
Of course, with 3 Salvage Tackle rigs, those things really help (70% chance of salvaging per cycle with the skill at 4, I usually empty a wreck on the first try).

i have used this same exact setup as my lvl 4 and 3 mission salvager for about a month and it works pretty good, i have even filled it to the top a couple times and was only halfway through the lvl4 mission

Well, for amarr pilots I can suggest Harbinger. This puppy has 8 highs and lots of lows for expanders (got 1300 m3 out of it) or if you're cautious then reppers and resists. MWD is slapped on and even the biggest missions get mopped up quickly.
Only turndown would be the price but you will get it back with few missions :)

Catalyst:
4x tractor 4x salvager
1mn AB named cap recharger
3x named expander (I used whatever was in my hangar)
1x salvage tackle I (haven't bothered to fit more)
I use this on my alt. I gang it with my main, to give myself speed and armor bonuses. Expanders slow it down, which is somewhat good. I don't outrun the tractors, and I loot while my main is en route to the next gate (BS, no speed mod) or heading back to turn in the mission. If I get full, jet can it all, drag the can behind me, fill everything into the can, go back for my itty V to pick up the can. If I'm in an area where people are probing my mission spots out, I dock and unload instead. You bastards can't have my salvage components. - - -

Thrasher is what I use,
2 Tractors and 4 salvagers, MWD, Cap battery, cap recharger, cap power relay and an istab. never runs out of cap and can easily clean any battlefield within 10 to 15 minutes.

4x Salvagers 1x Tractor
1x AB 2x Cap Recharger
1x MAR 2x Rat-specific hardeners 1x DC
3x Salvage Tackle rigs
5x medium, 5x light drones (rat specific)
I use this for salvaging level 2 missions. With Drones 5, Drone Interfacing 5, Combat Drone Operation 5, and Gallente Cruiser 4 my drones do hax damage, I just loot and salvage until the field is clear. I can do level 3 missions if I use the 2 heavy, 2 medium, 1 light drone combination.

The best one for level 4 missions would be Typhoon. 4 Tractors and 4 salvagers. Fill the lows with expanders, mid slot MWD and cap rechargers. You can loot and salvage pretty much all the level 4 missions in one trip.

a great dedicated 0.0 salvager since not a lot of cargo room is needed for the rig bits you salvage is a interceptor - fast to ge to the wrecks - plenty of room for the rig bits and also you can get the hell out of Dodge very fast if need be.

Destroyers are probably the best salvage ships if you're salvaging with an alt. However, if you only have one account like me, they don't really have the tank to salvage chained spawns (i.e. you show up at the belt to get the wrecks and there are 2 or 3 cruisers/destroyers there). I can see a Stabber doing that job nicely depending on fit. I keep wondering if this might be a valid use for an assault frigate as well.

I second the Phoon. I'm fairly happy with my Mega salvager, but I do intend to train up Minnie BS just so I can have that little bit of extra speed. The Phoon is clearly the best BS salvage ship there is, excluding the Machariel. ^^
I don't think I'd want to touch a salvage ship that has fewer than 8 highs.

Tbh using anything with less than 8 highs for salvaging is shooting yourself in the foot. The plain best salvagers are probaly the Typhoon and Armageddon. 8 highs, lotta lows, and the Typhoon is also fast. And they only cost 60 mil, not 100 like Mega and Apoc.
Of course if you are on a budget, destroyers offer the best price/performance ratio. -

For secure space liek many i use a Thrasher. 2 tractor, 6 salvager, 1mn ab, 2 cap recharge and 2 corgo expanders.
For 0.0 chain belt spwns i would use a cyclone.
Highs would be same as trasher. Meds: 1 10mn mwd and sheild tank. Lows: 2 expanders and then speed mods
It could always tank the spwn long enought to get all the wrcks and or for backup to arive if i needed it wich only happened once. If you were warp scrambled i would just pop out the drone and let them lose.

Best salvage ship hands down? That would be the yacht.
Cruiser with 1750 cargo with no expanders. 5 Highslots, 3 meds, 6 lows.
That, and it's damn sexy.

Not to change the subejct too much, but does anyone else simply use MWD to get to a wreck quickly, rather than using tractor beams? Seems to work well for me. I don't do a ton of salvaging though.

Hurricane is the best as far as I'm concerned.
4x Salvager 4x Tractor
1x MWD 1x AB 2x Cap Battery/Recharger
5x Expanded Cargo II 1x Nano
Over 1100 m/s with MWD (can run it nonstop) and 1600 m3 of cargo room. The AB is nice for when you forgot to bring back your mission objective, and have to salvage in deadspace.
Destroyers are nice, but lack cap & cargo. Battleships are too expensive, sluggish, and oddly enough, run into cap problems with a MWD. Most everything else has less than 8 highs, which is unacceptable. The Hurricane is where its at.

I tend to leave clumps of wrecks in missions, mostly within tractor range. If you have a few very spread out wrecks, and you have to fly to each one anyway, I suppose the tractor wouldn't be required.
But if you have a lot of wrecks and you fly to each wreck individually you're wasting salvage cycles by sticking all your salvagers on a single wreck.

as alot of people have said the destroyers make great salvage ships, but stabber is real nice too, salvaging isnt realy an area where you need to have the best of the best ship/setup so dont get too hung up about it, its only collecting crap afterall

One of the best T1 salvage ships is gallente destroyer. It gets approx 850 m3 with 3 t2 expanders and has most reasonable agility/top speed. Granted 850 m3 is not enough in all missions but usually you can loot at least battleships that way.
For 'the best' salvage ship I would look towards interdictors. You need 8 hi slots, good cargo bay and good agility/top speed. Those are present in interdictors.
If you salvage in cruiser then execuror is better than stabber tho. Unless you salvage lev 1 and 2 missions ofc where small cragobay of stabber does not hinder you as mutch.

Yah, same here. I happened to have one lying around so made use of it. I find it's better with 5 tractors and 3 salvagers though. I hardly ever have to wait for a salvager with my skills.
Only annoyance is that with full expanders it's a tad slow. Got a LiF booster on it but the cap don't last long even with two CRIIs. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Since I didn't relocate my salvagegeddon to my new mission spot, I had to look for a new salvager to replace the catalyst I was using. I find the Hurricane mentioned above to work even better than the geddon due to the less cap-hungry 10mn MWD. It also looks more sexy :) -

For convenience, drone ships are great (eg Myrmidon, Dominix) since the high slots aren't needed for their main damage output. Stick em with tractors and salvagers and you don't need to switch ships after a mission/ratting __________ If you think the game is rigged, why are you still playing? |
