Something confuses me about the Orca. It's clearly a terrific mining platform, and since the rebalance is a hellbeast of a ship for a sort of mobile base.
All of these things are great and really work in the game from what I've seen; the changes to the mining foreman role to actually include active participation in the mining fleet was a terrific change and long overdue.
The thing that confuses me with the orca is that it seems to be a weird cap/subcap hybrid thing. Points:
It requires Capital Ship Parts to build it in the BPO It gets a huge jump fatigue reduction in line with BOPS and JF's Even packed it won't fit in a jump freighter - it only packs down to some 500k m3
All of these point toward a capital ship but:
It doesn't require capital ship skills to fly It doesn't have an in-built jump drive
Is there any particular reason why it's stuck somewhere in the middle? All of the sub-caps that I'm aware of can pack down and be transported in a freighter except the Orca, whereas moving the Orca around is a logistical nightmare as it sits smack in the middle. It's not a cap ship so no jump drive, and you can't pack it down to fit in a jump freighter. Ironically enough, you can pack down a station the size of a city (medium and large citadels) to easily go inside a Jump Freighter, but ships won't pack down that small. I guess the point I'm making is in light of the fact that a fortizar takes up a mere 80k m3, is it time to look at a pass on all ships volumes when packed?
I mean a single battleship takes up 50k m3 packed and transport ships are 20k m3 packed. Why is the orca SO much bigger than all the other subcap ships? Hell why is a fortizar so small when packed? |

All hauling ships, regardless of size, get a Fatigue reduction. So I think you're confusing how certain attributes relate to ships.
And I reckon you could fit one in a cargo-expanded freighter quite easily. |

Likely for specific reason not too dissimilar to the reasons some capitals are permitted in High Sec and some are not. Each oddity serves to strike a balance between making it capital-like in nature but without making it unnecessarily difficult for miners to use or hop into where it's viability shouldn't ask so much of the players intending to fly it. Technically, the Rorqual is intended to be the pure capital ship in regards to mining command and support platforms, but up until the Porpoise became a recent addition, the Orca was the only legitimate way to do offer the same role in High Sec. That's what impression I get anyways.

Orca used to be in the section of capital industrial ships until rebalance a couple of years ago. It was then moved to the group of the industr+Ħal command ships in the industrial ship section.
Definite sign that the Orca never really was a capital ship is the rig size. The Orca has always only had large rigs.

CCP removed packaged volume some while ago, and I'd be unsurprised if they forgot to adjust values.
Orca's having a packaged volume 2400% of a DST, but less than 40% of a super is pretty weird, I'll agree. |
