It's very much an old farts' elitist game, and I don't mean that in a bad way. There are pros and cons to this. It's nice for us old folks to have our own sandbox, where we can throw our toys out of the pram every now and then when things get tough. The trolls we have in eve are usually not of the "10-year kid messing for lulz" -variety, but of the 35+ year old grown ups legally acting like jackasses in a virtual world, since they wouldn't be able to get away with it in real life.
I concur for the most part. I was thinking about this just last night, that Eve is very much an Elitist game. It is also a "nerds" game. Now I don't mean todays nerds, but the Nerds of the 70's and 80's. We didn't grow up with computers and MMORPG's, we invented them. In Eve, many see a game that has not fallen victim, at least yet, to the instant gratification, it's all about me, everyone thinks the way I do, cater to me or Eve will die, crowd. And we would like to keep it that way. It's a throwback to the days where games weren't released until they were actually complete, and were generally meant to provide unlimited re-playability, as well as a depth and scope not seen in todays offerings. You actually had to work and learn things to be successful. Back in those days, the pre-purchase measure of the quality of a game was the weight of the box it came in. If the manual wasn't over 150 pages, it was a kids game with limited appeal and life expectancy. I don't think the problem goes as high as the 35+ group. Maybe 25 to 30. It's the "everybody get's a trophy" generation. We really failed our kids with that scheme. That isn't to suggest that they are all like that. There are a bunch of kids in their late teens in my alliance and they've been a lot of fun to hang and play with. They are smart, respectful and have made the effort to learn and understand the design concepts and philosophy of Eve, as envisioned and developed by CCP over the last 14 years.
As I've said before, more than anything else, this game is about attitude and effort. Some people just get it, and then some people just don't. For all the folks claiming that Eve will die if CCP doesn't change the game to cater to the "new generation" of gamers, I offer that I have been playing this game for just less than three months. Started as an Alpha and Omega'd up a month later. The fact that CCP hasn't gone all WoW, Angry Birds with Eve is the reason that I decided to stay.
So the things that CCP have done to attract new players has worked. I'm proof. And I'm not the only one. We came and we stayed. CCP isn't trying to bring in all gamers, they're trying to bring in the right gamers.
Respectfully Submitted.
